How to use an airless paint sprayer

Updated: October 2026

Learning how to use an airless paint sprayer is mainly about controlling the sequence: prepare the coating, prime until paint reaches the gun, test the fan, then flush the system before residue dries. The pump should not meet your wall for the first time. Use cardboard or masking paper to set the pattern, and keep the manufacturer’s manual beside you because valve controls differ. If you have not yet chosen a machine, begin with our [airless paint sprayer comparison](/hub/painting-supplies/airless-paint-sprayer). The steps below cover a typical corded pump rather than replacing a model-specific manual. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Before the first trigger

Read the tin and the manual together. Confirm the material is permitted, choose a supported tip and strain if instructed. A “no pre-thinning” line does not override the paint maker. Cover floors, windows, sockets and lights before you open the paint. HSE says airless mist travels less far than compressed-air spray, and it still leaves the target. Keep the tip guard fitted, and use RCD protection where the manufacturer requires it.

Prime so the hose is full of paint

Set the machine to PRIME and wait until paint displaces air or cleaning water. Keep the intake submerged. A shallow container can make a working pump draw air and look unable to prime. Fill the hose without spraying leftover flush water onto the wall. Trigger into a waste container before you change to spray, in the manual’s valve order. Once an even stream arrives, lock the gun and test the fan on card, starting below maximum pressure. The airless paint sprayer buying guide explains why a larger tip can exceed the pump’s flow rather than cure a poor pattern.

Distance, overlap and a clogged tip

Hold the gun square to the surface. Move before you pull the trigger and release it before you stop. Overlap so the edge of one fan is covered by the next. Use the distance in your manual, not one universal number. Fingers in the test fan can mean low pressure, the wrong viscosity, a blocked tip, or a tip the pump cannot feed. Do not jump to a larger orifice. For a reversible tip, lock the trigger, relieve pressure as the manual says, rotate the tip and clear it into a waste area. For indoor setup, see an airless paint sprayer for walls and ceilings.

Flush the same day

Flush the same day, before coating skins in the hose, gun or filter. Relieve pressure and remove the tip only in the manual’s order. Wagner’s UK cleaning guidance uses water with a little washing-up liquid for water-based paint. Solvent-based coatings need their stated cleaner. Run PRIME until the return runs clear, then SPRAY into a waste container until the gun runs clear. Do not tip washings into a surface-water drain. InoKraft advertises about ten minutes with Flush-Ease. Wagner users here describe about 20 minutes once learned.

When a stop is not a technique problem

A stop after several minutes may be overheat, lost prime, a blocked filter or a fault. The MaXpray M1 listing says thermal protection can stop the unit and that you wait about three minutes. Some UK reviews describe machines that never restarted. Do not keep cycling a hot pump. If it will not prime, check paint above the intake, the tube positions and the valve setting. Wagner’s guidance says a stuck inlet ball can stop flow in PRIME. That is one diagnosis. Never search for a high-pressure leak with your hand. Suspected injection is a surgical emergency. A damaged hose, a pump that will not hold pressure, or an isocyanate coating is the point to hand the work over. When home spraying needs a professional is that line.

Common questions

In what order should I prime the sprayer?
Put the intake and return tubes where the manual specifies, select PRIME and wait until paint replaces air or cleaning fluid. Then use the manufacturer’s sequence to fill the hose and discharge remaining water into a waste container. Test on cardboard before moving to the wall.
How far should the gun be from the wall?
Use the distance stated for your coating, tip and machine, and hold the gun square to the surface. Wagner’s emulsion guide gives roughly 10–25 cm, but other systems differ. A consistent distance and straight pass matter more than adopting one universal number.
What causes tails in the spray fan?
Tails can come from pressure that is too low, coating outside the permitted viscosity, a dirty or worn tip, or a tip the pump cannot feed. Test the simplest permitted corrections in the manual. Do not assume maximum pressure or a larger tip is always the answer.
How do I clear a reversible-tip clog?
Lock the trigger and complete the model’s pressure-relief procedure. Rotate the tip to the clearing position, point into an approved waste area and briefly trigger as instructed. Lock it again before returning the tip to spray. Never put fingers near the opening.
Is a stop after 15 minutes just overheating?
Not necessarily. InoKraft states that thermal protection may clear after about three minutes, but reviews also describe permanent stops. Let the machine cool according to its instructions, check permitted causes and stop using it if it will not restart normally or shows an electrical fault.
What should I use to flush emulsion?
For water-based emulsion, use the water-based cleaning sequence and any additive stated by the manufacturer. Wagner advises water with a little washing-up liquid in its general guide. Clean filters and the tip separately as directed. Never assume water is suitable for a solvent-based coating.
What if paint is injected through the skin?
Treat it as an emergency even if the mark is small. Stop work, obtain urgent medical care and provide the coating’s safety information. High-pressure injection can damage deep tissue and requires specialist assessment; it is not an ordinary cut to monitor at home.
