Magnet paint for a child's room: VOC limits, EN 71-3 and magnet safety

Updated: 23 October 2026

A play wall for alphabet letters or drawings usually starts with tins labelled child-friendly or non-toxic on amazon.co.uk. Once water-based iron primer is dry under washable bedroom emulsion, the wall sits inert, and those slogans still hide differences in documented testing. The checks are a verified VOC figure and an EN 71-3 sheet, ventilation while the base coats cure, and keeping small swallowable neodymium magnets out of reach. All nine UK tins are in the [magnet paint comparison](/hub/paints-and-varnishes/magnet-paint). This page is the certificates and the magnets, not the area maths. What child-friendly and non-toxic mean on UK listings

Nursery keywords on amazon.co.uk are not a UK statutory certificate. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, sections 9 and 10, paint must match its description and be fit for purpose. Safe and child-friendly is not a migration report or a grams-per-litre figure unless a technical datasheet says so. In the 22 October 2026 fields, these tins are listed for indoor use and almost every listing flags non-toxic. Pebeo 250 ml (about £18.99) prints CE compliant without naming a directive. FerroPaint 1 L (about £26.99) names playroom and classroom, and low VOC, while the table records an age range of Adult and paint type Watercolour. That Adult field is about who should apply the wet paint. Compare the 2.5 L tins from the datasheet in best magnet paint.

UK VOC limits and what EN 71-3 does

Two benchmarks matter for a child's bedroom: the UK VOC limit for wet paint in the tin, and EN 71-3 migration testing for the dried coating. Under SI 2012/1715, Schedule 2, subcategory (a) for interior matt walls allows up to 30 g/L, and subcategory (i) for water-borne one-pack performance coatings allows up to 140 g/L. MagPaint's datasheet for the 2.5 L tin (about £82.46) and the 0.25 L tin (about £20.99) uses the 30 g/L interior matt class and declares 0 g/L VOC, a lead-free formula and fire class A2-s1,d0. Tikkurila's UK sheet of 11 May 2023 places its Magnetic primer in category A/i, up to 140 g/L. FerroPaint 2.5 L (about £46.99) says low VOC in the bullets and publishes no g/L number. MagPaint is the only brand in this set whose datasheet certifies EN 71-3, the toy standard for whether trace metals leach if a child licks a painted surface. It is not a mandatory UK law for bedroom walls. Choose MagPaint when you want that paper trail. FerroPaint is the lower-cost indoor emulsion when a formal certificate is not required.

The bedroom hazard is the magnets, not the dried film

The physical danger is the magnets you bring in afterwards. Liquid paint is a thin ferrous layer, so Boards Direct, Cleverpaint and Tikkurila specify flat-faced neodymium magnets. Small loose discs, around 5 mm or 10 mm, are a serious ingestion hazard, because two rare-earth magnets can pinch bowel walls together. Plastic alphabet letters usually hide a weak ferrite strip. On MagPaint 2.5 L, one parent reported that three coats held alphabet letters on a door. On FerroPaint 1 L, plastic letters slid after four coats unless neodymium magnets were used. If children under three use the room, do not leave small loose neodymium discs on the wall. Use four generous coats, a thin topcoat, and wide one-piece magnets that cannot fit in a child's mouth. Sheet options are in magnet paint or magnetic wallpaper.

While the room is being painted, and after

A 0 g/L VOC declaration still means the bedroom stays empty while the wet iron layers cure. Every tin in the comparison wants at least three magnetic coats, about 2 m² per litre across three layers, as calculated in the magnet paint buying guide, then an overnight wait. Keep children and pets out while you stir, roll and sand, with windows open. Wait the 24 hours MagPaint and FIRST4MAGNETS specify after the last grey coat before one or two thin coats of washable bedroom emulsion. Do not pour leftover iron-rich liquid down the sink. Harden water-based leftovers with sand or sawdust and take the tin to a council recycling centre, which is the GOV.UK and Recycle Now route. The dried coating is unmagnetised iron dust. FIRST4MAGNETS notes that FerroPaint does not interfere with Wi-Fi, television or radio unless it is painted across a router enclosure.

Common questions

Is magnetic paint safe for a child's bedroom in the UK?
Dried water-based magnetic paint sits under normal bedroom emulsion and is not an ongoing fume source once it has cured. For a documented trail, MagPaint's datasheet states 0 g/L VOC under the 30 g/L interior matt limit in SI 2012/1715, and EN 71-3. Ventilate while you apply it and wait 24 hours before the topcoat.
What does EN 71-3 mean on a tin of magnet paint?
EN 71-3 is the toy-safety standard for whether heavy metals such as lead, arsenic or cadmium migrate from a dried coating if a child licks or swallows flakes. It is not a mandatory UK rule for wall paint. In this amazon.co.uk set only MagPaint's datasheet certifies it. FerroPaint and Pebeo do not.
Why does the FerroPaint 1 L listing say Age Range: Adult?
The age-range description Adult on FerroPaint 1 L is an amazon.co.uk catalogue attribute that an adult should handle the wet DIY paint, even though the title names playrooms and classrooms. The same listing mislabels the paint type as Watercolour while the bullets describe a ferrous emulsion.
Are neodymium magnets safe for a child's magnetic wall?
Small loose neodymium magnets are dangerous around babies and young children. Swallowing two or more can pinch and perforate bowel tissue. The paint holds them better than weak ferrite strips. Do not put small loose rare-earth discs in a young child's room. Use wide-base magnetic toys that cannot fit in a child's mouth.
Will plastic magnetic alphabet letters stick to magnet paint?
Plastic letters often use a weak ferrite strip recessed in the shell, which leaves a gap and a weaker grip. UK reviewers report light alphabet letters held over three coats of MagPaint on a smooth door, and plastic letters slipping on four coats of FerroPaint 1 L. Four smooth coats and a thin topcoat give light letters the best chance.
