How to use a garden kneeler

Updated: October 2026

You already own a foam pad, a plastic-backed board or a framed kneeler, and last time the border still left your knees hot. How to use a garden kneeler is mostly where you put it, which face goes down, and when you stop, not a new product to buy. The [kneeling board comparison](/hub/plant-accessories/kneeling-board) is there if the one you have is the wrong type. NHS and hospital notes sit behind the steps below, and we did not time a session.

Put it down before you kneel

Put the pad on the ground before your knee arrives. Faithfull’s page says to place the board down for hard, sharp and cold surfaces. On WORKPRO and Meff-Mluk the textured face goes down and the smoother face takes the knee. If you cannot tell them apart, press a thumb into both and put the grippier side on the ground. A plastic base changes how you leave. One verified UK review of the Faithfull FAITLKNEEL says the edge cut a knee while shuffling off. Kneel in the middle and stand, rather than dragging skin along the rim. If the mat arrived gouged, do not kneel on the damaged face. That choice is on foam pad or hard-base board. Portwest’s amazon.co.uk row says the KP05 is not water resistant, so a soaked lawn is a poor first test of that slab.

Kneel, and change knees

East Lancashire Hospitals’ knee-pain leaflet treats kneeling as something that can set pain off. It describes a pad, one knee down with the other leg forward, or a small stool. Two knees suit a short job on a soft border. One knee forward is the better pattern when the joint is already complaining. The leaflet gives no minute count. Change task when the knee warms, aches or stiffens. A pad does not prevent osteoarthritis, and a review that mentions a meniscus tear or a replacement is one person’s account. If you cannot bear weight, or the knee is hot, red and swollen, stop and use the NHS knee-pain route. A thicker mat the same day is not the advice. If the moment that fails is standing, that is getting up from a garden kneeler.

Move the pad instead of dragging your knees off the edge

A narrow pad makes you shuffle. Portwest is about 20 cm wide on the amazon.co.uk row, or 18.5 cm on the brand sheet, and Gedore is 210 mm. Both are one knee. Lift the pad, set it one pace along the border, and kneel again. Dragging it with your knees loads the edge and, on a plastic board, is the movement a reviewer linked to a cut. A garden rectangle, roughly 42–44 cm by 26–28 cm, covers a short stretch, then you still move it. Leaning until your knees hang off the front is how a pad stops doing any work. One UK review of the long folding mat says a seam tore after a single use. If a seam opens, stop using that mat.

Rinse, wipe, or unzip

Bare EVA and NBR, including WORKPRO, Meff-Mluk, ASelected and Portwest, are the rinse-or-wipe group. Knock the soil off, rinse only if the listing says the foam can take water, and let the pad dry. Portwest’s page says not water resistant, so do not store that one wet against metal tools. Brush a textured underside before the next kneel. HappyPicnic’s cover unzips and the bullets say it is washable. Take the foam out first. FINE GARDEN is water-resistant fabric you wipe, not a plastic base. Wipe it before soil dries into the cloth.

The session in one pass

Set the pad, textured or plastic side down, and kneel in the middle. Shift it when your knees reach the edge, instead of shuffling onto the path. Change to one knee forward when the joint starts to warm. Rinse, wipe or unzip according to the face you actually bought. Stop if the knee is hot, red or swollen, if a rim has cut you, or if a seam has opened.

Common questions

Which side goes against the ground?
On the WORKPRO and Meff-Mluk listings, the textured face goes down and the smoother face takes your knee. If your pad has no texture, put the grippier side down and keep the knee in the middle. On a plastic-backed board the plastic is the ground face. Do not flip that one to use the foam outside.
Can I use it on wet grass?
Yes, when the listing’s water claim matches a wet lawn. Faithfull’s plastic base is the clearest version in this set, and one UK review liked it for that. WORKPRO’s bullets say waterproof NBR. The KP05 row says not water resistant, so wet grass is a poor match. A fabric cover may hold mud, so wipe or unzip it afterwards.
How do I move it along a border without standing every time?
You usually do stand, or at least lift the pad, once your knees reach the edge. Shuffling off a narrow pad puts your knee on the path. Shuffling off Faithfull’s board is the movement a reviewer linked to a cut. Set the pad for the plants you can reach, then move it.
Should I kneel on one knee or two?
Both knees fit a garden rectangle and suit a short job on soft ground. One knee down, with the other leg forward, is the pattern in the East Lancashire Hospitals leaflet when kneeling sets pain off. Use a stool if neither feels workable. Change position when the knee warms. The leaflet gives no minute count.
When should I stop and rest the knee?
Stop when the knee is hot, red, swollen, or you cannot bear weight, and use the NHS knee-pain advice rather than a thicker pad the same day. Also stop if a plastic edge has cut you or a kneeler leg will not lock. A pad is not a reason to finish the whole bed in one kneel.
