Exterior wood primer for doors and windows

Updated: October 2026

A new softwood door or bare window frame needs more than a tin with the word exterior in an online bullet. Exterior wood primer is one layer in a system: the timber must be sound and dry, vulnerable new softwood may need preservative treatment, and the finished joinery still needs compatible undercoats and topcoats. Our [wood primer comparison](/hub/paints-and-varnishes/wood-primer) includes retail tins whose amazon.co.uk attributes contradict their own bullets about indoor and outdoor use. Check the physical label and current UK technical information before exposing any of them to weather. A decorating primer is not automatically a preservative, and neither product should be described as making a door waterproof.

Preservative and primer do different jobs

A decorating primer bonds to bare wood, moderates absorption and provides a base for later paint. A preservative product is intended to protect susceptible timber against fungi or insects and is labelled for that regulated purpose. One coating cannot be assumed to do the other's job because both happen to be applied first. If new external softwood joinery was supplied with a factory treatment, follow the joiner's documentation rather than replacing it with a general white primer. Dulux's Weathershield specification illustrates the distinction. Its system calls for preservative primer on bare or new softwood, followed by undercoat and gloss. Durability statements for that named sequence must not be transferred to the ordinary Dulux retail ASIN B002E2JX4G. The retail listing does not claim the role of a preservative.

Paint only dry, sound timber in suitable weather

Coating wet timber traps a problem beneath the paint film. Dulux Trade substrate guidance gives approximately 15–18% moisture as the exterior band, compared with below 14% indoors. Treat those figures as manufacturer guidance, not as permission to paint whenever one meter reading happens to fall in range. Check end grain, lower rails and places recently exposed to rain. Weathered grey timber is not a ready-made primer surface. Dulux Trade says timber denatured by more than about three weeks of exposure should be sanded back to bright, sound wood. The quick-dry sheet says not to apply below 10°C or when rain is likely. Our general guide to how to prime bare wood covers cleaning, sanding and coat order.

What the six amazon.co.uk listings say

Dulux Primer & Undercoat for Wood 750 ml is the clearest candidate in this set for a modest exterior wood job, but still needs verification. Its marketplace attribute says outdoor, and a UK reviewer describes using a 750 ml tin on a new external timber door. None of that turns it into preservative treatment. The larger Johnstone's listings are less coherent about location. Their bullets say interior and exterior, while the 750 ml, 1.25 litre and 2.5 litre indoor-outdoor attributes say indoor. The 250 ml attribute says outdoor. These conflicts cannot be reconciled by choosing whichever field suits the job. Ignore marketplace waterproof flags. Primer by itself is not a waterproof finish. Berger's 750 ml listing does not identify the binder or where to use it.

Knots and hardwood tannin outdoors

Exterior softwood often contains knots, and weather exposure can intensify resin movement. Treat them with a blocker that is compatible with the whole exterior coating system; an interior-only knot block is not automatically suitable outside. Dulux Trade's quick-dry guidance tells users to treat knots before primer undercoat. Oak tannin is a separate problem. Water can mobilise tannins and produce brown discolouration through pale finishes. Follow the timber or window manufacturer's specification where one exists. Our guide to knots bleeding through paint explains the distinction between softwood resin and hardwood tannin.

Common questions

Can I use a white wood primer on an external door?
Only when the product's current label approves exterior use, the timber is suitable and the rest of the coating system is compatible. The Dulux listing has an outdoor attribute and an external-door review, but it is still a decorating primer undercoat rather than a preservative or finished weatherproof coating.
Do new softwood windows need preservative primer?
They may, depending on the timber, factory treatment and joinery specification. Dulux's Weathershield system distinguishes preservative primer from later undercoat and gloss. Check the window maker's documents before adding treatment, as an unapproved coating can conflict with a factory-applied system.
What moisture level is too wet to paint?
Dulux Trade guidance places exterior timber around 15–18% moisture, but readings, species and coating systems vary. Do not paint recently rained-on wood simply because one spot reads acceptably. Check multiple vulnerable areas and follow the primer manufacturer's substrate limits.
Can I prime if rain is forecast?
Do not apply a coating when rain is likely before it can dry as specified. Dulux Trade also advises against applying its quick-dry product below 10°C. Allow for dew, falling evening temperatures and each coat's recoat time, not merely the weather at application.
Why does the listing say indoor and exterior?
Marketplace content often combines bullets, variation data and structured attributes that do not agree. In the Johnstone's listings, exterior bullets conflict with indoor attributes. Treat the location as unresolved until the physical tin and current manufacturer information clearly approve your use.
Will primer make an external door waterproof?
No. Primer is an adhesion and preparation coat within a larger paint system. Contradictory waterproof flags in these listings are not reliable evidence. Sound joinery, sealed details, compatible undercoats and a maintained exterior topcoat are all necessary to resist weather.
When should I ask a joiner or decorator?
Get professional help for rot, persistent damp, failed glazing details, extensive unknown old coatings or valuable hardwood joinery needing a specific tannin-resistant system. A coating cannot repair structural defects, and repeatedly painting wet or degraded timber only conceals the cause temporarily.
