Garden kneeling pad buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You are kneeling on a wet border, or a thin square has just let every pebble through. This garden kneeling pad buying guide settles type, thickness, width and the water claim before a star rating looks convincing. The [kneeling board comparison](/hub/plant-accessories/kneeling-board) holds the eleven listings kept for this set, with GBP prices from the 19 October 2026 capture. We matched those rows to public UK sources and did not run a kneel test. If standing up is already the hard part, millimetres will not fix it.

Three types, and the one this page will not sell

A useful kneeling board sits on the ground. In this set that is a flat foam slab, a covered cushion, foam on a plastic base, or a framed kneeler that flips into a seat. BBC Gardeners' World Magazine, in its 2 January 2026 guide, also lists pads you wear and stools. Strap-on knee pads were taken out, so stars on a pair of caps are a different job. Foam slabs here are closed-cell EVA or NBR with a carry hole. A covered cushion adds a washable face that can hold soil. Faithfull’s FAITLKNEEL is the only plastic-backed board, with a brand working surface of 450 x 345 mm. Onadak is the only framed kneeler, at 4.43 kg and about £39.99, and the only listing with supports you can hold.

Thickness and the hard-ground rule of thumb

UK garden writers, including Garden Ninja, use about 25 mm as a minimum and about 40 mm on concrete, gravel or paving. BBC Gardeners' World Magazine cites an inner core of at least 2.5 cm. That is a rule of thumb, not a British Standard and not an EN 14404 mark. None of these listings shows that work-knee mark. Do not average two rows that disagree. The six-pack is stated at 1.6 cm and the Portwest KP05 at about 2 cm. Gedore’s 906 is 30 mm and only 210 mm wide. WORKPRO’s highlight says 36 mm and another row says 7 cm, so use 36 mm until you measure the pad. ASelected’s title says 40 mm, FINE GARDEN states 7 cm, and HappyPicnic’s row is about 5.1 cm. The folding mat states no foam depth.

Width, handles and water

Which? asks whether both knees can move, whether a handle works in gloves, and whether the ground face wipes clean. Pads around 17–21 cm wide are one knee: the six-pack at 17 cm, Gedore at 210 mm, and Portwest, where amazon.co.uk prints 30 x 20 cm and the brand sheet prints 40 x 18.5 cm. Do not average those two. Garden rectangles here are about 42–44 cm by 26–28 cm. Water is a separate claim. Only Faithfull states a plastic base. WORKPRO’s bullets say waterproof NBR. Portwest’s row says the KP05 is not water resistant. A fabric cover can be washed and can hold dirt. If standing is the failure, read getting up from a garden kneeler before you add millimetres.

What to do with the listing in front of you

Stop when a line fails. Name the type, keep any thickness conflict, check that both knees fit, and read the water row as printed, including “not water resistant”. If you cannot stand without a handhold, a thicker slab will not fix it. Price sits after those checks. In this capture the Portwest KP05 is about £3.84 and the ASelected pad about £7.99. The first is thin and the size rows clash. The second is a 40 mm title that UK reviews often call hard. HSE treats a pad as one control after the job changes, you take breaks, or you use a seat.

When to stop reading the listing

If the type is wrong, stop before the star line. If two size rows disagree, shop with both figures visible rather than a midpoint. If you can stand unaided and the ground is soil, a rinseable slab in the garden-rectangle size is the class to compare. If the ground is sharp, or the water row says not resistant, the plastic base is the open question. If standing is the failure, leave the thickness hunt.

Common questions

How thick should a garden kneeling pad be?
Garden writers use about 25 mm as a minimum and about 40 mm on concrete, gravel or paving. That is their rule of thumb, not a British Standard.
Is 16 mm or 20 mm enough for a patio?
It is a weak choice for a long kneel on paving. The six-pack is stated at 1.6 cm and the Portwest KP05 at about 2 cm. Reviewers still use the KP05 for short jobs on floors and decking. If the patio is the job, look at a stated 36–40 mm slab and accept that firm EVA can still feel hard.
How wide does the pad need to be for both knees?
Which? wants room for both knees to move. Pads around 17–21 cm wide are one knee or a toolbox. Rectangles around 42–44 cm by 26–28 cm are the usual garden size in this set. A 210 mm Gedore board will not give you that width, however firm the foam is.
Do I need a waterproof pad in a UK garden?
You need a face that copes with damp, and the listings do not all mean the same thing. Faithfull states a waterproof plastic base. WORKPRO’s bullets say waterproof NBR. Portwest’s amazon.co.uk row says not water resistant. A fabric cover may wipe or unzip, and it can hold dirt. Read the row on the page you are buying.
Why do two size rows on the same listing disagree?
Some amazon.co.uk pages print a brand size and a catalogue size that do not match. Portwest’s sheet says 40 x 18.5 x 2 cm and the amazon row says 30 x 20 x 2 cm. WORKPRO prints 36 mm and a 7 cm row. Do not average them. Gedore’s 450 x 210 x 30 mm is a listing where the rows agree.
