Masonry paint vs floor paint

Updated: 23 October 2026

You have masonry paint left from the garden wall, and the patio or the utility floor looks like the same concrete. It is the same material and a different job. Masonry paint vs floor paint is the split that stops a wall film being rolled onto a slab. Vertical concrete gets masonry paint. Horizontal concrete that people walk on gets a floor paint or, on a step, a doorstep tin. The twelve rows are in the [concrete paint comparison](/hub/paints-and-varnishes/concrete-paint). Peter F. compared amazon.co.uk listings and public UK maker pages. This is not a wear test. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What masonry paint is for

Masonry paint in this set is a water-based film for exterior walls. Leyland Granocryl white, Sandtex Microseal black, and the HQC and Landlords colours are sold for brick, render, pebbledash, stone, or concrete used as a wall. The largest review file is Leyland's 2.5 litre tin at £15.17, 4.6 from 2,120 reviews. Those reviews talk about walls. They are not a sample of people driving onto the film. Leyland's 2.5 litre row marks waterproof as false and the level as water resistant. Use masonry paint on a concrete wall or pebbledash. It is the wrong film once feet or standing water become the load.

What floor paint is for

Only one ASIN here has the paint type floor paint. Ronseal Diamond Hard floor paint in slate, 750 ml, is £15.72 with 4.5 from 445 reviews. It is a water-based acrylic, not a two-pack epoxy. Amazon says indoor. Ronseal's page is tighter: interior concrete, stone, and wood, not power-floated, self-levelling, or tiled floors, with heavy traffic after 72 hours. A 750 ml tin covers about 3 square metres with three coats. Three square metres is a utility floor you can empty, not a double garage. Leave it if the project is a patio through a British winter or a slab a car will use. A car bay sits outside both films, which is why garage floor paint is separate.

Patio and the Leyland bullet

Leyland's 2.5 litre bullet includes the word patio. That sentence tempts a leftover wall tin onto the slabs. Dulux Decorator Centre's patio guidance says masonry paint wears where water sits. Emperor says masonry paint on a patio often peels within a year or two. That is their claim, not a test we ran on Leyland. This set has no dedicated patio coating, and the Ronseal floor tin stays indoors. If the slabs hold water, neither Leyland nor the 750 ml tin is a confident answer. The 10-year and 15-year lines are maker claims for a sound wall. They do not transfer to a floor.

Doorstep tins

A doorstep is horizontal, small, and wetter than a living-room wall. Ronseal sells it as its own tin: black 250 ml at £10.49, 4.2 from 1,121 reviews, and tile red 750 ml at £13.37, 4.5 from 1,040 reviews. Both name concrete. Ronseal's page asks for two coats, a dry day above 10°C, and a film fully hard in 24 hours. The Amazon rows say two hours. Wait for the longer time. Doorstep paint is not a miniature interior floor tin. The 250 ml pack lists 3 square metres. The 750 ml tile red is the pack with spare. A flight of steps is beyond either tin. The unreviewed DRW 250 ml is a different brand.

Common questions

Can masonry paint go on a concrete floor?
It can be brushed on, and it is still the wrong film. Masonry paint sheds rain on a wall. A floor adds feet, chair legs, and water that sits. Reviews in the masonry files here are about walls and coverage. Use the Ronseal floor tin for a small interior floor, or leave the floor until you have a coating specified for it.
The Leyland bullet says patio. Is that enough?
It shows that the listing mentions patio. It does not overturn decorator guidance that masonry paint wears on slabs. Dulux Decorator Centre points to a floor paint where water sits on paving. Leyland's 10-year claim is for the product used as directed, and this page does not treat a patio as that use. If people walk the slabs, choose a floor or doorstep system unless you accept early wear.
What is the only floor paint in this set?
Ronseal Diamond Hard floor paint, slate, 750 ml, at £15.72 and 4.5 from 445 reviews. Paint type is floor paint. Usage says indoor. The maker page excludes power-floated, self-levelling, and tiled floors and says heavy traffic after 72 hours. A 750 ml tin covers about 3 square metres with three coats. It is a small interior floor coating, not a garage paint.
Is doorstep paint just small floor paint?
No. Ronseal's doorstep page is two coats, walk-on in 4 to 6 hours, fully hard in 24 hours, and the slip additive is not guaranteed. The interior floor tin is a 72-hour product for indoor wood, concrete, and stone. The black doorstep tin is 250 ml and about £42 a litre. Use the doorstep tin on a step and the floor tin on a small indoor floor.
Will masonry paint be slippery on slabs?
This set does not publish a slip class for the masonry tins. A smooth wall paint on a wet patio can be slick, and non-slip on the Ronseal rows is not a BS 7976 or BS EN 16165 result either. If slip resistance is a specification, you need a tested floor finish. These listings do not provide one.
Can I use floor paint on an outside wall?
The Ronseal floor tin is specified for floors, and the maker page keeps it interior. A gable wants masonry paint. A 750 ml floor tin on pebbledash wastes the pack, and pebbledash drinks paint, so the coverage figure will not hold. The path at the foot of the wall is still the horizontal job.
