Pool cleaning kit vs pool vacuum: leaves or the floor

Updated: 21.10.2026

You are choosing between a leaf net and a hose, and both pages call the box a cleaning kit. One lifts what is floating. The other needs water moving through a head to pick up what has settled. The six hand kits in our [pool cleaning kit comparison](/hub/pool-care/pool-cleaning-kit) are nets, brushes and, on five of them, a short pole, from £9.99 to £17.98 on amazon.co.uk. Hose vacuums were removed from that table because Amazon ranks them as handheld pool vacuums. We do not rank vacuum models here. This was written from those listings and public UK shop pages on 19 October 2026, not from a lab. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Two tools, one shopping word

A pool cleaning kit here is a skimmer net and a brush on a pole you push by hand. A pool vacuum needs flow: a garden hose that pushes debris into a bag, or the pool’s pump pulling debris to the filter. Discount Leisure sells an Intex kit at about £17.99 with a skimmer, a hose vacuum head and a pole stated at 2.39 m. On the six amazon rows, none states a hose, a bag or a pump connection. LATERN’s power field is the digit 1, which is not a vacuum.

When the cleaning kit is the right buy

Buy the hand kit when the problem is on the surface or the waterline. LATERN, Celebration Directre, OUWEWIN and both Cadoal sets state a pole. KAHEIGN at about £9.99 does not, and many UK reviews say none arrived. Lengths run from a conflicting 120 cm or 150 cm on LATERN to 138 cm on the Cadoal poles, often short of the middle of a wide pool. Pressing harder does not turn the brush into a vacuum. Bestway still tells Lay-Z-Spa owners not to use a hard brush. The sequence is on the how to use a pool skimmer net page. If the title does not name a pole, use the pool cleaning kit buying guide.

When you need a pool vacuum

You need a vacuum when the dirt has sunk. A mesh bag on a 120–138 cm pole does not lift sand the way a head with flow does. This page does not pick a model. A hose vacuum uses outdoor tap pressure and traps debris in its own bag. No tap pressure, no vacuum. A pump vacuum uses the pool’s circulation: Allswim describes a head, a hose, a pole and a skimmer adaptor, and says to shock first if algae is present. Those steps belong on the pool vacuum comparison. Neither tool replaces sanitiser.

Kits that include a vacuum head

Some shop boxes contain both, and they are still not these six rows. Discount Leisure’s Intex example states a 2.39 m pole with a hose vacuum head, longer than the 120–150 cm figures on the amazon kits, and that pole is not stated to fit Cadoal or LATERN. A vacuum head still needs the hose before it works. Skim first so leaves do not fill the bag. If your hand comes up sandy, the net has finished. If the leaf is floating, you do not need the tap. LATERN at about £11.99 is the top pick here for leaves and a pad. Cadoal SW-123 at about £9.99 is the best value when you want a stated pole and no hose.

Common questions

Do I need a vacuum if I already skim?
Only if something has settled. Leaves and a waterline are a net and a brush. Sand, silt and the dirt that drops out of the net onto the floor are a vacuum. A hot tub that only collects leaves can stay with the kit. An above-ground pool with a sandy floor will not get that floor clean from skimming alone.
Will a skimmer net pick up sand?
It will push some of it and drop it again. The mesh on these kits is a surface tool. None of the six states a hole size, and none states a collection bag or a hose. Fine grit falls through or clouds the water. When the floor feels sandy, change tools.
Does a hose vacuum need the pool pump?
No. A hose vacuum uses mains water pressure from an outdoor tap, and it traps debris in its own bag or chamber. A vacuum through the skimmer uses the pool pump, a hose and an adaptor, and it sends debris to the filter. They are different connections. A hose vacuum does not run without that tap pressure.
What is the difference between a hose vacuum and a vacuum through the skimmer?
The hose vacuum is a pressure tool on the garden supply, with its own collector. The skimmer vacuum is a suction tool on the pool circulation. Allswim describes the second as a head, a hose, a pole and an adaptor, after the hose is primed. A wall-hung skimmer canister is a third object again.
Can one kit include both?
Yes, at some UK shops. The Intex maintenance kit at Discount Leisure is a net plus a hose vacuum head, with a pole stated at 2.39 m, around £17.99. The six amazon.co.uk listings in our hand-kit table do not state a vacuum head. Read the contents line. The word kit does not mean both tools arrived.
Is a robot the same choice?
No. A robot is a powered cleaner with its own drive and usually its own filter. It is not a sectional net, and it is not a hose head you push. If that is what you need, leave this comparison. The hand kit remains the right buy only for debris you can lift or wipe.
What should I buy for a hot tub that only has leaves?
A net, a soft pad, and a pole if you cannot reach by hand. LATERN states those heads and a five-section pole at £11.99, with 150 cm in the title and 120 cm in a bullet. You do not need a hose vacuum for floating leaves. You also do not scrub an inflatable shell with a hard brush, which Bestway states for the Lay-Z-Spa.
