Hanging plants in a small flat

Updated: October 2026

Floor space has gone, drilling is off the table, and the only bright spot is one window with a curtain pole you already use. Hanging plants in a small flat can sit in that light if the pot is light enough, the drop clears your head, and you treat the rail’s weight limit as a figure written for fabric, not for wet ceramic. This page is for renters and small rooms. Joist drilling and plug tables stay on the how-to page. Rim caps stay on the buying guide. Named rows are in the [macrame plant hanger comparison](/hub/plant-accessories/macrame-plant-hanger).

A rail you already have

The no-drill path in these reviews is an S-hook over a curtain pole. A reviewer hung a fern from a pole on Mkouo’s single at about £9.99. The flintronic four-pack includes S-hooks for a rail or an existing hook, not for bare plasterboard. Sambrini Studio makes the same split: a pole for a lighter plant, and ceiling work only when you know joist from board. Weigh the watered pot first. Dunelm’s 43–68 cm net tension rod is rated up to 3 kg, and longer 59–100 cm versions drop to 2.5 kg or 0.5 kg. Those figures are for voiles, not a houseplant trial. The no-drill Trinity eyelet pole lists up to 2.5 kg for lightweight curtains. A plastic nursery pot may stay under that. A glazed pot with a full saucer often does not. If the curtains catch the hanger, shorten the drop or use a window-frame hook with the landlord’s permission.

Short hangers for a low room

Many UK flats have ceilings around 2.3–2.4 m. An 89 cm or 100 cm cord, plus the pot, can put leaves at shoulder height. Shorter options here include the Mkouo three-pack at 58 cm and 73 cm, flintronic’s 80 cm pieces, and Eyerayo at 80 cm. SVUPUE at 100 cm is a long single drop. Ezylivin at 161 cm is the skip in a box room unless it hangs over a stairwell. Measure from the pole to where you want the rim, then pick a pack with at least one piece at or below that length. The 58 cm piece is often the one that clears your head. The 100 cm pieces suit a tall window you do not walk under. One buyer returned an 89 cm Mkouo because it could not be shortened, so do not assume you can tie off spare cord. Keep the plant in the window bay so it is not blocking the only daylight.

One window and a spider plant

The RHS describes spider plants as suited to hanging pots in bright indirect light, moist in spring and summer, and not left standing in water. That matches one window: a light plastic pot, watering at the sink, and the saucer emptied before you rehang. You need a net that holds the rim and a rail that survives a wet week, not the most decorative beads. Use a stated cap if you buy Muorruo up to 20 cm or the Mkouo single up to 23 cm. Otherwise test the net dry, and pair it with a short drop so the curtains still open. When the pot outgrows the pole, use a smaller pot or a rated ceiling fix with the landlord’s agreement. Flintronic’s S-hooks help if the pole fits them. Ceiling hooks in a pack are for the day you drill. In a studio, an empty saucer is quieter than a spill on laminate. The small-flat result in the reviews is the same plant at the window, with less floor taken.

Light pot, short drop, existing rail

If you will not drill, hang a light plastic pot from a pole whose packaging already covers that weight, using an S-hook. If the ceiling is about 2.4 m, prefer a 58–80 cm piece and skip 161 cm. If the curtains share that pole, offset the pot or choose the shorter hanger so the rings still move. A wet ceramic pot belongs on the how-to page, and only with permission to fix into something solid.

Common questions

Can I hang it if I cannot drill?
Yes, on a curtain pole or a solid rail with an S-hook, if the watered pot is inside the pole’s published weight. Many plant setups exceed a voile rating. Bare plasterboard is not the fallback when the pole is too light.
Will a tension rod hold a ceramic pot?
Often no, once the pot is watered. Dunelm’s short net rod is up to 3 kg, and longer sizes fall to 2.5 kg or 0.5 kg. Weigh the pot with the saucer. A dry spider plant is not that load.
Which length works under a low ceiling?
Prefer 58–80 cm pieces. Skip a 161 cm hanger in a standard room. An 89 cm or 100 cm cord plus the pot can sit at shoulder height when the ceiling is about 2.4 m.
Which plant suits one window?
A spider plant in bright indirect light, as the RHS describes, in a light pot. Keep the compost moist in the growing season and do not leave it standing in water. Empty the saucer before you rehang.
What if I still close the curtains on that pole?
Use a shorter hanger, or set the pot to the side of the curtain stack so the rings move. If it still catches, the pot is on the wrong pole. A heavier pot will not fix that.
