Foam kneeling pad or kneeler board

Updated: October 2026

You are on gravel, a wet path or a patio, and the listings all say kneeling pad whether or not anything hard sits under the foam. A foam kneeling pad or kneeler board is a ground choice: closed-cell foam you rinse, or foam on a plastic base that blocks grit and can have a sharp edge. The [kneeling board comparison](/hub/plant-accessories/kneeling-board) includes both, plus covered cushions and one framed kneeler. We used the brand page and UK reviews, and we did not drop stones on the pads.

What a foam slab actually blocks

A foam slab spreads some pressure and takes the chill off paving. It does not stop a sharp stone the way a rigid skin does. BBC Gardeners' World Magazine, in its January 2026 kneeler guide, says a thick, rigid core is what stops you feeling stones on gravel. Memory foam is the soft layer, not the armour. Meff-Mluk’s review says the EVA pair has no hard shell for sharp gravel or rubble. WORKPRO is NBR with no plastic base, even though the bullets call the foam waterproof. Waterproof and puncture-resistant are different claims. ASelected’s title is 40 mm of EVA at about £7.99, and UK reviews of that pad talk about hardness, not about stones being blocked. Thickness on its own is on the garden kneeling pad buying guide.

What the plastic base changes

Faithfull’s FAITLKNEEL is the only plastic-base board in this set. The brand page describes soft foam on a waterproof plastic base, for hard, sharp and cold surfaces, with a working surface of 450 x 345 mm. Amazon lists it at about £21.48, 4.1 from 31 reviews, and a dimensions row of 5.51 x 34.9 x 56.31 cm. That 5.51 cm figure is an overall height, not a foam depth you can line up against a 40 mm title. A UK buyer said the hard bottom kept the mat dry on wet grass. Damp and grit stay under the plastic. There is no handle, and the board does not help you stand.

The edge is the condition

A verified UK review says the Faithfull edge was sharp enough to cut a knee while shuffling off. Another says the mat arrived gouged. Thirty-one reviews is a small file. One cut is not a recall. Check the rim with a finger, and do not drag skin along it. The movement is on how to use a garden kneeler: place the board, kneel in the middle, and stand rather than shuffle off. If the board arrives gouged, or an edge cuts because of a defect, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 usually gives 30 days to reject faulty goods bought from a trader. That is a shopper’s right, not a finding that every board is sharp. A five-year guarantee on the listing is a brand claim this comparison did not test.

Which to buy for the ground you have

On soil or lawn, buy foam. The top pick for two rinseable pads is the WORKPRO pair at a stated 36 mm. The best value 40 mm title is ASelected, if you already tolerate firm EVA. Neither claims a plastic skin. On wet grass a rinseable slab is enough when you will hose it. Faithfull’s hard bottom is the one reviewers credited with staying dry, after you have checked the edge. On sharp gravel, only a hard base changes the problem, and Faithfull is the only listing here that states one. Forty millimetres of EVA is not that skin. If the rim fails a finger test, reject the board.

Foam for soil, plastic for stones

If the ground is soil, lawn or a smooth patio, a rinseable foam slab is the match, and firm EVA can still feel hard. If the ground is sharp gravel or rubble, thickness does not replace a plastic skin, and Faithfull is the only board here that states one. Run a finger around that rim first. If standing up is the problem, neither foam nor a hard base is the feature you are shopping for.

Common questions

When is a foam pad enough?
When the ground is soil, lawn or a smooth patio and you want a light pad you can rinse. Foam spreads some pressure and keeps the cold off. It does not add a rigid core. UK reviews of 40 mm EVA in this set often call the foam hard, so enough is about stones and water, not a promise of a soft kneel.
When do I want plastic underneath?
When the ground is sharp, gritty or wet enough that water soaks up through a plain slab. Faithfull states a waterproof plastic base and a 450 x 345 mm working surface for hard, sharp and cold surfaces. Check the edge first. One verified UK review reported a cut while shuffling off the board.
Will EVA keep out water?
Sometimes, and not on every listing. WORKPRO’s NBR bullets say waterproof with low water absorption. ASelected’s EVA bullets say you can wipe or rinse it. Portwest’s amazon.co.uk row says the KP05 EVA pad is not water resistant. Do not treat EVA as a waterproof test result. A plastic base is a different mechanism: the water stays under the board.
Can a plastic edge cut me?
It can, on this evidence. One verified UK review of the Faithfull board says the edge was sharp enough to cut a knee. That is one report in a file of 31, not a recall and not a lab finding. Run a finger around the rim before you kneel. If it arrives gouged, treat it as a faulty item.
Is 40 mm of foam a substitute for a hard base on gravel?
No. Garden writers use about 40 mm as a thickness on hard ground. BBC Gardeners' World Magazine still wants a rigid core so you do not feel stones. Meff-Mluk’s review note says there is no hard shell for sharp gravel or rubble. Thickness and a plastic skin solve different problems.
