Hot tub cleaning kit: skim and wipe, do not scrub the shell

Updated: 21.10.2026

You are standing at a Lay-Z-Spa or a rigid tub with leaves, a tide mark, and a parcel that says hot tub cleaning kit. You can walk around the shell, so the risk is the brush. This page covers what to lift, what not to scrub, and why the net is not the hygiene step. Pole length for a wide pool stays on the [pool cleaning kit buying guide](/hub/pool-care/pool-cleaning-kit/sub/pool-cleaning-kit-buying-guide). The six sets in the [pool cleaning kit comparison](/hub/pool-care/pool-cleaning-kit) are the tools below, with prices from those listings on 19 October 2026. We have not tested brushes on a shell. What you are cleaning on a hot tub

A spa collects leaves and a greasy line, and you can walk the rim. A pole of about 120 cm is often enough. The Lay-Z-Spa UK FAQ asks for a thorough clean at every water change, at least every three months, and for marks to be wiped between changes. It does not name a brush. The net lifts leaves. The wipe takes the mark. The cartridge and the sanitiser are still yours to do.

Which of these kits reach a spa you can walk around

LATERN at about £11.99 is the top pick for a tub you can walk around: five sections, a fine-mesh net, a pad and a cleaning brush, at 4.6 from 228 reviews, with 150 cm in the title and 120 cm in a bullet. Try 120 cm first. Celebration Directre at about £14.99 states five sections and two brushes, at 4.4 from 493, and no length. One note calls that net too big for an inflatable spa. Both Cadoal sets state 138 cm. Cadoal SW-123 at about £9.99 is the best value if you want one stated length and a small brush. OUWEWIN states four sections and no liner claim. KAHEIGN at about £9.99 does not state a pole, and many reviews say no handle arrived.

Soft shell, hard brush

Bestway’s Lay-Z-Spa manual says not to use hard brushes or abrasive cleaners. Soap and water, then a rinse, is the instruction. A curved edge describes the net frame, not the bristles. One KAHEIGN review says dye from the brush stained a Lay-Z-Spa and the reviewer’s hands. Wet a new head on a cloth first, and stop if colour moves. None of the six amazon listings names a floating scum sponge. The Hot Tub Company includes one in a £48 set. A LATERN pad is the closest head here, and it is still the wrong tool if it scrubs rather than wipes.

The net is not the hygiene step

Skimming lifts leaves. It does not add chlorine or bromine, and it does not rinse the filter. HSG282, paragraph 75, puts a private household tub with no financial gain outside the operational scope. Paragraph 76 puts a holiday let inside it. If you let the tub, a £12 net is not the control, and it does not replace a drain-down between guests. When the shell is torn, stop and use the maker’s instructions or, for a let, the HSE publication. How to lock a sectional pole is on the how to use a pool skimmer net page. Hang the mesh. Do not leave it over a wildlife pond.

Common questions

What should a hot tub kit contain?
A net, a soft pad or cloth, and a pole if you cannot reach the water by hand. On these listings, LATERN states that combination, with a length conflict of 150 cm and 120 cm. A floating scum sponge is what several £48 shop kits add, and none of the six amazon rows names one. Gloves, on KAHEIGN, do not replace a handle.
Is a pool brush safe on a Lay-Z-Spa?
Bestway’s manual says not to use hard brushes or abrasive cleaners. Soap and water, then a rinse, is the stated method. A curved net frame is not a soft brush. One amazon.co.uk review reports dye from a brush on a Lay-Z-Spa shell. If you cannot tell whether the head is hard, do not scrub the inflatable with it.
Do I still need chlorine if I skim every day?
Yes, if the tub’s instructions call for chlorine or bromine. The net removes floating debris. It does not dose the water, and it does not rinse the filter cartridge. Lay-Z-Spa’s pages still ask for water changes and filter care. A clear surface is not a sanitiser reading.
Does HSE guidance apply to my tub at home?
HSG282’s operational scope excludes a private household tub with no financial gain. You still follow the manufacturer on cleaning and chemicals. The exclusion is not a reason to skip the sanitiser. It is a reason not to treat a family tub as a commercial spa.
What changes if I let the tub?
A holiday let is inside HSG282’s scope. Checks, drain-down and sampling then sit with that business use, which industry sheets describe in more detail. The cleaning kit does not perform those controls. You can still skim leaves with a soft tool. You cannot point at the net as the hygiene regime.
Why did the brush stain the shell?
One UK review of the KAHEIGN set says dye came off the brush when it was wet and stained a Lay-Z-Spa and the reviewer’s hands. That is a single report, not a test of every brush here. Wet a new head on a cloth first. If colour transfers, stop, rinse the shell, and do not keep scrubbing.
Is a five-section pole too much for a spa?
Often it is more pole than the rim needs, and that is manageable if the sections lock and you can leave some collapsed. LATERN and Celebration Directre both state five sections. The useful check is the assembled length you can verify, not the section count. A pole that will not lock is too much in a different way: do not lean on it over the water.
