Teak oil buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You have a hardwood table, a gate, or a set of garden chairs, and every promising tin is called teak oil. That name is a label, not a recipe. This teak oil buying guide is the step before a brand table: choose the liquid and the wood, then the litres. Shelf prices, star ratings and the attribute rows are on the [teak oil comparison](/hub/paints-and-varnishes/teak-oil). Which tin has the most reviews, and which is cheapest per litre, is on [best teak oil](/hub/paints-and-varnishes/teak-oil/sub/teak-oil-best). Wipe-off, coats and cloth safety are on [how to apply teak oil](/hub/paints-and-varnishes/teak-oil/sub/teak-oil-how-to-apply). Whether you should oil outdoor teak at all, rather than leave it or use a film, is on [teak oil vs varnish](/hub/paints-and-varnishes/teak-oil/sub/teak-oil-vs-varnish).

What the tin actually is

Start with the base, because cleanup and smell follow from it. Furniture Clinic’s 2.5 litre tin and both Libéron sizes name tung oil and linseed oil. Rustins names vegetable oils and resins. Bartoline, Barrettine, and the Ronseal teak oil tins (1 litre and 500 ml) are sold as teak oil without that recipe in the listing bullets. Cuprinol’s clear litre, model 5212362, says water based in the bullets and oil-based in the base-material field, so you should not tidy that conflict away before you buy. Ronseal Ultimate Protection Hardwood Garden Furniture Oil in a teak shade is a water-based coloured oil, not the screw-top teak oil tin at £14.29. A UV line or a water-resistant seal is true only for the ASIN that states it.

How much to buy

Coverage headlines are not interchangeable, and dry grey wood drinks more than a fresh board. Ronseal’s teak oil page says up to 10 square metres per litre and three coats. Cuprinol’s Naturally Enhancing page says up to 24 square metres per litre and two coats. The Amazon block for Cuprinol model 5212362 says up to 50 square metres per litre. Keep those three figures apart. Bartoline’s 2 litres at £13.00 is £6.50 a litre. Libéron’s 250 ml at £10.00 is £40 a litre. Barrettine’s 500 ml at £8.46 is the lowest shelf price and still costs more per litre than Bartoline.

Wood and place

Outdoor colour, indoor sheen, and a gate in a named timber are different purchases. Exterior oak is excluded by Furniture Clinic and by Libéron. A review that mentions oak driveway gates is one person’s result, not a cancellation of that exclusion. Iroko appears in a Bartoline review of gates. That is a reported use, not a statement that every oil in this set is approved for iroko. Furniture Clinic and Libéron state interior and exterior bare hardwood. Bartoline’s bullets stay with garden furniture. If the timber is soft or rotten, stop. Another coat is not a repair.

What to leave on the comparison

Stars in this set sit in a narrow band, from 4.3 to 4.6 where a star line exists. That is not a ranking of formulas. Use the main comparison for pack size, stated use, UV and water lines, and the price you will actually pay. Use this page to refuse a tin that names the wrong wood or the wrong cleanup. A qualifying purchase through our amazon.co.uk links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. We did not run a laboratory test, and we are not calling any tin the best teak oil in Britain.

Common questions

Is every teak oil the same liquid?
No. In this amazon.co.uk set the title covers tung-and-linseed oils, unnamed teak oils, a clear Cuprinol litre whose bullets say water based, and Ronseal’s teak-coloured hardwood furniture oil. Rustins adds vegetable oils and resins. Read the formula line on the listing you are about to buy, because the shared name does not mean a shared solvent or a shared timber list.
Do I need a water-based tin or white spirit cleanup?
Choose water-based if you want water cleanup and the listing says so. Cuprinol’s Naturally Enhancing page describes water cleanup, and the Amazon bullets for model 5212362 say water based, while the base-material field says oil-based. Libéron names white spirit for tools. If the tin does not say how to clean brushes, do not guess from the words teak oil.
Will 500 ml oil a table and four chairs?
Treat 500 ml as a small job or a trial. Reviewers got two coats on steamer chairs from one Ronseal 500 ml tin, and the same brand’s aerosol ran out before three coats on a bench. A dry table and four chairs can take more than Ronseal’s 1 litre. Libéron’s 250 ml is listed at 2.5–3 square metres, which is smaller still.
Can I use it on exterior oak?
Not as a default. Furniture Clinic and Libéron exclude exterior oak. Other tins may not name oak at all. A single review of oak gates does not override a brand exclusion. If your set is oak, stay with a product whose current page allows that timber, or leave the decision until you have checked.
Is the spray the same as the screw-top tin?
No. Ronseal’s 500 ml aerosol is model RSLTOAERO, a spray can. Reviews say the photograph looks like the liquid tin. The finish was also described as darker than the 1 litre teak oil. Confirm the format on the product title before you order.
Which listing is model 5212362?
That is the clear Cuprinol litre, ASIN B00Z6GQQII, at £15.69 in this set. The other Cuprinol litre, ASIN B004QV7H6O, is model QE-Z4CN-GGZ7 at £20.67. They are separate listings. The 50 square metre coverage line belongs to the Amazon block for 5212362, not automatically to the dearer tin.
Does a UV claim on one brand apply to the cheaper tin?
No. UV filters are stated for Furniture Clinic, Libéron, and the Cuprinol litres that list UV resistant. Bartoline’s bullets do not state a UV filter. Barrettine talks about weathering if you use the oil regularly, and the bullets do not mention a UV filter. A claim travels only with the tin that prints it.
