How to use a pool skimmer net without pushing the leaves away

Updated: 21.10.2026

The pole is in pieces on the patio, the net is still flat, and the leaves are drifting back. This is how to use a pool skimmer net that arrived as a sectional kit: count the parts, lock every joint, skim the top few centimetres, empty the mesh, and stop when the problem is green water or sand on the floor. It is not a ranking of the sets in our [pool cleaning kit comparison](/hub/pool-care/pool-cleaning-kit). Faults below come from those amazon.co.uk listings and their UK review notes, written up on 19 October 2026. We have not timed a skim in a lab. Check the parts and lock every section

Match the box to the title before you lean over the water. LATERN and Celebration Directre state five sections. OUWEWIN states four. Both Cadoal listings state three, and a hanging hole. KAHEIGN does not state a pole, and many UK reviews say none arrived. On the large-brush Cadoal, reviewers say a connecting clip was missing, or a drilled hole did not line up with the push-button. Click each section until it seats, then tug. Celebration Directre reviews include a head that spins and a net that snaps on first use. If it will not stay, stop. A missing section on day one sits under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 22, normally a 30-day right to reject. Length conflicts sit on the pool cleaning kit buying guide. Measure what you built.

Skim the surface, then empty the mesh

Fit the net so the frame meets the water at a slight angle, and move it slowly. A fast jab pushes leaves under the frame. Drag the top few centimetres, then hose the mesh. Empty it when it is half full of wet leaves, before the debris dries into the holes. If the pole is short of the middle, walk around. One Cadoal reviewer with a 16 ft round pool found 138 cm short of the centre. The pool’s own basket still has to stay clear. A hand net does not replace it.

Brush only the mark you can see

Swap to the brush or the pad only for a line you can see, and use light pressure. Bestway’s Lay-Z-Spa instructions say not to use hard brushes or abrasive cleaners. A curved frame is the net edge, not the bristles. If the shell is inflatable or vinyl, stop at a soft wipe. One KAHEIGN review says brush dye stained a Lay-Z-Spa. Do not scrub a green film and call it cleaning. The film is in the water. If you are unsure which head the shell maker allows, use the pad or a cloth.

When to stop and do something else

Stop when the surface is clear and the water is still the wrong colour. A net does not dose chlorine or bromine. Stop as well when the net comes up sandy. That choice is on the pool cleaning kit vs pool vacuum page. Stop if a joint will not lock. A snap on day one goes back to the seller. A torn shell, or a holiday let, is where you use the spa maker or the HSE guidance for spa pools. Then rinse the mesh and hang it. Do not leave fine mesh over a wildlife pond. Amphibian and Reptile Conservation warn that garden netting left over water traps animals.

Common questions

How do I assemble the sections?
Line up each button with its hole and push until it clicks, then tug. Five-section sets are LATERN and Celebration Directre. OUWEWIN states four. Both Cadoal poles state three, and you can leave a section off if the full length is more than you need. If a hole does not meet the button, do not drill it wider over the water.
How do I skim without pushing the leaves away?
Hold the frame at a slight angle and move it slowly through the top few centimetres. A hard stab sends leaves under the rim. Work the corners in a small circle, then lift. If the pole will not reach, walk around. Speed is what loses the leaf, not a lack of force.
When do I empty the net?
Empty it when the mesh is holding a handful of wet leaves, before it sags and dumps them back. Hose the bag straight away so the debris does not dry into the holes. A second pass with a clogged net only stirs the surface. If the frame is already split or holed, emptying it will not make it catch.
Can I brush the walls with the same pole?
Yes, if the head locks and the shell allows that brush. Use light pressure on a visible waterline. On a Lay-Z-Spa, Bestway says not to use a hard brush or an abrasive cleaner. Tile and grout, which OUWEWIN names, are a different surface from vinyl. If dye or colour comes off the pad, stop.
What if a section will not lock?
Take it apart and seat the button again. If the hole misses the button, or the clip was never in the box, stop using it. That fault shows up in UK notes on the large-brush Cadoal, and spinning or snapping heads show up on Celebration Directre. A joint that will not lock is unsafe to lean on. Day-one shortages sit under the 30-day short-term right to reject.
Why is the water still green?
Because a skimmer net removes leaves, insects and floating debris. It does not sanitise the water. Clear the surface so the filter is not choked, then deal with chlorine or bromine, pH and the cartridge or the sand bed. Another hour of skimming will not turn a green pool blue.
Where do I put the net afterwards?
Rinse it and hang it up to dry. A stated hanging hole, on the Cadoal listings, is there for a fence or a shed wall. Do not leave fine mesh spread over a wildlife pond. Store the pole collapsed if the joints allow it, so the next session starts with a count rather than a hunt for a section in the grass.
