How to apply teak oil

Updated: October 2026

You have a tin, a bare hardwood chair, and a Saturday that is supposed to stay dry. The job fails in two familiar ways: a thick coat stays tacky, and a bundle of oily cloths can heat up on its own. This is how to apply teak oil as a penetrating finish, with the wait time taken from the tin you actually bought. It is not a ranking of brands. Whether outdoor teak should be oiled at all sits on [teak oil for garden furniture](/hub/paints-and-varnishes/teak-oil/sub/teak-oil-garden-furniture) and on [teak oil vs varnish](/hub/paints-and-varnishes/teak-oil/sub/teak-oil-vs-varnish). Which liquid you bought is on the [teak oil buying guide](/hub/paints-and-varnishes/teak-oil/sub/teak-oil-buying-guide). Prepare bare, dry wood

Oil needs somewhere to go. If the chair still wears varnish, paint, or a thick dirty film, Ronseal’s teak oil page says that coating has to come off before you oil. Reviewers who tried to lay Cuprinol onto intact varnish found it would not sit. Sand or strip back to sound timber, then let the dust go. The colour people describe after oiling usually follows a wash or a light sand, not oil poured onto untouched greying. Test a patch where a cushion will hide it. The wood should be dry. Ronseal wants a warm day above 10°C and no rain in the forecast. Do not oil timber that is soft, crumbly, or already rotten.

Coat, wait, wipe

Put on less than you think. A penetrating oil is meant to go into the wood, not to stand as a puddle the way a varnish film does. Use a brush or a lint-free cloth, whichever the tin allows. The Ronseal aerosol is a spray, and it is not the same as wiping the 1 litre tin. Spread a thin coat with the grain, watch the end grain because it drinks first, and then wipe. The wait is not one number for every brand. Ronseal’s teak oil page says wipe excess after a couple of minutes, then about 24 hours between three coats, and it claims the surface is rainproof in six hours. That six-hour line is not a year of waterproofing. If you mix those intervals you will either wipe too soon or leave a skin. The first litre disappears into dry furniture. It is not a sign that you should flood the second coat to catch up.

If it stays tacky

Tackiness is excess oil still on the surface. In hot weather, Libéron chairs stayed tacky for two weeks even after wiping. Cuprinol’s water-based clear oil left sticky spots when it was laid on thick. The fix is to take the surplus off, not to add another coat on top of a film that has not cured. Wipe back with a clean cloth and the solvent that tin allows. Libéron’s guidance uses white spirit for tools and for surplus. Do not try to bury a tacky coat under varnish.

Cloths and when to stop

Drying oils, including linseed, can make a pile of rags self-heat. East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service describes that fire as a bundle of cloths, not as the finished chair. Lay used cloths flat outdoors, soak them, or keep them in a metal container with a lid, and do not screw them into a ball in a bin. Libéron gives the same warning. Treat the rags as a drying-oil risk unless the tin tells you otherwise. Stop and get a professional when the wood is soft or rotten, when an old coating is unknown, or when the job is a walked-on deck or structural boat timber. A bullet that says preserver is not an HSE authorisation. A qualifying purchase through our amazon.co.uk links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Common questions

How many coats, and how long do I wait?
Ronseal teak oil: three coats, about 24 hours apart, on a day above 10°C. Libéron: a minimum of three coats and about 24 hours, wiping within about 15 minutes. Furniture Clinic: three coats on bare wood, wiping after a few minutes, dry in about 4–6 hours. Cuprinol Naturally Enhancing: two light coats. Use the tin in your hand, not a single blended timetable.
Cloth or brush?
Either, when the listing allows it. Furniture Clinic and Libéron name a lint-free cloth or a brush, and they want the excess wiped off. A brush can flood a detail and leave a run. The Ronseal aerosol is a spray, and reviews say the photo looks like a tin, so do not buy it expecting to pour.
What if it is still sticky the next day?
You left too much on, or the day was too hot or too cold for that oil to go in. Wipe the surplus off with the solvent that tin allows, then wait the full interval before another thin coat. Do not add varnish, and do not keep feeding a tacky surface.
Can I oil over varnish?
No. Ronseal says painted or varnished wood must be stripped first. Reviewers found water-based Cuprinol would not sit on intact varnish. Sand or strip to bare wood, test a patch, and only then oil.
What do I do with the rags?
Spread them flat, soak them, or store them in a metal container. Do not bundle them. East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service treats piled linseed cloths as a fire risk. Assume that risk for drying-oil cloths unless your tin says the product is not that kind of oil.
What temperature does Ronseal want?
Above 10°C, with no rain forecast, for its teak oil. The manufacturer’s rainproof claim is six hours, which is not the same as a season of protection. Other brands state their own dry times. A cold, damp British morning is a reason to wait.
When should I stop and get a professional?
Stop if the timber is soft or rotten, if an old coating is unknown, if you are treating a walked-on deck or a boat’s structure, or if you need a biocidal preservative for insect or rot attack. A garden oil tin is not that treatment.
