Magnet paint buying guide: how to size your tin, coats and magnets

Updated: 23 October 2026

If you are measuring a kitchen alcove, an office notice patch or a bedroom door, most mistakes happen in the basket. Buyers order a 250 ml tin for a whole wall, compare pack prices instead of cost per finished square metre, and test the patch with heavy ceramic fridge magnets. This guide covers three-coat coverage, the price per square metre in the 22 October 2026 amazon.co.uk snapshot, and listing clashes to check before checkout. Full ratings are in the [magnet paint comparison](/hub/paints-and-varnishes/magnet-paint). Budget by finished area and use flat neodymium magnets. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Prices are stored shelf figures, not a laboratory pull test.

How magnet-receptive paint works and what it can hold

Magnet paint sold in the UK is not a magnet in a tin, and steel clips will not stick to it alone. It is a dark grey water-based primer loaded with fine iron or magnetite, so a wall, door or panel becomes magnet-receptive. Pull is lighter than on a fridge door because the particles sit in acrylic rather than solid steel. Three coats of FerroPaint 1 L (about £26.99) or MagPaint 2.5 L (about £82.46) can let one neodymium pin hold two sheets of 80 gsm A4 paper. Framed pictures and heavy tourist magnets still slide off.

Finished square metres against single-coat claims

Budget strictly by three-coat finished square metres. MagPaint and FIRST4MAGNETS FerroPaint state about 2 m² per litre across three coats. Tikkurila UK specifies 1.5 m² per litre across three coats. A 0.25 L tin finishes 0.5 m², a 1 L tin finishes 2 m² (one side of a typical internal door), and a 2.5 L tin finishes 5 m². Stretching 1 L across 6 m² in one pass leaves the iron too sparse to hold paper. The 250 ml Pebeo tin (about £18.99) claims 2.5 to 3 m² with no coat count, which is a single thin layer, and magnets can slide after four thin coats.

Price per finished square metre

Pack price misleads because amazon.co.uk tins run from 250 ml to 2.5 L. On the 22 October 2026 snapshot, cost per finished square metre runs from £9.40 to £41.98. A 2.5 L tin only saves money if the patch needs more than about 2 m² or extra coats. FerroPaint 2.5 L at about £46.99 is £9.40/m² for a stated 5 m². MagPaint 2.5 L at about £82.46 is £16.49/m² and adds the 279-rating file. FerroPaint 1 L at about £26.99 is £13.50/m² for 2 m². Twin 0.25 L FerroPaint tins at about £10.99 cover a stated 1 m². MagPaint 0.25 L at about £20.99 is £41.98/m². Brand verdicts are in best magnet paint.

Magnets and the colour coat

A five-coat patch still disappoints if you use ferrite fridge magnets or mix coloured emulsion into the tin. Boards Direct, Cleverpaint and Tikkurila specify flat neodymium magnets, because a light disc pulls harder than a ceramic ferrite block. Every layer over the grey primer adds a gap, and grip drops as that gap grows. Do not pour coloured emulsion into the magnet paint. Roll three or four neat grey coats, leave it 24 hours, then one or two thin coats of matt emulsion, chalkboard or dry-wipe paint. Coat timings are in how to apply magnet paint.

Listing clashes to check before you order

Check the technical table and the review dates before you pay. The 0.25 L MagPaint tin (about £20.99) shares the 4.0 from 279 ratings, including 2015 bodies, with the 2.5 L tin, and pairs a 1-hour dry time with a 0.5-hour full cure. The 1 L FerroPaint tin is labelled Watercolour. The single 0.25 L FerroPaint tin prints 0.5m instead of 0.5 m². Waterproof flags on the MagPaint tins and the twin 0.5 L FerroPaint pack do not agree with the water-resistance line, so treat these as indoor dry-room primers.

Common questions

Does magnet paint make the wall magnetic, or do magnets stick to the iron in the paint?
Magnet paint does not magnetise the wall, so paperclips or keys will not stick to it. The acrylic binder holds fine iron or magnetite once it is dry. Magnets cling to those particles, with a lighter pull than a fridge door because the iron sits in a thin film.
How many square metres does 1 litre of magnet paint finish once three coats are on?
A 1 litre tin of MagPaint or FIRST4MAGNETS FerroPaint finishes about 2 m² across three coats. Tikkurila UK Magnetic finishes about 1.5 m² per litre across three coats. Two square metres is about one side of a standard internal door. Spreading 1 litre wider leaves the film too thin.
Why does a 250 ml craft tin claim 2.5–3 m² when 1 litre wall tins only claim 2 m²?
The 250 ml Pebeo tin (about £18.99) states 2.5 to 3 m² per can with no coat count, which is a single thin coat. The 1 litre wall tins state 2 m² for three coats together. Divide an unstated coverage figure by three before you compare tins.
What does magnet paint cost per finished square metre in the UK?
In the 22 October 2026 amazon.co.uk snapshot, three-coat magnet paint costs £9.40 to £41.98 per finished square metre. The lowest unit cost is FerroPaint 2.5 L at about £46.99 for 5 m². MagPaint 2.5 L at about £82.46 for 5 m² is £16.49/m². MagPaint 0.25 L at about £20.99 for 0.5 m² is £41.98/m².
Why do ordinary souvenir fridge magnets slide off a painted magnetic wall?
Holiday souvenir magnets pair a weak ferrite block with a heavy resin or ceramic ornament. A painted wall holds dispersed iron powder in acrylic, not solid steel, so those magnets cannot hold their own weight. Flat neodymium discs hold notes and photos more reliably.
Can you mix coloured emulsion into magnet paint to skip a topcoat?
No. Stirring wall paint into the grey primer dilutes the iron in every coat and weakens the pull, which is the warning UK supplier Cleverpaint gives. Roll at least three neat coats, leave 24 hours, then apply one or two thin emulsion coats on top.
