Decorators caulk vs silicone: painted trim or a bath

Updated: 21 October 2026

You are holding two white tubes, one for skirting and one that looks right for a bath. Decorators caulk vs silicone is a chemistry choice: decorator's caulk is the acrylic you paint on dry trim, and sanitary silicone is for a joint that stays wet. Paint the bead only if it will not sit in water. A bath, shower, or sink needs a colour-matched silicone you leave unpainted. Pack and gap for dry trim sit on the [decorators caulk comparison](/hub/painting-supplies/decorators-caulk). A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. None of those seven listings is a sanitary silicone.

The one difference that decides the tube

The split is paint against lasting water. Decorator's caulk is a water-based acrylic you can paint so the bead disappears. Silicone cures to a rubber for a wet joint, and it is not meant to take emulsion. Toolstation puts acrylic on skirting and architraves in dry rooms, and silicone on baths, showers, and sinks. Maker sheets quote movement around 7.5 to 12.5%: Sika's Caulk Once at 12.5%, SX premium at 7.5%. That covers a skirting board that shifts a little when the heating comes on. It is not a reason to run acrylic along a bath. If the joint will sit in water, choose sanitary silicone.

Where decorator's caulk belongs

Decorator's caulk belongs on wood-to-wall joints you will paint and that stay dry: skirting, an architrave, coving, a window board, and a small crack in sound plaster. Humidity in a bedroom is not a joint that stays wet. Sika excludes continuous immersion, and Bostik excludes constant water. Toolstation calls decorator's caulk moisture resistant and not for a bath or shower. How to cut, gun, and tool that bead is on how to apply decorators caulk. If the emulsion later splits, that failure is on paint cracking over caulk. Silicone on the skirting would only stop you painting the repair.

Where silicone belongs

Silicone belongs where water sits or runs: a bath rim, a shower joint, and the seal around a sink. Colour-match it, because you do not paint the bead. Emulsion on silicone skins, cracks, or peels. The amazon.co.uk listings in this comparison, captured on 19 October 2026, are decorator's acrylics. A browse label that says silicone caulk does not make them a sanitary sealant. A splashed worktop joint is the same wet case as a basin. A painted gap on a dry run of units, away from the sink, is closer to skirting. Paintable hybrids exist in trade ranges and are outside this shortlist.

What water resistant does not mean

Water resistant on an Amazon bullet is a listing phrase, not a sanitary class. Sanitary sealants fall under EN 15651-3. Decorator's caulk, when a sheet states a class, sits under EN 15651-1: F-INT for an interior joint, F-EXT-INT when exterior use is included. Do not attach either class to a listing that never prints it. In Great Britain, CE or UKCA marking is a route onto the market, not a shower approval. If the cartridge is one of the acrylics on the decorators caulk buying guide, keep it off the bath, the shower, and the sink. We did not run a lab test.

Common questions

Can you paint silicone to match the wall?
You should not paint standard silicone to match the wall. It is made as a flexible rubber for wet joints, and emulsion does not form a stable film on it. Colour-match the silicone to the bath, the tile, or the sink instead. Decorator's caulk is the paintable sealant, and it belongs on dry trim you will paint. A paintable hybrid from a trade range is a different product. It is not one of the acrylic listings in this comparison.
Is decorator's caulk waterproof enough for a bath?
No. Decorator's caulk is moisture resistant for dry rooms. It is not specified for a bath, a shower, or any joint in continuous water. Sika's Caulk Once sheet excludes continuous immersion, and Bostik excludes constant water. A bead that looks white and neat on the day you tool it still fails the job once the bath is used. Use a sanitary silicone and colour-match it. Leave that bead unpainted.
What does water resistant mean on an Amazon listing?
On these acrylic cartridges it means the sealant can handle indoor moisture, not that the tube is a sanitary sealant. The phrase is not EN 15651-3. A bullet that says water resistant is how decorator's caulk ends up on a bath rim. Read the maker limits beside it: no continuous immersion, no constant water, and no direct water such as a bath or shower. If the joint stays wet, put the acrylic back and buy a sanitary silicone you do not paint.
Which EN class should I look for?
For a bath, shower, or sink, look for a sanitary sealant under EN 15651-3. For painted interior trim, the façade class, when a sheet states one, is EN 15651-1 F-INT. Many amazon.co.uk pages do not print a class. CE or UKCA marking is not, by itself, a shower approval.
Can I caulk over old silicone?
No. Cut the old silicone back to a clean, dry edge, then choose again. Old silicone will not take the paint you want on skirting, and decorator's caulk will not turn that bead into a paintable trim joint. Use sanitary silicone again if the joint stays wet.
