Paintable wallpaper for ceilings

Updated: 21 October 2026

You are standing under a dry ceiling with a pasted length that already feels heavier than it did on the paste table. Paintable wallpaper for ceilings is that same paste-the-paper job, with a shorter run and a harder hold. This page is for small bumps on sound plaster. None of the seven amazon.co.uk listings prints ceiling as a room type, so a room label is not a ceiling trial. Hang timing stays on [how to hang paintable wallpaper](/hub/painting-supplies/paintable-wallpaper/sub/paintable-wallpaper-how-to-hang). A ceiling is the same paste, a harder hold

Anaglypta's Original sheet and the luxury vinyl sheet both say to hang across the shorter side when the ceiling is not square, with a guide line 50 cm in from the edge. Brush lightly so the relief is not crushed. Original allows a 15-minute soak. The luxury vinyl sheet allows 10 to 12 minutes. Those minutes are not on these seven Amazon pages. A ceiling of 3 m by 4 m means lengths a little over 3 m. The first length follows the 50 cm guide.

What these reviews say overhead

Sherwood's stored comments include a ceiling and a delicate ceiling job. Buckingham has one ceiling use. Argo's only ceiling line is a 2015 review that the paper was easy to paint. None of them gives a soak you can copy. Kinver's one review is a ceiling after Artex. The shopper pasted the paper and said remaining roughness was covered, though the ceiling was still called rough. Pure White has a note that the sheet was too thin unless the plaster was new. On an old ceiling, that line is a reason to pause. Wood slat has no ceiling review in the 35 stored texts. Sophie Laurence has none. The shelf ranking is on best paintable wallpaper.

Small bumps, not a plaster job

A light relief can soften a small bump once the length is stuck and painted. It will not fill a crack that moves. Press lightly. If you can still trace the line, emulsion colours it and leaves it visible. A thick plain liner is outside these seven rolls. That split is on Anaglypta or blown vinyl.

When to stop

Paper over a live damp patch traps moisture. If you cannot explain the stain, trace the leak before you paste. Polystyrene tiles are the wrong base. Paint that may pre-date 1960 should not be dry-sanded. At a ceiling rose, isolate the supply at the consumer unit. A dead socket does not show that the light is off. A stairwell you cannot hold needs someone else. None of these ASINs prints a Euroclass. On a dry ceiling you can hold, follow the 50 cm guide and take the soak from the insert.

Common questions

Can these paintable rolls go on a ceiling?
Yes, on a dry, sound ceiling, as a paste-the-paper job. Anaglypta's sheets use the shorter side when the ceiling is not square, and a guide line 50 cm from the edge. None of the seven amazon.co.uk listings prints ceiling as the room type. Leave the ceiling if it is damp, loose, or covered in polystyrene.
Which of the seven have a ceiling mention in the stored reviews?
Sherwood, Buckingham, Argo, Kinver and Pure White each have at least one ceiling comment. Buckingham has one use, Argo's is from 2015, and Kinver's follows Artex. Pure White has a use over old repairs and a line that the sheet was too thin unless newly plastered. Wood slat has none in 35 stored texts, and Sophie Laurence has none in the stored set.
How do you hold a length overhead?
When the ceiling is not square, cut the shorter way, so a 3 m by 4 m ceiling means lengths a little over 3 m. Mark the first guide 50 cm in from the edge and brush lightly. Support the paper with both hands. If you cannot hold the length and keep your footing, stop. Take the soak from the insert in the roll.
Will texture hide small bumps, or only after paint?
The texture can soften a small bump once the paper is stuck. Paint then colours that surface, and it will not fill a crack you can still trace. One Kinver note covered remaining roughness after Artex while the ceiling was still called rough. A hard roller flattens the pattern.
Is a thin review a reason to skip a ceiling?
It is a reason to skip that roll when the ceiling is not newly plastered and the review says so. Pure White carries both a use over bad repairs and a too-thin line unless the plaster was new. Neither line is a measured weight. On an old ceiling, look at another pattern in this set.
What about Artex, damp, or a light fitting?
One Kinver review is paste-the-paper after Artex, with roughness still showing, and that note does not clear every textured coating. Stop if the surface is loose or if you would dry-sand paint that may pre-date 1960. Cure damp before any paper goes up. At a ceiling rose, isolate at the consumer unit, because a dead socket does not prove the light is off.
Is lining paper the same job?
No. A relief roll and a lining grade are different products. A plain liner gives paint an even ground over cracks and lumps, while these seven rolls are textured sheets. If a lining was specified for this ceiling or an escape route, buy that lining. A 1200 grade liner is not a relief pattern that looks thick in a photograph.
