Gold leaf or gold paint

Updated: October 2026

You searched for gold leaf and landed on a jar whose title says gold leaf paint. The included line is still a liquid, a brush or an aerosol. That is paint or lacquer, not a sheet of metal. This page is gold leaf or gold paint for the eleven listings on the [gold lacquer comparison](/hub/paints-and-varnishes/gold-lacquer). Products Compared checked those amazon.co.uk files on 21 October 2026. None includes sheets of leaf. We did not lay leaf or brush a panel. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. There is no winner here. Once you know it is paint, frames are on [gold paint for furniture](/hub/paints-and-varnishes/gold-lacquer/sub/gold-lacquer-furniture).

Three different golds

Paint is pigment in a binder. Up close you see brush texture. Wrights of Lymm put the split in public: paint shows the brush, genuine leaf is another optical film, and imitation leaf is a third product. Imitation leaf, including Dutch metal, is a thin brass sheet. Priory Polishes call imitation leaf brass that can tarnish. None of that kit is in these ASINs. Genuine leaf is high-carat metal, not a colour name. Wrights treat bare exterior genuine leaf as different from imitation leaf, which they call a poor bet outdoors. We did not measure it, and it does not transfer to acrylic. Guild Lane’s marketing calls Super GILD an alternative to leaf. The amazon.co.uk file is still 60 ml of acrylic at £37.48. If the box contains liquid, you bought paint.

When paint is enough

Paint is the right tool when you want a brush and a gold seen at a normal distance. Frames, door numbers, craft and a moulding you will not inspect with a magnifier are that job. A watery litre is still paint. A 60 ml jar that reviewers compare with leaf is still paint. ARTFLY, both Nicpro bottles, Meuvcol and Limino put gold leaf in the name. The included items are paint, sometimes a brush, gloves or a varnish. Guild Lane markets itself against leaf, and the UK texts describe a bright metallic on frames and door furniture. You can choose it as paint. You cannot choose it as a sheet, and a non-tarnish bullet is seller copy. Rustins on a mirror surround is a coating, not gilding. Shade words belong on the buying guide.

When leaf is the other purchase

Leaf is the other purchase when someone will stand close enough to see brush texture. Signwriting, carved detail, and a repair beside existing leaf are the usual cases. Imitation leaf wants size, a careful lay, and a seal, because brass can tarnish. This page will not teach the lay. Do not attempt exterior leaf with a craft bottle because a field said outdoor. Touching a missing flake with a jar is a colour patch, not a leaf repair. From a metre away a bright acrylic can quiet the gap. At arm’s length it reads as paint beside metal. If that is acceptable, use the top pick page to see which jar the reviews call bright. If the piece is a listed interior, stop and use a gilder. Nothing here includes size or a book of leaves.

Every listing here is still paint

Guild Lane, ARTFLY, both Nicpro bottles, VGSEBA, Rustins, Jacquard, Limino and Meuvcol are liquids. Tamiya TS-21 and the Crowders / Premier can are lacquer aerosols. No included-components line lists sheets or size. Gold leaf paint does not move a liquid into the leaf column.

Common questions

Is liquid gold the same as gold leaf?
No. Liquid gold here is pigment in acrylic, water-borne paint or lacquer. Gold leaf is a metal sheet, genuine or imitation, laid onto size. ARTFLY, Nicpro, Meuvcol and Limino use gold leaf as a paint name. If the included line is paint, a brush, gloves or an aerosol, you have not bought sheets.
When is paint the right choice?
Paint suits frames, door furniture, craft and mouldings seen at a normal distance, and any area too large to leaf in an evening. You do not need gilding size. Limino’s varnish is a topcoat, not size. Paint is the wrong choice when you must match existing leaf at arm’s length, or when a listed interior needs a gilder.
When is imitation leaf the right choice?
Choose imitation leaf when you want a metal sheet, you accept brass rather than high-carat gold, and you will seal it. Priory Polishes describe Annie Sloan’s leaf as brass that can tarnish, loose for carving and transfer for flats. Wrights say imitation leaf is a poor bet outdoors. None of these eleven ASINs is that sheet.
When is genuine leaf the right choice?
Genuine leaf is for a high-carat specification: close-view work, signwriting, or a repair beside leaf that is already there. Wrights treat exterior genuine leaf as different from imitation leaf. A listed interior should go to a gilder. A jar cannot be thinned into a sheet.
Will gold paint tarnish outside?
These files do not prove either way. Brass leaf can tarnish, which is why leaf pages tell you to seal it. That fact is about brass sheet, not acrylic. Guild Lane’s non-tarnish bullet is seller copy. We did not weather a panel. If the outdoor lines clash, do not put the bottle on a gate and call it tested.
Do I need size and a seal for paint?
Size is the adhesive for leaf, not for these paints. A water-based gold is brushed on like other acrylic. Limino includes a varnish, which is a topcoat, not gold size. Guild Lane says no topcoat for most indoor decorative projects. Do not buy gilding size because a title said leaf. If your label is silent, the honest line is n/a.
Which products here are still paint?
All eleven. The jars and bottles are liquids. Tamiya TS-21 and the Crowders / Premier can are lacquer aerosols. Rustins is water-borne acrylic on the label and Watercolour on Amazon, and it is still paint. No included-components line lists sheets or size.
