Paint sprayer or roller for walls: one-room choice

One room of emulsion is a roller and brush job. A paint sprayer earns its place only after you mask, and a hobby airbrush still cannot cover a bedroom wall.

The bedroom is empty enough to start, the emulsion is on the dust sheet, and two tools are competing for the job. One is a roller and a brush. The other is a small airbrush kit that turned up beside the decorating gear. Paint sprayer or roller for walls is the choice that finishes the room. The airbrush is a third machine, and it is the wrong class.

A roller and a cutting-in brush will cover a normal room of emulsion. A purpose-made sprayer earns its place when the area is large and you will mask everything else.

We used Homebuilding, PaintTech Training Academy, Property Workshop, Wagner UK's SprayRoller note, and the Health and Safety Executive page on construction isocyanates. Figures are from amazon.co.uk listings read in October 2026. This is not a lab test. A qualifying purchase through our amazon.co.uk links can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

In short

For one room of emulsion, paint with a roller and cut in with a brush. Choose a paint sprayer when the area is large, you already have other spray work, and you will mask and ventilate. A hobby airbrush cannot cover a bedroom wall: the cups on these kits are about 7 ml, a craft load, not a wall load.

Three different tools

A roller lays emulsion from a sleeve onto the open wall. A brush does the edge the sleeve misses: the ceiling line, the corners, the skirting and the frames. Homebuilding's split is a brush for woodwork, a roller for walls and ceilings, and a sprayer when the object suits a sprayed finish, such as cabinets, doors and fences.

A paint sprayer is several machines under one shopping word. PaintTech Training Academy puts airless kit on open surfaces and HVLP on smaller, finer work. HVLP for interior walls means a door, a cupboard or a piece of joinery. It is a weak plan for a whole room of emulsion. Airless is the class that meets wall paint in trade kit. Wagner UK's SprayRoller is a contractor airless accessory for emulsion.

A hobby airbrush is a small gun for models, nails, makeup or cake colour. In the listings behind our airbrush comparison, a Rosemary gravity cup is 7 cc and Timbertech's tank figure is 7 ml. A figure of 7 ml beside the word tank is still the cup, not a 3 litre receiver and not a hopper of emulsion.

Roller and brush for one room

If the job is one room, Property Workshop puts rollers on walls and ceilings, and says to buy a sprayer for that single room only when you already have other work for it. Masking is the cost people leave out when they picture the sprayer winning on time.

Cut in with a brush even when you roll the field. A 9 inch sleeve will not hold a straight line at the ceiling, and it will load the top of the skirting. Brush those junctions first, then roll while the edge can still blend. Homebuilding's pile note matches the plaster: a short pile on a smooth wall, a longer pile on texture. A texture sleeve will stipple a smooth wall.

Sound existing emulsion can take another coat. Property Workshop says paint over it when it is sound, and strip only where it is loose or flaky. Flakes that might be old lead paint are a reason to leave sanding and heat alone. A ceiling in the same room stays on the roller, because paint that misses a sprayed ceiling lands on the floor.

The Hamilton seven-piece on our paint roller comparison is the top pick in the October 2026 amazon.co.uk snapshot: five 9 inch medium-pile sleeves, a cage frame and a tray, at £9.93, with a 1.75 inch core in the title and 4.7 from 873 reviews. The listing does not name a paint type, and there is no 4 inch sleeve.

When a sprayer earns the masking

A sprayer earns the masking when the area is large enough that the cover-up is a fraction of the job, and when you will actually mask. PaintTech says spraying is faster on large areas and ceilings. That is the academy's claim, not a time we measured. One bedroom stays a roller job unless you already own the machine and have more spray work in the same week.

An airless sprayer or a roller for emulsion depends on how much surface you can leave exposed. Airless kit moves paint onto open plaster or a long ceiling. Emulsion spraying indoors fails in the preparation. Floors, sockets, switches, door furniture and soft furnishings take the mist. A dust sheet under a roller catches drips. It does not catch a cloud. If the room stays furnished and you will not mask it, roll.

Thin emulsion only when the tin and the sprayer manual both say so. This page gives no percentage. Homebuilding notes that not every paint thins for spraying, and forum talk of about 10 percent is anecdote. If the manual and the tin conflict, stop. A cordless paint spray gun is the wall-gun shelf, separate from a cordless airbrush. Read the hopper against a litre of emulsion. A battery does not cancel the masking.

Why a hobby airbrush stays off the wall

The cup answers the wall question. Seven millilitres is 7 cc. One litre is 1,000 millilitres, so one litre is about 140 refills of a 7 ml cup. That is arithmetic on the listing, not a coverage test, and a bedroom often needs more than a litre.

A cordless airbrush changes how you carry the gun. It leaves the cup, the needle and the paint unchanged. Wall emulsion is thicker than the thinned acrylic a small nozzle expects, and this page will not invent a thinning ratio to force it through. Craft acrylic belongs on the airbrush set comparison. The bedroom tin belongs with the roller. A small stencil can still suit the cup. Across plaster, you need the sleeve.

Overspray and what to leave alone

The Health and Safety Executive treats spraying coatings as a higher-exposure task than brushing. A brush and a roller put paint on the wall. A spray gun puts a share of it in the room. For ordinary water-based emulsion, a house can offer masking, a cleared room, and ventilation as the tin describes. An open window is fresh air. It is not a spray booth, and it does not make a two-pack coating safe.

Leave two-pack isocyanate coatings off a hobby gun and off a casual weekend sprayer. This article will not tell you how to spray them at home. The same stop covers old lead paint that is flaking, or that you would sand or heat. An airbrush does not remove lead paint.

When you do have a real wall machine and a large job, mask socket faces, the top of the door, radiator valves and the floor at the skirting, and leave the covers on until the mist has settled. If you are unsure about lead, keep the new colour on a roller over paint that is still attached.

Which comparison to open

If you are painting a room with a roller, the paint roller comparison is the next read: pile, core size, and whether a tray is in the box. Skip the Hamilton set when you need a 4 inch sleeve in the same box, or when the texture wants a longer pile than medium.

If the area is large and you have accepted the masking, the airless paint sprayer comparison is the class Wagner's emulsion accessory points at. The top pick there is the Wagner Control Pro 250 M, about £475, with 4.3 from 415 amazon.co.uk ratings. The title and the pressure cell both say 110 bar, the hose is 9 m, and the box includes tips 311 and 517. It suits empty rooms, ceilings and fences when you will mask and learn the prime sequence. A furnished room is the weaker fit, as is expecting contractor pressure from 110 bar.

Use the cordless paint spray gun comparison when the listing is a battery wall gun. Use the airbrush set comparison for a model, a nail, makeup or cake colour. Those pages hold the rows and the prices. This article only chooses the page.

Common questions

Should I buy a paint sprayer or a roller for walls?
For one room of emulsion, buy the roller and a brush to cut in. Homebuilding puts a brush on skirting, frames and doors, a roller on walls and ceilings, and a sprayer on objects that suit a sprayed finish, such as cabinets, doors or a fence. Property Workshop says to skip a sprayer for a single room unless you already have other work for it. Masking is what wipes out a speed claim on a small job.
Can an airbrush kit paint a bedroom wall?
A hobby airbrush kit stays on craft work: models, nails, makeup or cake colour. A Rosemary gravity cup is 7 cc, and Timbertech's tank line is 7 ml, not a 3 litre receiver. Wall emulsion is sold by the litre. About 140 refills of a 7 ml cup would empty one litre, and that sum is arithmetic on the cup, not a finished wall.
Is a cordless airbrush the same as a cordless emulsion sprayer?
A shared battery does not make them the same tool. A cordless airbrush is still a craft gun with a cup of a few millilitres. A cordless paint sprayer sold for walls still needs paint the tin allows you to spray, plus masking and ventilation. Read the cup size and the job the listing names. Models or nails mean the craft side. The cordless paint spray gun comparison is the wall side.
Do I have to thin emulsion, and by how much?
Follow the tin and the sprayer manual. This page does not give you a percentage. Homebuilding notes that not every paint is meant to be thinned for spraying. Some forum posts say about 10 percent, and that figure is anecdote, not a method we measured. If the tin says use the emulsion as it comes, roll it that way. If the manual and the tin disagree, stop.
Is spraying faster once masking is included?
PaintTech Training Academy says spraying is faster on large areas and ceilings. Those are the academy's figures, not a room we timed. On one room, Property Workshop's point holds: you mask everything, or the sprayer was the wrong purchase. Covering floors and bagging fittings sit on the clock. A roller on an open wall skips most of that cover-up.
Should I roll or spray a ceiling?
A ceiling in one room is a roller job for most people, with a brush along the edges. Homebuilding and Property Workshop both put rollers on ceilings. PaintTech treats a ceiling as quicker to spray only after the room below is masked, because what misses the ceiling lands on the floor. If you will not mask, roll.
Can I spray ordinary emulsion in a furnished room?
Spray ordinary emulsion indoors only after you have covered or removed what you want to keep. The mist lands on floors, switches, sockets and soft furnishings. A furnished room that stays furnished is a roller room. Ventilate as the tin asks. That is fresh air for a water-based emulsion, not a spray booth. Two-pack coatings do not belong on a hobby gun at home.
When is two-pack or old lead paint no longer a DIY spray job?
Stop when the coating is a two-pack isocyanate, or when old paint may contain lead and you would sand, heat or flake it. The Health and Safety Executive treats spraying as a higher-exposure task than brushing. A hobby airbrush is not a booth, and it does not remove lead paint. Sound emulsion that is not flaking can stay and be rolled over.
