Magnet paint vs magnetic wallpaper and plaster

Updated: 23 October 2026

Standing in a hallway or a study, the choice is a tin of grey iron primer or a roll of ferrous wall liner. It turns on patch size, how long you want to spend with a roller, and what you plan to stick up. Liquid paint fits small doors, alcoves and custom shapes up to about 2 m² to 4 m². Magnetic wallpaper or a steel board gives a more even pull across a wide wall. The individual UK tins are in the [magnet paint comparison](/hub/paints-and-varnishes/magnet-paint). This page sets liquid primer against wallpaper, plaster and steel sheet. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Why hand-rolled paint and factory wallpaper behave differently

Neither liquid magnet paint nor magnetic wallpaper is a magnet on its own. Both rely on iron that gives a magnet something ferrous to grip. Factory-calendared ferrous wallpaper has that iron pressed to a fixed density. MagPaint and FIRST4MAGNETS FerroPaint rely on you stirring heavy powder off the bottom of the tin and rolling three to five coats by hand, so thickness varies from stroke to stroke. MagPaint and Tikkurila UK specify about 1.5 m² to 2 m² per litre over three coats. Stretching a 1 L tin across 4 m² halves the metal. A panel rolled thin at the edges, then sealed under two thick emulsion coats, can hold a letter in the centre and let it slide near the frame.

Three-plus coats and sanding, or hanging a stiff liner

Liquid magnet paint cuts into corners, around sockets and onto a panelled door, and it locks you into a multi-day clock. Stir the grey base for three to five minutes, roll three to six coats with four hours between layers, sand the grit lightly, and wait twenty-four hours before a topcoat. The sequence is in how to apply magnet paint. Magnetic wallpaper swaps waiting for handling. Ferrous liner is dense and stiff, so a full-height drop needs heavy-duty ready-mixed adhesive, a sharp blade and neat butt joints. Lining a 5 m² office wall can be one afternoon of cutting and pasting, with paint the next day. Five coats of FerroPaint on that same 5 m² spread the work across two days. Magnetic plaster sits between them: a trowelled skim with a seamless finish, usually a plasterer's job.

Cost per square metre and project size

On a compact patch of 0.5 m² to 2 m², liquid paint costs less because you buy only the volume you need. FerroPaint 1 L (about £26.99) states about 2 m² at three coats, £13.50/m². The twin 0.25 L FerroPaint pack (about £10.99) states 1 m². The three-coat sums are in the magnet paint buying guide. Past 5 m² the paint maths tighten. FerroPaint 2.5 L (about £46.99) states 5 m² at £9.40/m². MagPaint 2.5 L (about £82.46) is £16.49/m² before a topcoat. B&Q lists a 5 L MagPaint tub at £168 for 10 m², and Brewers prices 2.5 L of MagnaMuros at £118 including VAT. A 7.2 m² classroom needs at least 3.6 L, which is where a ferrous roll or a steel board starts to make more sense.

When to choose magnet paint, and when to skip it

Choose liquid magnet paint for an invisible, frameless patch of about 1 m² to 4 m² on smooth plaster, an MDF cupboard door or a curved alcove, when the load is light paper, postcards or photos on flat neodymium magnets. A bedroom or nursery patch should be checked against UK VOC and EN 71-3 notes in magnet paint for children's rooms. Skip liquid paint if you want spice racks, knife strips, key hooks or heavy ceramic souvenir magnets. Iron powder in acrylic does not match solid steel. For a kitchen wall or a workshop organiser, screw a powder-coated steel board to the wall. Skip liquid paint on damp plaster, and across a 6 m² to 10 m² briefing wall where ferrous wallpaper gives a uniform pull in one hanging.

Common questions

Why do some walls hold magnets more evenly with magnetic wallpaper than with magnet paint?
Magnetic wallpaper is calendared so the ferrous layer has a fixed thickness along the roll. Liquid magnet paint depends on stirring iron powder by hand and rolling three to five even coats. Thin passes leave a weaker grip under the topcoat.
When is magnet paint a better choice than magnetic wallpaper?
Magnet paint fits a small patch of about 0.5 m² to 3 m², a wooden or MDF door, a narrow alcove, or a masked custom shape. Liquid paint leaves no vertical seams and no leftover roll on a compact noticeboard.
How long does a 5 m² magnet paint wall take compared with hanging wallpaper?
One coat on 5 m² takes under an hour, but three to five coats need four hours between layers and twenty-four hours before a topcoat, so the job spans two days. Hanging 5 m² of magnetic wallpaper is one afternoon of cutting and pasting, then paint the next day.
Where does magnetic plaster fit between paint and wallpaper?
Magnetic plaster is a trowelled skim loaded with iron powder. It is smoother and more even than hand-rolled paint, and it has no vertical wallpaper seams. It is skimmed at a few millimetres so it sits flush, and it usually needs a plasterer.
When should you skip both paint and wallpaper and screw a steel board to the wall?
Skip both when the load is heavier than paper notes, flashcards or thin photo prints. Iron-filled emulsion and ferrous wallpaper are not a safe support for magnetic spice jars, knife blocks or heavy ceramic fridge magnets. A rigid sheet-steel board fixed with screws and wall plugs is.
Can you paint any colour over both magnet paint and magnetic wallpaper?
Cured magnet paint and paintable magnetic wallpaper both take standard UK water-based matt, silk or eggshell emulsion, and liquid chalkboard paint. Two thin coats of high-opacity emulsion, or a light primer then your colour, cover the dark grey without burying the pull.
