How to hang peel and stick wallpaper

Updated: 21 October 2026

The spare-room wall is smooth, the paint is dry, and the roll is already on the floor. A crooked first edge turns into bubbles and a seam that drifts. This is how to hang peel and stick wallpaper: clean a sound painted surface, mark a plumb line, peel the liner in stages, and smooth from the middle out. The rolls on the [self-adhesive wallpaper comparison](/hub/painting-supplies/self-adhesive-wallpaper) are a separate choice. Width and cover sit in the [buying guide](/hub/painting-supplies/self-adhesive-wallpaper/sub/self-adhesive-wallpaper-buying-guide). Peter F., editor for DIY & tools, checked these steps on 21 October 2026 against public UK guides, not a lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Prepare the wall

Wash the wall before you peel anything, because the film sticks to dust and grease as readily as to paint. Rinse a mild detergent off and leave the surface fully dry. British Home Interior’s October 2026 notes put a workable room at about 15 to 25°C as guidance, not a standard. LOVADA says wait two to four weeks after new paint and keep off chalking paint. White powder on a dry finger means stop. HAOKHOME says keep the film off texture and high humidity. Woodchip fails because the chips block a flat bond.

Hang the first drop

Start away from a corner that is out of true. Mark a plumb line with a spirit level or a weighted string, peel about a third of the liner, and set the top to that line before the rest sticks. Hovia’s UK guide uses that staged peel on longer mural panels, and it still fits a shorter drop. If the ceiling end is 5 mm off, later seams copy the fault. Stripping the whole liner lets the sheet fold onto itself. LOVADA says repeated lifting can damage fragile paint. Smooth from the middle outwards.

Seams, bubbles, and trimming

Butt the next panel to the first, and overlap only if that design’s note says so. If emulsion is on the adhesive, stop. To hang peel and stick wallpaper without bubbles, push trapped air to the nearest edge. Giffy Walls describe that stroke for their own film; it is a method, not a buying tip. A bubble about the size of a 10p that will not move may need a pin-prick, which marks the vinyl, so leave it until last. Check after about 24 hours.

When to stop

Stop if the paint powders or the sheet slides. Woodchip, heavy texture, and a steamy room with a weak extractor are the limits. Peel a failed sheet back at about 180 degrees, close to the wall. Do not steam the plaster: a North West Leicestershire Council letter says steam can soften a weak skim. Call a decorator if the drop will not stay plumb, the liner shreds, or paint is already on the adhesive.

Common questions

Do I need a plumb line?
Yes. A spirit level or a weighted string gives a true edge, and a door frame often will not. Grid lines on the liner help you cut a length, and they do not set the vertical. If the top of the drop is 5 mm off the line, later seams copy that lean. Mark the line before you peel, and set the first edge while only the top of the sheet is free.
How much liner do I peel at once?
About a third, from the top. Hovia’s UK guide peels in stages so you can set the edge before the rest of the adhesive grabs. Pull the whole backing off and the film can fold onto itself. Not every roll lifts for a second try, and LOVADA notes that repeated lifting can damage fragile paint. Keep the lower liner on until that section is smooth.
What if I get a bubble?
Push a small pocket to the nearest edge with a cloth or a felt smoother. If a corner is dusty, lift only that corner, wipe, let the wall dry, and press it back. A bubble about the size of a 10p that stays put may need a pin-prick, which marks the vinyl, so do that only after smoothing fails. A whole panel sliding off is the wall, the paint, or the adhesive.
Can I hang it on woodchip?
No. The chips keep the adhesive off a flat plane, so edges lift even when the middle looks stuck. British Home Interior treats woodchip as unsuitable, and HAOKHOME says to keep this film off texture and high humidity. Filling a hairline crack is a different job. A steamy bathroom with a weak extractor is a poor room for the same film, even on smooth plaster.
How soon can I hang it on new paint?
Wait two to four weeks, which is LOVADA’s cure time for a new coat. Emulsion can look dry and still come away with the adhesive. If your fingers pick up powder, do not hang the film, because strong adhesive can lift chalking paint. Filler has to be dry too. Looking again after 24 hours checks the drop. It does not cure the paint underneath.
What if the backing paper tears?
Ease the torn liner off in small pieces rather than yanking it. Some amazon.co.uk notes on Hode describe a split backing that leaves adhesive exposed, so the film folds onto itself. Peel the next length about a third at a time. If it keeps shredding and you cannot set a straight edge, stop. That roll is a poor choice for a first wall.
