Pool cleaning kit: what to check before you buy

Updated: 21.10.2026

You have a hot tub, a paddling pool or an above-ground pool, and every result calls itself a kit. Some boxes are a net you hold. Some add a short pole. A few UK shop bundles add a vacuum head and still use the same word. This page is the order before you look at stars: the water, whether a pole is in the title and the box, then the heads, the mesh and the shell. The six amazon.co.uk listings in our [pool cleaning kit comparison](/hub/pool-care/pool-cleaning-kit) run from £9.99 to £17.98, written up on 19 October 2026. What a pool cleaning kit is supposed to contain

A useful pool cleaning kit here is a skimmer net, at least one brush or pad, and a pole you can assemble. It lifts leaves and wipes a waterline. It does not dose chlorine, and it does not suck sand off the floor. Splash and Relax sell an Intex deluxe kit as heads only, for a separate 29.8 mm pole. On the six listings we kept, Celebration Directre and LATERN name a net, two brushes and a pole. KAHEIGN names a skimmer, a brush, a pad and gloves, and a pole is not stated. If the contents line does not name a pole, treat the kit as heads until the parcel proves otherwise.

Pole first: included, and which length

KAHEIGN at about £9.99 does not state a pole, and many UK reviews say none arrived. Celebration Directre at about £14.99 states five sections and no assembled length. The 90 × 30 × 90 cm line is not a reach. LATERN at about £11.99, the top pick, prints 150 cm in the title and 120 cm in a bullet. Plan with 120 cm until you measure. OUWEWIN at about £17.98 prints 150 cm and 47 inches, then 3.9 feet, about 119 cm. Both Cadoal listings say up to 138 cm (54.5 in), one figure rather than two. About 1.2–1.4 m often suits a spa you can walk around, and it is often short of the middle of a wide pool. If two lengths are printed, plan with the shorter one.

Heads, mesh and the shell

A net without a brush leaves the waterline. None of these six listings states a mesh hole size in millimetres. Fine is the seller’s word. LATERN states a 44 × 29 cm net, a 28 × 8.5 cm brush and a 15 × 9 cm pad. Bestway’s Lay-Z-Spa instructions say not to use hard brushes or abrasive cleaners. A curved edge is the frame, not the bristles. One KAHEIGN review says brush dye stained a Lay-Z-Spa. The hot tub cleaning kit page stays on that shell.

What £10 to £18 buys on amazon.co.uk

The entry band is £9.99–£11.99: KAHEIGN, Cadoal SW-123 and LATERN. The mid band is £13.99–£17.98: Cadoal SWDS-567, Celebration Directre and OUWEWIN. Cadoal SW-123 is the best value when you want one stated length at about £9.99. The Hot Tub Company lists a spa kit at £48 that adds a vac and a scum sponge. None of the six amazon rows names one. If a pole, a clip or an intact net is missing, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives a short-term right to reject, normally 30 days. If the floor is sandy, use the pool cleaning kit vs pool vacuum page.

Common questions

Does a pool cleaning kit include a pole?
Sometimes. On the listings in our comparison, five of the six state a sectional pole and KAHEIGN does not. Many UK reviews of that £9.99 set say no pole or long handle was in the box. Shop kits sold as deluxe can be heads only, such as the Intex set that expects a separate 29.8 mm pole. Read the included-components line, then check the box on arrival.
How long a pole do I need for an above-ground pool?
It depends on where you stand. A pole of about 1.2–1.4 m is often enough for a spa or paddling pool you can walk around. For a wide above-ground pool you stand outside the frame, so the same length may only cover the near side. One reviewer with a 16 ft round pool found a 138 cm Cadoal pole short of the middle. Measure that gap before you trust a second, shorter figure in the title.
Is fine mesh a measured hole size?
Not on these six listings. None states a hole size in millimetres. Fine is a claim in the title or the bullets. Reviews of the KAHEIGN net both praise that mesh and say leaves or debris still pass through, or that the net arrived with holes. If you need to catch something small, hold the mesh up to the light when it arrives. The word on the page is not a measurement.
Can I use the brush on a Lay-Z-Spa?
Bestway’s Lay-Z-Spa manual says not to use hard brushes or abrasive cleaners. Soap and water, then a rinse, is the instruction on that page. A curved plastic edge on a net is not permission to scrub the shell with a stiff brush. One amazon.co.uk review says dye from a brush stained a Lay-Z-Spa. Use the softest pad the shell maker allows, and stop if colour transfers.
What should I check on the day the parcel arrives?
Count every section against the title, then tug each joint before you extend the pole. If a pole, a clip or an intact net is missing, the Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 22, gives a short-term right to reject, normally 30 days. Do not force a button hole that does not line up.
Why do two lengths appear on one listing?
Because the title and a bullet were not written to the same number. LATERN prints 150 cm and 120 cm. OUWEWIN prints 150 cm and 47 inches in the title and 3.9 feet in a bullet, and the inch and foot figures are about 119 cm. We do not know which number the warehouse packed. Plan with the shorter stated figure, then measure. A second number is not a longer pole.
