How to apply magnet paint: mixing, coats, drying and topcoats

Updated: 23 October 2026

A tin of magnet-receptive primer is heavy iron in water-based acrylic, not standard emulsion. Whether the wall holds notes through a colour coat depends on keeping a 1 litre tin inside its 2 m² three-coat limit, stirring the settled iron, and keeping the emulsion thin. Stretching the tin, skipping the stir, or rolling thick colour over an unsanded base is how magnets slide off a gritty patch. Tin ratings are in the [magnet paint comparison](/hub/paints-and-varnishes/magnet-paint). Below is preparation, mixing, the drying clock, smoothing and UK cleanup. Check the wall and mask the patch

The patch needs a dry, stable surface so the iron stays where you roll it. Three or four heavy coats on dusty plaster or flaking silk can pull loose at the edges. Wipe painted walls with sugar soap, rinse, and let them dry. Bare timber, MDF or porous skim needs a mist coat or acrylic primer so the first coat is not sucked dry. Mask the rectangle with low-tack tape. MagPaint and FerroPaint are sized at about 1 litre per 2 m² across three coats, so a 1 m by 2 m frame stops you rolling the paint wider and thinner. Call a plasterer or a damp specialist if the wall feels clammy, shows salt, or sounds hollow. Wait until new skim is a uniform pale pink before you trap moisture under dense ferrous coats.

Stir the iron sludge and roll the coats

Iron powder sinks in storage into a stiff dark grey sediment. A thirty-second swirl leaves weak binder on the first coat and lumps at the bottom, which UK reviewers on the MagPaint 2.5 L tin and the twin 0.25 L FerroPaint pack warn about. FIRST4MAGNETS specifies mixing FerroPaint for 3 to 5 minutes, scraping the bottom corners with a flat stick until the tin is uniform, then re-stirring every few minutes because the iron settles while you work. Use a 4-inch short-nap mohair or high-density foam roller. The single 0.25 L FerroPaint tin lists a short-nap roller in the box. A long-pile sleeve leaves coarse iron ridges, and a brush leaves tramlines. Apply at least three full coats inside the tape. Four or five coats give a firmer grip under pale emulsion. Volume for those extra coats is in the magnet paint buying guide.

Drying between coats and before the topcoat

Let each layer dry, and let the last layer cure, or the next roller drags wet iron off the wall. FerroPaint and Pebeo 093506 state 4 hours between magnetic coats and 24 hours before a topcoat, which matches the Tikkurila UK Magnetic sheet. The 2.5 L MagPaint listing also states 24 hours. The automated table on MagPaint grey 0.25 L lists 1 hour dry and 0.5 hour full cure. Rolling pale emulsion over uncured dark grey primer after half an hour lifts the wet base onto the colour roller. A workable clock is magnetic coats on Saturday with 4-hour gaps, and the topcoat on Sunday after 24 hours. Pack sizes and certificates are in best magnet paint.

Smooth the grey film, then paint over it

After the last magnetic coat has cured for 24 hours, press a flat neodymium magnet over two sheets of A4. If the hold feels weak, roll another magnetic coat before you change colour. Heavy souvenir magnets slide off regardless. Iron dries sandy. Buff with 180–220 grit to knock off nibs, then wipe the dust. Do not pour emulsion into the magnetic tin. Cleverpaint notes that mixing normal paint into the primer dilutes the iron. Two thin coats of high-opacity emulsion, chalkboard paint or a compatible dry-wipe coating cover the charcoal grey. Thick or textured colour buries the pull. If five coats plus a topcoat still cannot hold a heavy planner, see magnet paint or magnetic wallpaper.

Clean tools and dispose of iron-filled paint

Metal particles sink in a U-bend. Scrape wet grey paste back into the tin and wipe tools with kitchen roll before they go near a sink. Wash residue in a bucket of warm soapy water, let the silt settle overnight, pour off the clear water, and bin the dried sludge. Under GOV.UK and Recycle Now, liquid paint does not go down a drain or into a wheelie bin. Harden leftover water-based paint by leaving the lid off in a ventilated shed away from children and pets, or by stirring in sand, soil, cat litter or sawdust until it is solid. Take the solid tin to the council recycling centre.

Common questions

How long should you stir magnet paint before rolling it on?
Stir for 3 to 5 minutes, scraping the bottom edges with a flat stick. Heavy iron settles into a dense layer in storage, so a brief swirl leaves sludge at the base and weak binder at the top. Re-stir every few minutes while you work.
What roller gives the best finish with iron-filled paint?
A 4-inch short-nap mohair or high-density foam roller gives the smoothest film. Long-pile emulsion sleeves trap binder and leave a coarse stipple that shows through the topcoat. A brush alone leaves streaky ridges and uneven hold.
How many coats do you need, and how long between them?
Three full coats at about 1 litre per 2 m² is the stated minimum for MagPaint and FIRST4MAGNETS FerroPaint. Four or five coats give a stronger grip under two layers of pale emulsion or heavier card. Allow 4 hours between magnetic coats.
Why does listing B0CJVQ2J8J say 0.5 hours cure when the sheets say 24 hours?
B0CJVQ2J8J is MagPaint grey 0.25 L. Its specification table lists 1 hour dry and 0.5 hour full cure. FerroPaint, Pebeo and the Tikkurila UK sheet say 4 hours between coats and 24 hours before a topcoat, and the 2.5 L MagPaint listing states 24 hours. Wait 24 hours before you topcoat.
How should you clean rollers and dispose of leftover magnet paint in the UK?
Wipe wet paint off with paper towels, then rinse in a bucket of warm soapy water so the iron can settle and be binned once dry. Do not pour liquid paint down a drain. Harden leftovers with sand, soil or sawdust, then take the tin to the council recycling centre.
