Decorators caulk buying guide: joint, gap and pack

Updated: 21 October 2026

You have a skirting gap, a gun, and a row of white tubes that all say decorator's caulk. This decorators caulk buying guide is the order to decide in before you compare stars: the joint, the paint window, the gap, then the pack. The [decorators caulk comparison](/hub/painting-supplies/decorators-caulk) holds the amazon.co.uk prices and review counts for the seven listings in this set, captured on 19 October 2026. What you are buying

Decorator's caulk is a water-based acrylic for a gap you will paint: skirting against plaster, an architrave, coving, a window board, or a hairline in sound plaster. It is not a powder filler. Sika's Caulk Once sheet allows overpainting once the bead has skinned and excludes constant immersion. Bostik's SX sheet is the same family, at 7.5% movement against 12.5% for Caulk Once. None of these cartridges is a structural repair. EN 15651-1 class F-INT is a dry interior joint, not a bath. An Amazon bullet that never names a class has not shown you one. GOV.UK still allows a CE or UKCA mark. If the joint is already dry and painted, best decorators caulk says which listing to open first.

Gap, cure, and paint

Everyday trim gaps are a few millimetres. Two Soudal listings print a 10 mm maximum, and that figure is a width, not a deep void packed solid. A deep crack needs a backer. Makers also say not to sand cured acrylic. Skin is when the surface sets. The paint window is when you may overcoat. Through-cure is when the bead has finished moving. Sika says overpaint Caulk Once in 1 hour after a skin, with full cure in 3 to 5 days. The listing field of 15 minutes copies the tack bullet. Treat 15 minutes as tack. Bostik's rule of thumb is about 1 mm a day, and SX prints no skin time. If emulsion later splits, see paint cracking over caulk.

Cartridge, multipack, or kit

One room needs one white cartridge and a gun you trust. SX Siroflex 310 ml is £4.99. The Caulk Once twin is £5.38 for two 295 ml tubes, about £2.69 a tube if you use both. The Soudal white twin is £6.18. The twins are cheaper per millilitre only when the spare is not left until it is short-dated. Swiflee at £16.99 adds a steel gun and tools to two 290 ml tubes, and the UK reviews are about that gun snapping or bending. The ebuyergate box at £12.99 has two Soudal tubes and three reviews. If you already own a gun, buy the cartridge. Screwfix No Nonsense 310 ml is around £1.39 including VAT, and Toolstation Caulk Once is around £3.79 excluding VAT. Those shelves are trade context, not Amazon rows.

How the other listings split

The table holds the three white packs. The Soudal six-pack at £11.73 is clear in the colour field, and the browse rank sits under silicone caulk while the title still says acrylic. Buy it only when clear matches the photo. Red Devil 0770 is one 10.1 fl oz US acrylic latex tube at £11.95, and the stored texts are American. A details field says Rubber. The kits are guns plus cartridges. These figures are the amazon.co.uk listings saved on 19 October 2026. We did not run a lab test.

Common questions

White or clear?
White is the decorating default, because emulsion and woodwork paint cover it and a thin white bead disappears at a skirting line. Clear is for a joint you want to stay translucent, such as some stained trim. The Soudal six-pack's colour field says clear even when the title does not shout it. Check the photo before you order six tubes for a white room.
How wide a gap is sensible?
A few millimetres is the everyday skirting gap. Soudal's listings here state 10 mm as a maximum fill, and that is a width. Bostik's guidance matches depth to width up to about that size and changes the build once the joint is wider. A deep hole needs a backer, then a finish bead. Packing the void solid is how a painted line splits later.
Why does one listing say full cure in 15 minutes?
On the Caulk Once twin the bullet says tack in about 15 minutes and overpainting in 1 hour. The separate full-cure field repeats 15 minutes. Sika's sheet says full cure in 3 to 5 days. Use the sheet for the through-cure and the bullet for the paint window. The Soudal twin's 2E+1 minutes field is the same kind of listing error, not a cure you can trust.
Is a 10.1 oz US tube the same as a 310 ml cartridge?
The volume is close. Red Devil's listing is about 299 ml against a UK 310 ml tube. The buy is not the same. The stored reviews on that amazon.co.uk ASIN are from the United States, the price is £11.95 for one tube, and a details field says Rubber while the title says acrylic latex. A named UK acrylic with UK review texts is the closer match for a British room.
One tube or a twin pack?
Buy one tube for a single room if you will not open a second cartridge this season. SX at £4.99 is that shape, though some buyers received it without a nozzle. Buy a twin when the spare will be used. The Caulk Once twin at £5.38 is about £2.69 a cartridge only if both tubes get used.
