How to apply gold paint

Updated: October 2026

The first coat of gold often looks thin or streaky, and it is tempting to load the brush and scrub. That is how metallic pigment marks. This is how to apply gold paint from the tins and sprays in our [gold lacquer comparison](/hub/paints-and-varnishes/gold-lacquer): stir, lay thin coats, and stop. It does not rank the eleven listings. Products Compared used the amazon.co.uk files and public labels dated 21 October 2026, and did not run a brush test. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Times that only Rustins prints stay on Rustins. If indoor and outdoor disagree on the listing, that argument is on the [buying guide](/hub/paints-and-varnishes/gold-lacquer/sub/gold-lacquer-buying-guide).

Before the tin is open

Clean, dry, and free of wax and grease. Metallic paint will not hide a thumbprint. On thirsty timber, sealing bare wood is the step Wrights of Lymm describe for Ardenbrite, not one of these ASINs. Borrow the seal. Do not borrow their glaze. Then stir. VGSEBA says deposits are normal and that you should mix before use. An unstirred top layer paints pale. Stir from the bottom until the colour looks even. Primer is not a ritual for every bottle. The Rustins label says it for bare metal: remove rust, and use a red oxide primer for the best result on that tin. Do not thin every bottle by 10%. Nothing here states that reduction. Do not copy 10°C, or the 105°C radiator limit, onto a jar that never printed them.

Thin coats, then stop brushing

Plan two or three light coats, and stop once the film starts to set. A soft brush, a light load and long strokes match the failure in the UK reviews. Rustins’ label says two coats are adequate and three add durability. ARTFLY, Rustins and Meuvcol reviews are where one coat looked transparent. Add a thin coat after the last has set. A heavy load drips on a vertical frame. One Sahara review saw that on a bedroom wall, and one Guild Lane review sanded drips from a first coat. A bottle with no recoat time does not get an invented hour. If a scrap smears, it is not ready. Wear on furniture is on the furniture page.

The only full clock in this set

Rustins is the only full written sequence here. Touch dry in about 30 minutes, recoat after 2 hours, a synthetic brush, water cleanup while wet, two coats adequate and three for durability. Not below 10°C, and not if rain is imminent. Use this clock only on GOLE250. The 105°C note, and not for oil-filled radiators, stays here too. Amazon prints Watercolour while the label says water-borne acrylic. Other times stay as printed. Guild Lane’s fields say 1 hour and a 24-hour cure. Nicpro’s 60 ml says 0.5 hours and a 2-hour cure. Sahara prints 0.5 hours and no full cure. Tamiya’s fields say 2 hours and an 8-hour cure. Meuvcol and Limino have no dry-time field. If it is empty, the value is n/a.

Spray, then stop

The aerosols here are Tamiya TS-21 and the Crowders / Premier 150 ml indoor lacquer. Spraying puts more coating in the air than a brush. Ventilate, and keep lids on tins you are not using. Crowders’ bullet says ventilated rooms. A shut bedroom is the wrong place. If you cannot move the work, brush a liquid from the set instead. Stop when the substrate is the problem. Real gilding on a listed interior, suspected lead paint, a solvent spray you cannot ventilate, and a stove or an oil-filled radiator are not a thicker coat of craft gold. A streaky first coat on a frame is not that moment. Stir, wait, and add a thin coat. If the jar said gold leaf, read gold leaf or gold paint first.

Common questions

Do I stir gold paint?
Yes. Metallic pigment settles, and the top of an unstirred jar paints pale. VGSEBA says deposits are normal and that you should mix before use. Stir from the bottom until the colour is even. Hard shaking that fills the jar with foam is a poor substitute. Stirring does not change the shade.
How many coats?
Plan two or three thin coats. Rustins says two are adequate and three add durability on that tin. One Sahara text covered MDF letters in a single coat. That is one text, not a rule. If the film is even, stop.
How do I avoid brush marks?
Use a soft synthetic brush, a light load and a long stroke, then leave the film. Overworking is the failure in these reviews: drips from a heavy coat, and streaks where the brush went back into paint that had started to tighten. On Rustins, the label asks for a synthetic brush. Sanding a drip is a repair, not a method.
Can I spray gold lacquer in a bedroom?
Not in a closed one. Tamiya TS-21 and the Crowders can are the sprays here, and spraying puts more coating in the air than a brush. Crowders says ventilated rooms. A window on the latch and a shut door is not that. Brush a liquid if you cannot move the work.
What temperature does Rustins allow?
Not below 10°C, and not if rain is imminent. Touch dry is about 30 minutes and recoat is after 2 hours, with water cleanup while wet. The same label says about 105°C and not for oil-filled radiators. Those numbers are GOLE250 only. If your jar prints none, test a scrap rather than borrowing 2 hours or 105°C.
When should I stop and get help?
Stop when the substrate is the risk: suspected lead paint, gilding on a listed interior, a stove, an oil-filled radiator, or solvent spray in a room you cannot ventilate. Bare metal on the Rustins label wants the rust off and a red oxide primer. If the title said leaf and you are about to buy size and sheets, read the leaf page first.
