How to plant bulbs in a lawn

Updated: 22 October 2026

You want daffodils or crocus coming up through the grass next spring, not a row of bare circles that look like a failed repair. Planting bulbs in a lawn is a turf plug plus an unmown patch after flowering, not a cheaper hand cone used as a crowbar. RHS says scatter, plug or lift a turf flap, set the bulbs at three times their height and no deeper, then leave the foliage until it yellows, about six weeks after the flowers finish. This page is that UK grass job. The [flower bulb planter comparison](/hub/plant-accessories/flower-bulb-planter) ranks the tools. The plug sequence is on [how to use a bulb planter](/hub/plant-accessories/flower-bulb-planter/sub/flower-bulb-planter-how-to-use). This is not a laboratory soil test. Pick a patch you will not mow in April

Choose grass that gets sun, takes little foot traffic, and that you can leave shaggy while the leaves die back. A front strip you crop every Sunday in April is the wrong place. RHS naturalising lists daffodils, crocus and snowdrops as the usual grass bulbs. Large border tulips are a poorer match because the foliage is bulky. Plant in autumn, daffodils preferably by the end of September. The point of a drift is a scatter, not a line along the path. If you cannot leave the patch unmown for about six weeks after flowering, pick a border. Scalping the leaves is how next spring looks empty. A path from the gate will flatten new shoots. A side lawn or the far side of a tree is the usual fit. Mark the patch with canes until the first leaves show.

Scatter, plug, replace the turf

Scatter the bulbs so the gaps look irregular. Where one lands, cut a plug, drop it nose up, and put the turf back flush. Firm with a foot and water. The grass has to sit level or the mower later scalps a ridge. Depth in grass is three times the bulb’s height, and RHS says no deeper than three times. A 5 cm daffodil still wants about 15 cm. Replace the plug grass-side up. A proud plug dries. A sunken plug becomes a puddle. Lots of small crocus are faster as an H-shaped turf flap: cut three sides, roll the turf back, set the corms, and fold it down. Use the planter for daffodils that want their own hole. If the plug smears, the ground is too wet or the head is skating. Wait a day, or water a dry crust the night before. Firm with your foot, not a stamp.

The six-week mowing pause

The leaves feed next year’s flower. Cut them when the bloom fades and you starve the bulb. RHS says wait until the foliage is yellow and straw-like, about six weeks after flowering. That is the difference between a drift that thickens and a one-spring show. Mow around the patch. Do not strim the leaves to tidy the edge. When the foliage has yellowed, resume the ordinary cut. If you cannot live with unmown grass in late spring, plant in a border or a pot instead. The planter does not change that limit.

Which planter for turf in this comparison

Turf is compacted compared with a border. Draper 21861 is best value in pots and prepared soil, and UK texts say the chrome cone bends if you lean on it in grass or hard clay. Its listed maximum is 100 mm. DUFVCX likes damp turf and struggles after dry weather. The honest match for a drift is a standing serrated head. Fiskars Ergo lists up to 15 cm, a tread and a lever, and UK texts plant daffodils and crocuses without kneeling. The Jardineer two-piece set is the cheaper pair if you will poke the long tube. Skip the Jardineer long handle sold alone if you need a joint that did not bend after about 20 holes. Skip Orientools if 9.4 cm is shallower than your daffodil. Water dry turf the night before, and stop if the shaft flexes. The shaft and the shallow-head trap are on the long handled bulb planter page. The standing pick is on best bulb planter UK.

Common questions

Can I plant daffodils in a lawn with a bulb planter?
Yes. Scatter, plug a hole at three times the bulb’s height and no deeper, set the bulb nose up, replace the turf flush, and water. Leave the leaves until they yellow, about six weeks after flowering. A standing serrated planter is the honest tool for a drift. A light chrome hand cone is the buckle risk in this set when the lawn is hard.
How deep in grass?
Three times the bulb’s height, and no deeper than three times, per RHS. A 5 cm daffodil still wants about 15 cm. That is why a 100 mm or 9.4 cm head can leave the bulb too high even if the plug looks neat. Take a second bite or use a trowel for the last centimetres rather than forcing a shallow tool.
Hand tool or long handle?
A long handle if you cannot kneel or you have 50–150 bulbs through turf. A hand cone is slower and keeps you on the ground. In this set Draper’s chrome cone is also the documented lawn bender when you lean on it. Serrations help. Damp turf is kinder than a dry crust. Water the night before either way.
When can I mow again?
When the foliage is yellow and straw-like, about six weeks after flowering. Not when the flowers fade, and not on the first tidy weekend in April. Mow around the patch until then. Cutting the leaves early starves next year’s display. There is no separate healing time in days once the leaves have gone. Resume an ordinary cut.
Should I scatter or plant in rows?
Scatter. The point of a lawn drift is that it does not look like a vegetable bed. Drop bulbs from a bag, then plug where they land. Rows show every gap. An H-shaped turf flap is the exception for lots of small crocus, not a way to straighten daffodils into a line.
Will the grass die where I cut the plug?
Not if you replace the plug flush, grass-side up, and water. A proud plug dries. A sunken plug becomes a wet dent. Firm with your foot. The scar should sit in the sward. If you leave holes open, or plant so shallow the plug sits on the bulb like a cap, that is when a brown spot shows.
