Paint cracking over caulk on skirting and architrave

Updated: 21 October 2026

You rolled emulsion up to the skirting last night, and this morning a pale crack follows the bead. Paint cracking over caulk usually means the film set while the bead was still shrinking, or a brittle matt could not flex when the joint moved a little. This page says what a one-hour paint claim allows, and when the crack is the wall moving rather than a tired tube. Prices stay on the [decorators caulk comparison](/hub/painting-supplies/decorators-caulk). The first check is whether that bead had only skinned. Why the paint splits

Emulsion cracks along a skirting bead when the film goes rigid while the acrylic is still losing water. On the Sika Caulk Once sheet, paint is allowed after about an hour once the bead has skinned, and full cure is still three to five days. Bostik puts through-cure at about 1 mm per 24 hours. A brittle vinyl matt can crack if the joint moves. A contract matt has very little give once it has dried. Sika quotes shrinkage under 25% to ISO 10563, a laboratory ceiling, not a forecast for one hallway. Decorators on the Decorators Forum UK use a rule-of-thumb 4 to 15% while a bead dries. That range is trade experience. Choosing a fresh tube belongs on the best decorators caulk page.

Thickness, suction, and cold

A thin bead fails less often than a fat one, because less material is left to shrink. Homebuilding's practical advice is a thin bead and at least 24 hours before paint. On a joint about 2 mm deep, that day lines up with about 1 mm per day. On a 6 mm blob, the same day only skins the outside. Bare new plaster drinks water out of the bead, so it skins fast and shrinks unevenly. Mist-coat or prime first. Decorators on the forum flag surfaces below about 7°C. That figure is trade experience, not a pass mark on every tube. The decorators caulk buying guide sets the one-hour claim against gap size.

What to paint with

A flexible trim paint rides a small movement better than a brittle vinyl matt. Sika's sheet says poor vinyl matt films can crack if movement is excessive. Painting the woodwork across the bead, so the trim paint covers the caulk before emulsion meets it, is the sequence decorators on the forum describe. It will struggle if the gap opens by several millimetres. An oil-based or barrier primer, then emulsion, is an option Homebuilding and that forum mention. You can skip it when a flexible trim paint already bridges the bead. A Soudal family note says the paint needs to be elastic enough. That note is not a test of these amazon.co.uk listings. Leave the bead through its cure window before you roll the wall colour up to the line.

If it has already cracked

A second, very thin skim is enough when the crack is a hairline, the bead is still stuck to both sides, and the joint is only a couple of millimetres wide. If the old bead has pulled away or shrunk into a valley, cut that stretch out. A skim over a hollow bead cracks in the same place. Leave cured caulk unsanded. Sika's guidance is to avoid abrading it. You can take down raised paint edges, not the sealant. The cut, the gun, and the wait are on how to apply decorators caulk. If the plaster or the timber keeps opening, another tube will not hold it.

Common questions

Is 24 hours enough before painting caulk?
Twenty-four hours is Homebuilding's practical minimum, and it can be enough for a thin bead of about 2 mm, in line with Bostik's through-cure of roughly 1 mm per day. A 6 mm bead may only have skinned in that time. Sika Caulk Once still lists full cure at three to five days even where paint is allowed after an hour.
Does a one-hour caulk stop cracking?
A one-hour claim means you may paint once the bead has skinned. The skin can take paint while a thick bead is still shrinking under a brittle matt. Sika Caulk Once allows paint after about an hour and lists full cure at three to five days. Wider joints raise the cracking risk, which is Bostik's point, because the centre cures more slowly than the skin.
Should you use gloss or emulsion on the bead?
Gloss or another flexible trim paint is the better film on the bead, compared with stopping a vinyl matt exactly on the joint. Decorators on the forum paint the woodwork across the caulk before emulsion meets it. An oil-based or barrier primer, then emulsion, is an option from Homebuilding and that forum thread if the topcoat has to be matt. The primer adds a coat and a wait.
Can you sand the cracked paint and the caulk?
Take down raised paint beside the crack if you need a flat edge, and keep the abrasive off the cured caulk. Sika's guidance is to avoid abrading the caulk itself. Cutting out a failed bead is cleaner than grinding it. A light pass on paint edges is a different job from sanding the sealant back to the plaster.
What if the crack in the wall keeps opening?
A crack that keeps growing after a thin, cured bead and a flexible paint film is movement in the timber or the plaster. Another cartridge opens in the same place. Seasonal skirting movement, a loose board, or a crack running into the wall is a job for a decorator or a builder. Paint cracking over caulk is the symptom in that case.
