Teak oil for garden furniture

Updated: October 2026

The chairs have gone grey, the table looks tired, and you want the honey colour back before guests sit down. At the same time, several UK teak-furniture makers tell you not to oil outdoor teak at all. Both things can be true. Teak oil for garden furniture is a choice about colour and how often you will repeat the work, not a duty that every set owes you. The wipe-off sequence and the rag warning are on [how to apply teak oil](/hub/paints-and-varnishes/teak-oil/sub/teak-oil-how-to-apply). Varnish as a system is on [teak oil vs varnish](/hub/paints-and-varnishes/teak-oil/sub/teak-oil-vs-varnish). Which tin has the most reviews, and which is cheapest per litre, is on [best teak oil](/hub/paints-and-varnishes/teak-oil/sub/teak-oil-best). Grey is not the same as failed

Left outside, teak weathers to silver-grey. Gloster’s UK materials page describes that as the normal path, and it says paint and varnish peel. A sealer is optional, and only if you want to keep the newer colour. Cyan Teak Furniture’s care FAQ advises against teak oil, linseed, tung oil and varnish on its outdoor teak. Cotswold Teak and Teakfinesse make the same kind of warning, and they sell their own protectors, so the advice is not a neutral lab. Grey on its own is not rot. If the slats are firm and you like the silver, you can wash off dirt and stop.

What oil does on a garden set

Oil brands describe a different job from the furniture makers. Ronseal and Cuprinol say their oils replace oils the weather has taken out of the wood. Barrettine says regular use limits weathering, greying and surface splitting. Furniture Clinic says it restores grey, old teak towards a golden-brown and claims a water-resistant seal on bare wood, plus UV protection. Those are listing and brand claims. They are not a promise that one coat keeps a table honey-coloured until next summer. Grey sets in the reviews were washed or sanded first. Gloster says a power washer erodes teak.

How often

The interval depends on which sentence you are reading, and they do not agree. Teakfinesse says oiled colour often greys again in four to eight weeks. That is that seller’s claim, not a test we ran. The once-a-year line belongs to Ronseal’s Ultimate Protection Hardwood Garden Furniture Oil in a teak shade, whose bullet says you only have to use it once a year. It does not automatically transfer to Bartoline, Rustins, or the clear teak oil tin. Cuprinol reviewers talk about spring and autumn. If you will not re-oil, the maker’s advice to leave the set silver is the more honest plan.

Which listing fits the garden

Garden-stated tins in this set include Bartoline’s 2 litres, Ronseal’s teak oil, Barrettine, both Cuprinol litres, Furniture Clinic, and the Ronseal hardwood oil in teak. They are not interchangeable. Furniture Clinic and Libéron exclude exterior oak. Iroko gates appear in a Bartoline review. That is one reported use, not a universal approval. The water-based hardwood oil is a teak colour with a once-a-year claim, not the screw-top teak oil. If the legs are soft rather than grey, stop. Common questions

Will teak oil turn grey furniture golden?
It can deepen the colour after you clean back to sound wood. Reviews describe that on sets that were washed or sanded first. Oil poured onto untouched silver is not what those reviews show. Furniture Clinic’s listing aims at a golden-brown on bare, weathered teak. The result still weathers, and makers such as Teakfinesse say the colour can grey again in weeks.
How often do I reapply in a British year?
There is no single interval. Teakfinesse cites four to eight weeks for oiled colour. A Ronseal reviewer read six months on the teak oil tin. The once-a-year bullet is on the water-based hardwood furniture oil, not on every teak oil. Twice a year appears in Cuprinol reviews. Plan on looking at the table top after a wet season and oiling again when the water stops beading.
Should I leave it to go silver?
Yes, if the timber is sound and you prefer not to start a recoating habit. Gloster treats silver-grey as normal weathering. Cyan and similar UK teak sellers advise against outdoor oil. Leave it if you will not keep up with the tin. Oil it if the honey colour matters more than the extra weekends.
Can I use it on iroko gates or oak?
Iroko appears in a Bartoline review of gates, which is not an approval for every brand. Exterior oak is excluded by Furniture Clinic and by Libéron. Check the tin against the timber you have. An oak table is a reason to leave those two oils on the shelf.
Is a water-based furniture oil a different job from classic teak oil?
Yes. Ronseal’s hardwood garden furniture oil in teak is water-based and coloured, with a once-a-year bullet. Cuprinol’s clear litre says water based in the bullets. Classic Ronseal teak oil is the screw-top tin and is not that coloured oil. Do not mix them on one table and expect a single colour.
Do I pressure-wash first?
No. Gloster says a power washer erodes teak. Reviewers who were happy with the colour had often washed or lightly sanded, and some did jet-wash, which is the step the furniture maker warns against. Use a gentle wash and a light sand where the surface is grey and dirty, then oil bare, dry wood.
What if the legs are soft rather than grey?
Stop. Soft timber is a repair, not a finishing job. Oil will not replace a rotten leg, and it can make the damage harder to see until the chair fails. A walked-on deck or a structural repair belongs with someone who does that work, not with another coat from a garden tin.
