Airbrush compressor UK plug: pins before decibels

MaintenanceOctober 20267 min read
A mini airbrush compressor lead with a three-pin plug on a hobby bench

A 220 V or 240 V line is not a BS 1363 plug. Check the pins on the lead, fit a fused conversion plug if needed, and treat printed decibel claims as unmeasured.

You have the box open on the kitchen table. The motor plate says 220 V, the title said quiet, and the plug in the bag has two round pins that will not sit in the socket by the kettle. An airbrush compressor UK plug is the check that comes before any argument about decibels. UK mains are 230 V. A printed 220 V or 240 V only says the motor's voltage range. It does not prove a BS 1363 three-pin plug.

Those decibel lines were not measured here. Figures come from regulation 35, the GOV.UK scope note, the Health and Safety Executive noise page, Airbrushes.com, Everything Airbrush, and the twelve amazon.co.uk listings in our airbrush set comparison, snapshot 15 October 2026. We did not meter a compressor or fit plugs. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Prices such as £69.99 are that snapshot.

In short

A voltage figure is not a plug. Regulation 35 wants a BS 1363 plug, or a conversion plug with a BS 1362 fuse, when the lead is meant for a UK domestic socket. Printed decibels, including 12 dB and 39 dB, were not measured here, and the workplace figures of 80 dB(A) and 85 dB(A) are not a pass mark for a hobby listing.

Voltage on the label is not the plug

UK mains are nominally 230 V. Listings still print 220 V, 240 V, or 220–240 V at 50 Hz. The band can be true of the motor. The pins are a separate fact. BS 1363 is the rectangular three-pin plug with a fuse that a British domestic socket takes. Two round pins are a Euro plug.

Airbrushes.com prints 220–240 V 50 Hz for the Sparmax TC-610H Plus, without the plug shape in that spec block. Everything Airbrush prints 240 V 50 Hz for the Royal Max TC-80T and tells European customers to use a UK-to-EU adaptor. In Britain you need the UK plug on the lead. None of the twelve comparison files states a BS 1363 plug. MEEDEN prints 240 V. Timbertech and CHAMSUREUK print 220 V. One Timbertech review reports a Euro two-pin plug, which is not every box. A title that says UK is not a photograph of the pins.

What regulation 35 asks for

Regulation 35 of the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 is the Great Britain text used here. Where a lead is meant for a UK domestic socket, it asks for a BS 1363 plug, or a conversion plug fitted with a BS 1362 fuse. GOV.UK puts the scope at 50 to 1,000 volts AC and 75 to 1,500 volts DC. A 230 V motor does not, on its own, answer an airbrush compressor UK plug question. A loose travel adaptor is not that conversion plug. If the two-pin plug is intact and only the shape is wrong, fit the fused conversion plug. If the pins are bent, the body is cracked, or the sheath is cut, take the lead off the wall. Do not run the motor from a bathroom shaver adaptor.

Powate is 12 V DC, so the bare gun can sit under the 75 V DC line, and the mains adapter cannot. Check that adapter's plug. CHAMSUREUK prints 220 V and also says battery powered, so treat a charger in the box as a plug. Northern Ireland uses the same domestic plug. A socket in the Republic of Ireland is a different check.

Kits that plug in, and kits that do not

The snapshot mixes corded kits, cordless guns, and one gun with no compressor. Timbertech ABPST05, B00LO4PKY2, was £69.99 with 4.5 from 6,320 reviews. The bullets name a compressor, a gauge, a water trap, and 4 bar with autostart at 3 bar. The spec tank is 7 ml. It is the top pick because those lines can be read and the review file is large. The score already allows for a Euro two-pin report, so look at the pins before you treat the plug as settled.

MEEDEN MD-AC300H, B09K3NGGHT, was £74.95 with 4.4 from 124 reviews, at 240 V and 21 psi, with a single 0.5 mm needle. Eight pounds in a bullet does not match 2 kg in the spec, and the plug shape is unstated. Powate TA101, B0HC6SNXH8, was £52.99 with 4.5 from 103 reviews. It is the best value because the included line names the compressor and an oil-water separator, at a lower price than Timbertech. It is 12 V DC, the spec pressure is 12 with no unit, and one review doubts the 40 PSI bullet, so photograph the adapter.

Roizefar, B0G8JZXNGH, was £55.99, with 230 and no unit beside 55 PSI. SHJKBST, B0G1Y6YJLF, was £39.99, with a 12 V adapter and a components line that says air hose only. Rosemary and Co, B09J8HW2MY, was £22.65 and excludes the hose and compressor. The airbrush set buying guide is that contents check. Ykall, B0GR98M599, was £28.49, and a review says the compressor did not arrive. Cordless guns have no mains plug on the gun: black BURNTOP £19.94 (B0G584MYR7), green BURNTOP £20.99 (B0DRBZK69M), Aloxina £20.99 (B0H14DNFCK), Liwankaqi £22.99 (B0FQ9PDL6C), and Ykall. CHAMSUREUK, B0HCTCPF9V, was £27.99 with 4.7 from eight reviews, and 220 V sits beside the battery claim. Aloxina lists a USB cable, so check the wall adaptor you already own. Lead versus battery is on the corded or cordless airbrush set page. We did not open the boxes, and a later lead can change under the same ASIN.

Printed decibels and what was not measured

This page will not rank the kits from quiet to loud. Powate prints 39 dB, MEEDEN prints 12 dB, and CHAMSUREUK prints 47 dB. None of those figures was measured here. Everything Airbrush prints 47 dB for the TC-80T, with a 3.0 litre receiver, a 1/8 BSP outlet and a weight of 5.2 kg. Airbrushes.com prints 53 decibels for the Sparmax TC-610H Plus: a 2.5 litre tank, 1/8 BSP outlets, 60 minutes on then 20 minutes rest, at £359 including VAT.

An Iwata chart on that site runs from TBA and about 50 dB up to 66–72 dB, often on a 1/4 BSP outlet rather than the 1/8 BSP hobby thread. Timbertech's 7 ml spec tank will not let the motor rest the way a 2.5 or 3 litre receiver can. MEEDEN's 12 dB line sits beside a weight clash, 8 pounds against 2 kg, so that noise cell is unchecked seller's text. A search for a quiet airbrush compressor UK meets that text, not a measured distance. About £53 to £75 here is not £359.

Workplace noise figures are not a product test

The Health and Safety Executive sets a lower exposure action value of 80 dB(A) and an upper value of 85 dB(A) for employers. Those figures trigger workplace duties. They are not a pass mark for a hobby compressor, and a printed 39 dB does not put any kit under a legal limit. A figure with no distance cannot be subtracted from 80 and called a margin. If you hear the compressor through a closed door, the flat has already answered. We did not run a noise assessment.

A quiet motor does not make two-pack paint, or old lead paint, into a spare-room job. Those limits are the coating and the lack of a booth.

When to stop using the compressor

Stop if the plug is scorched, the plastic smells hot, the sheath is split, or the pins move. Unplug it and photograph the damage. Do not tape the lead or hide it in a travel adaptor. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives a 30-day right to reject faulty goods. An intact two-pin plug is shape, not damage, so use a conversion plug with a BS 1362 fuse. Stop if you cannot see a fuse. The listings state no amp rating, so this page will not invent one.

Stop if the motor runs for the whole session. A 7 ml tank will not follow the Sparmax rest cycle or behave like a 3 litre TC-80T. If the case is too hot to hold, or the gauge will not settle, switch off. Prefer a photograph of a BS 1363 plug, or budget for a fused conversion plug. A specialist receiver is litres, at a price such as £359, not the £69.99 Timbertech. Neither shelf was metered here.

Common questions

Will an airbrush compressor from Amazon have a UK three-pin plug?
None of the twelve amazon.co.uk listings in the airbrush set comparison states a BS 1363 plug. A cell that says 220 V or 240 V only describes a voltage range. UK mains are 230 V, which can sit inside that range, and the pins are still a separate fact. One Timbertech ABPST05 review reports a Euro two-pin plug. That is one report, not every box. Look for a photograph of the plug, then look at the plug in the parcel.
Is 220 V the same as a BS 1363 plug?
No. 220 V, 230 V and 240 V are voltage figures. BS 1363 is the plug. Regulation 35 of the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016, the Great Britain text, asks for a BS 1363 plug or a conversion plug with a BS 1362 fuse when the lead is meant for a UK domestic socket. A 220–240 V label can be right about the motor and still arrive with two round pins. The Sparmax page prints that voltage and does not show the plug shape in the spec block we used.
Can I use a European two-pin plug with a shaver adaptor?
A bathroom shaver adaptor, or a loose travel adaptor, is not the conversion plug the regulation describes. Use a conversion plug fitted with a BS 1362 fuse. A shaver socket is for a shaver, and it does not turn two round pins into a checked BS 1363 fit. If the lead is damaged, or the adaptor rocks in the wall, stop. Fit a fused conversion plug only when the two-pin lead itself is intact. A damaged lead is a reason to reject the goods, not a job for an adaptor.
How loud is a mini compressor in a flat?
We did not measure one in a room, so this page will not give a decibel figure for your flat. Specialist pages print 47 dB for the Royal Max TC-80T and 53 dB for the Sparmax TC-610H Plus. An Iwata chart runs from about 50 dB up to 66–72 dB, and some lines are TBA. Those are seller figures, as are amazon.co.uk lines of 12 dB, 39 dB or 47 dB. A 2.5 or 3 litre receiver can rest between charges. A 7 ml spec tank is not that machine.
Is a listing that says 12 dB or 39 dB actually that quiet?
The MEEDEN file prints 12 dB. Powate prints 39 dB. CHAMSUREUK prints 47 dB. None of those figures was measured here, so we do not rank the kits. MEEDEN also disagrees on weight, 8 pounds in a bullet and 2 kg in the spec, which is a reason to treat the noise cell as unverified. Specialist pages print 47 dB and 53 dB too. Quiet on the page is a claim, not a test in your spare room, and it does not skip the plug check.
Do the 80 dB and 85 dB workplace figures apply to my spare room?
The Health and Safety Executive sets a lower exposure action value of 80 dB(A) and an upper value of 85 dB(A) for employers. Those trigger workplace duties. They are not a pass mark for a hobby listing, and a printed 39 dB does not put a compressor under a legal limit. A spare room is not that assessment. If the noise is too much for the flat, shorter sessions or a different air supply are the practical answers. Do not subtract a seller's decibel line from 80.
Does a cordless airbrush avoid the plug question?
It avoids a mains plug on the gun. In this snapshot BURNTOP, Aloxina, Liwankaqi, Ykall, and CHAMSUREUK if it is the battery version, have no mains lead on the gun. A charger still plugs into the wall when the box includes one. CHAMSUREUK also prints 220 V beside a battery claim, so read the spec block. A USB cable can mean you are using a wall adaptor you already own. Check that adaptor. Cordless does not make a two-pin charger acceptable.
What if the plug arrives scorched or the lead is damaged?
Stop using it. Do not tape the lead, file the pins, or hide the plug in a travel adaptor. A scorched plug or a damaged lead is a fault. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives you a 30-day right to reject faulty goods. Photograph the plug and the lead, and tell the seller. A conversion plug with a BS 1362 fuse is for an intact two-pin lead that is the wrong shape. It is not a repair for burnt plastic or a split cable.
