Long handled bulb planter for lawns and sore knees

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have a crate of daffodils, a lawn that needs a drift, and knees that will not forgive another afternoon on a pad. A long handled bulb planter is a 90–100 cm shaft with a foot tread so you cut the plug standing up. The word ergonomic on a thumbnail does not tell you whether the head goes 15 cm or 9.4 cm, or whether the bolted joint survived twenty holes. This page is that standing job, from the long tools in our [flower bulb planter comparison](/hub/plant-accessories/flower-bulb-planter). Named overall picks sit on [best bulb planter UK](/hub/plant-accessories/flower-bulb-planter/sub/flower-bulb-planter-best). Prices and stars were captured on 19 October 2026. This is not a laboratory soil test. A purchase through our links may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

When a 1 m shaft beats a short cone

Pay standing money when the job is your back, or the count. A few dozen tulips in a prepared border is still a hand-cone job. Fifty to 150 bulbs through turf, or any planting you cannot kneel for, is the shaft. You buy the tread and the length, not a different RHS rule. The hole still needs to be two to three times the bulb’s height. In this set the standing band is about £26–37, checked on 19 October 2026. Fiskars Ergo is about £36.99. The Jardineer two-piece set is about £29.99. BARAYSTUS and Orientools sit around £26–29. If you can kneel and you have a small bag, the extra length is dead weight. Gardeners’ World’s 2024 long-handle Best Buy was Kent & Stowe, and that SKU is not in this table.

Depth, treads and how the plug leaves

Listed depth is the trap. Fiskars Ergo states up to 15 cm, which covers a 5 cm bulb at three times. Orientools prints 8.9 cm diameter and 9.4 cm maximum. A 9.4 cm head is not automatically RHS depth for daffodils. One of two UK reviews sent it back because the depth felt inadequate. BARAYSTUS and both Jardineer standing pieces do not number a maximum, so you cannot buy them on a printed centimetre line. Fiskars lists a non-slip tread. BARAYSTUS and Orientools list a foot pedal. Closed-toe shoes on all of them. Keep the shaft vertical so the head cuts, then twist. Fiskars has a lever, so the core dumps without the next hole. The others are next-hole or tap-out tubes. UK texts already poke BARAYSTUS when the plug sticks. A lever is why Fiskars costs more. A cheap tube is usable if you accept the poke.

What fails first on cheap standing tools

Assembly is the first filter. Fiskars Ergo comes in one piece in UK texts. BARAYSTUS, Orientools and both Jardineer standing listings need putting together. That is fine when the bolts fit. It is not fine when they do not: a UK review of the Jardineer long handle sold alone says the nuts and bolts do not match. Another review on that listing liked the teeth for daffodils, then the handle bent at the puncher after about 20 lawn holes and went floppy. Materials files can clash. BARAYSTUS lists carbon steel and a plastic handle. One UK review describes a wooden shaft and a thick stainless head. Both strings sit in the saved listing, which is a reason not to buy it for a clean spec. Orientools prints carbon steel thicker than 2.0 mm and a 98 cm T-handle, but it has two reviews. A 4.0 from two reviews is not a standing win. Clay is the soil stop. One older BARAYSTUS buyer returned the tool on clay. Water the night before, as on any planter. If the head distorts, stop. Consumer Rights Act 2015 covers goods that are not as described or not fit for the ordinary job. Jumping on a bending joint is how you leave that argument.

Who should buy which standing listing

Buy Fiskars Ergo if you cannot kneel and you want the only standing listing here with a 15 cm line, a lever, a one-piece shaft and 306 reviews at 4.5. Live with the price, the handle-break review, and a two-year guarantee complaint. It is the standing pick in this set. It is not Fiskars Xact, the magazine Best Buy for backs. Buy the Jardineer two-piece set if you want a long tool and a small depth-marked cone in one order at about £29.99, you will assemble it, and you will poke the long tube. Skip the Jardineer long handle sold alone if you need a joint that survived this file’s lawn job. BARAYSTUS is the budget T-handle if you will plant in workable soil and clear stuck plugs. Orientools is a numbered 8.9 by 9.4 cm spec with almost no UK file. Skip it if a 5 cm daffodil needs three times its height. For the turf method and the six-week mowing pause, go to plant bulbs in a lawn. For the type split against hand cones, the bulb planter buying guide stays on criteria.

Common questions

When is a long handle worth £26–37?
When you cannot kneel, or you are planting a lawn drift of 50–150 bulbs and a hand cone would keep you on the ground for hours. It is not worth it for a few dozen border bulbs you can reach with a short cone. The extra money buys the shaft and the tread. Check listed depth before you pay standing prices for a 9.4 cm head.
How is Fiskars Ergo different from Fiskars Xact?
They are different SKUs. Gardeners’ World’s 2024 Best Buy for backs was Fiskars Xact, which is not in this table. The listing here is Fiskars Ergo 1057078: 1 m, about 1.95 kg, lever release, listed depth up to 15 cm, about £36.99. Do not treat Ergo as the Xact test win. Buy Ergo on this set’s own file: one-piece, 306 reviews, and a handle-break note.
Is 9.4 cm deep enough for daffodils?
Often not, if you follow RHS three-times height. A 5 cm daffodil wants about 15 cm. Orientools lists 9.4 cm as the maximum. One of two UK reviews returned it for depth. Fiskars Ergo lists up to 15 cm. A shallow standing head still saves your knees, but it can leave the bulb too high. Measure the bulb before you trust the centimetre line.
Do cheap standing tools need assembly?
In this set, yes, except Fiskars Ergo, which UK texts say arrives in one piece. BARAYSTUS, Orientools and the Jardineer standing tools go together with screws or bolts. Check the fasteners on the mat before you walk to the lawn. A UK review of the Jardineer long handle sold alone says the nuts and bolts do not fit.
What if the plug will not come out of the tube?
Poke it with a stick from the top, tap the tube, or cut the next hole so the old core extrudes. That is the motion on BARAYSTUS and the Jardineer tubes. Fiskars’ lever is the alternative. Sticky loam packs a cylinder. It is a nuisance, not automatically a defect, until the shaft bends or the bolts fail.
Closed-toe shoes on the tread?
Yes. The tread is a metal or plastic step you load with your weight. A trainer slips, and a toe under the tread is the injury. The same rule applies to Fiskars, BARAYSTUS, Orientools and the Jardineer plates. Keep the shaft vertical so the head cuts instead of skating, then twist.
