How to hang a macrame plant hanger

Updated: October 2026

The hanger has arrived, or you are standing under a ceiling with a pencil mark and a borrowed drill. Most failures happen at the fixing after the pot is watered, not because a cotton knot suddenly snaps. British flats mix plasterboard, lath and timber joists. A marketplace S-hook is not a substitute for an anchor rated in kilograms. This page is method only. Product rows stay on the [macrame plant hanger comparison](/hub/plant-accessories/macrame-plant-hanger). If you cannot drill at all, use the small-flat page. Rim sizing stays on the buying guide.

Weigh it after you water

Weigh the pot at the sink after a normal water, saucer included if it hangs with the plant. That figure, not the dry listing weight, is what the hook must beat. A soaked 12 cm ceramic pot can pass 2 kg. A 20 cm pot with compost and a full saucer is heavier than it feels dry. The RHS says a spider plant must not sit in water, and a full saucer also drips on the floor below. Compare your weight with the plug’s table, not with the cord. Fischer’s DuoPower 5 × 25 gives 0.12 kN, about 12 kg, in 12.5 mm plasterboard. EasyHook Round 6 with DuoPower 6 × 30 lists 7 kg tension in that board. Grapple Fix publishes 0.2 kN, 20 kg, for their anchor on sound 12.5 mm board at a 625 mm span. Those numbers belong to the fixing. If the watered pot is heavier, use a joist or a smaller pot. A plug rating does not make a 161 cm drop safe in a doorway.

Joist, rated plug, or an S-hook

Three points show up on UK guides. Screw into a ceiling joist through a pilot hole, with a timber hook, once a stud detector has found the joist. Wayfair’s UK how-to treats that as the strong default. Use a rated plasterboard anchor only when you know the board thickness and the maker’s table for that plug. An S-hook belongs on a curtain pole rated for more than voile, a beam, or an existing hook, not on bare plasterboard. Flintronic’s S-hooks need a rail you trust. Ezylivin’s four white hooks still need a solid substrate. Muorruo reviews say ceiling hooks shown in the photos were missing from the parcel. Fit only what arrives. British Gypsum says plasterboard will not support body weight between joists, so use a ladder, not the cord, when you drill. Stop if you cannot find a joist, the ceiling is Artex over old lath, a cable route is uncertain, or an old hook has cracked the board.

Seat the pot and keep the floor dry

Centre the pot so the rim bears on the knots, not on one strand. A narrow pot tilts in a loose cradle. Hang the cradle before the last water so you are not lifting a sloshing pot overhead. Water at the sink, drain, then hang, and empty standing water from the saucer. At least one buyer could not shorten an 89 cm Mkouo single, so set the height before you drill. A 161 cm piece can put leaves at head height in a 2.4 m room. A listed 58 cm or 73 cm drop is safer than cutting knots. After fitting, tug the empty hanger, then the dry pot, and check again after the first week of watering. If the anchor creeps or the board dusts, take the load off.

The fixing carries the water

If you can find a joist, hang a heavy watered pot from timber and use a ladder. If you only have plasterboard, use a plug whose table matches that board and still sits above your weighed pot. If you will not drill, an S-hook belongs on a rail you already trust, and only for a light pot. Stop when the ceiling, the cables or the weight are unknown. The cord is rarely the part that fails first.

Common questions

Joist or plasterboard plug?
Use a joist when you can find timber. Use a rated plug only when its table matches your board thickness and your weighed pot, with a margin. A slogan on the packet is not that table.
What do I do with an S-hook from the packet?
Hang it from a curtain pole, a beam, or an existing hook rated above the watered pot. Do not hang it from a bare screw in crumbly board. The hook in the box still needs a substrate that matches it.
How heavy is the pot once watered?
Weigh yours after a normal water, saucer included if it hangs with the pot. Do not use the seller’s grams. Several weight fields on this shelf are not credible, and a soaked ceramic pot is heavier than it feels dry.
How do I water without soaking the cord?
Take the pot to the sink, water, drain, then hang it again. Empty the saucer so water is not standing against the fibre or the floor. You are also avoiding a sudden load from a full saucer overhead.
When do I stop and get a fitter?
Stop if the ceiling is unknown, if you suspect cables, if plaster has already cracked around an old hook, or if the watered pot is above any consumer anchor for your board. Do not keep trying plugs in the same hole.
