Teak oil vs varnish

Updated: October 2026

The bench is either flaking, or it has gone silver, and you are trying to decide whether the next tin should soak in or sit on top. Teak oil vs varnish is that choice, plus two others people blur into it: a water-based protector, and no coating at all. On outdoor teak, a film varnish is the finish most likely to peel, and oil is a maintenance habit rather than a structural coating. Once you have decided you want an oil, the liquids are separated on the [teak oil buying guide](/hub/paints-and-varnishes/teak-oil/sub/teak-oil-buying-guide), the outdoor habit is on [teak oil for garden furniture](/hub/paints-and-varnishes/teak-oil/sub/teak-oil-garden-furniture), and the wipe-off steps are on [how to apply teak oil](/hub/paints-and-varnishes/teak-oil/sub/teak-oil-how-to-apply). Prices stay on the [teak oil comparison](/hub/paints-and-varnishes/teak-oil).

What each finish does

A penetrating oil goes into the grain and wears away from the surface. You renew it by cleaning and oiling again. A varnish is a film. It sits on the wood and fails when the film cracks and lets water in behind it. Indoor varnish is built for rooms. Marine or spar varnish is the exterior film, and even that is a maintenance system, not a one-time seal. The Log Company, writing about outdoor wood furniture in the UK, puts oils with annual recoating and exterior varnish where a tough film is the point, because indoor varnish cracks outdoors. None of these stops rot.

Outdoor teak

Oily hardwood outdoors is a poor home for a film. Gloster’s UK teak page says you cannot usefully paint or varnish teak, because it peels, and that a sealer is optional if you want to keep the new colour. Cyan Teak Furniture, Cotswold Teak, Teak Care and Corido say varnish chips because it sits on the surface, and several of them also reject teak oil.Varnish fails by peeling. Oil fails by wearing off,. Ronseal’s hardwood furniture oil is a water-based oil with a once-a-year bullet, not a varnish.

When oil, when varnish, when neither

Choose oil when the wood is bare, you want the grain visible, and you will wipe thin coats and come back later. Skip oil if you will not re-treat, or if the brand excludes your timber. Exterior oak is outside Furniture Clinic and Libéron. Choose an exterior varnish or spar varnish only when you want a film and you will maintain it. On oily outdoor teak, the furniture makers say that film peels. A garden bench in teak is the case where we would not start with yacht varnish. Choose neither when the teak is sound and silver is acceptable. If the old varnish is already peeling, strip to bare wood before you oil.

Indoor wood is a different sentence

Indoor teak, and other hardwood in a dry room, can take a harder film because rain and UV are not working on it every week. A satin varnish or a hardwax system is more plausible on a sideboard than on a patio bench.Furniture Clinic and Libéron state interior use. Many garden tins do not. A deck you walk on, or a boat’s structure, is not this decision.None of the saved listings prints a grams-per-litre VOC figure. Common questions

Can I varnish a teak bench for the British winter?
On outdoor teak, furniture makers such as Gloster and Cyan say a varnish film peels. A winter coat of indoor varnish is the weaker version of that idea, because indoor varnish is not built for rain and UV. If you want a film, it would be an exterior or spar varnish, and on teak you should still expect to maintain it. Leaving sound teak bare is the option those makers prefer.
If I already oiled it, can I varnish over the oil?
No. Varnish needs a surface it can grip, and oil left in the grain works against that. You would have to remove the oily surface back to bare wood, which is a strip, not a scuff with a sanding pad. Oiling over old varnish is the same conflict in the other direction. Ronseal says strip before teak oil.
What is a teak sealer if it is not teak oil?
On UK teak-furniture sites it is often their water-based protector, sold instead of oil and varnish. It is not a generic name for every tin that says teak. Ronseal’s teak-coloured hardwood furniture oil is a water-based oil with its own once-a-year bullet. Read the product type on the label before you treat “sealer” and “teak oil” as synonyms.
Is spar varnish the outdoor film, and is indoor varnish enough?
Spar or marine varnish is the exterior film people use when they want a tough coat and will maintain it. Indoor varnish cracks outdoors. The Log Company makes that distinction for outdoor wood furniture. On oily teak, even an exterior film is the finish makers expect to peel, so spar varnish does not cancel the teak warning.
When is oil the right choice anyway?
When the wood is bare, you want grain rather than a skin, and you will wipe thin coats and repeat the job. Oil is a habit. It is the wrong choice if you wanted one application to last without looking, if the brand excludes your timber, or if the set is already varnished and you have not stripped it.
Will varnish or oil stop rot?
No. Neither is a repair for soft, rotten timber, and a marketing line that says “preserver” is not an HSE wood-preservative authorisation. Replace or professionally repair rotten parts. Use a labelled biocidal treatment only when that is the product you actually need.
What should I do if the old varnish is already peeling?
Strip it back to bare, sound wood and let the timber dry. Do not oil the flakes and do not put new varnish over a lifting edge. Then choose one path: oil and maintain it, an exterior film and maintain that, a stated water-based protector, or leave the teak to silver if the wood is sound. Mixing two systems on one bench is how the next peel starts.
