Airless paint sprayer for walls and ceilings

Updated: October 2026

An airless paint sprayer for walls and ceilings can cover broad areas quickly, but only after the room is empty enough to protect properly. The practical decision is whether the pump can feed the coating and tip, whether you can reach safely, and whether masking still leaves a time advantage. Our [airless paint sprayer comparison](/hub/painting-supplies/airless-paint-sprayer) ranks ten amazon.co.uk pumps. This guide focuses on indoor emulsion, where overspray and ceiling access often matter more than a headline pressure. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Empty room or furnished room

An empty room is the natural airless job: cover the floor, windows, doors and sockets, then work in uninterrupted passes. In a furnished room, mist settles beyond the visible fan. Moving a sofa and throwing one sheet over it is not the same as emptying the room. Mask before you prime, and protect the whole floor. HSE notes that airless mist travels less far than compressed-air spray; less far does not mean none. If the room cannot be cleared, roll it. One Control Pro 250 M buyer sent the machine back because a roller was easier indoors. The airless sprayer versus roller guide counts preparation, not surface time alone.

Emulsion, the tin and a 515 or 517 tip

Spray wall emulsion only when the tin and the machine both permit it. A “no pre-thinning” bullet is not a universal instruction. Check the tin’s tip range and strain where instructed. A 517 asks the pump for more flow than a 515. Farrow & Ball lists a 517 for Estate Emulsion; that is for that coating, not every wall paint. The 250 M includes 311 and 517. Graco states 0.9 L/min and a 12 litre cap. The M1 states 1.17 L/min and a 30 cm extension. The airless paint sprayer buying guide shows how flow, pressure and tip constrain one another.

Hose and the pole in the box

For one room, Graco’s 7.5 m hose or the roughly 7.6 m hoses on the M1 and WORKPRO may be enough if the route stays clear. The Control Pro 250 M lists 9 m. Keep spare hose off ladders and wet paint. A pole is separate from the hose. The M1, NEO and WORKPRO list 30 cm. PORIYA states 0.5 m. The M3 bullet also names 30 cm. The 250 M and Graco included lists do not name a pole, and one Power Painter 90 review says no ceiling extension was supplied despite a 15 m hose. Confirm the pole suits the gun and the guard. Never stand on a chair to make up for a missing pole.

Overspray indoors is less, not none

Wagner claims up to 55% less overspray with HEA. That is a listing claim, not a result measured across these ten products. Glass, flooring and trim still need cover. High pressure, a poor angle or the wrong tip can increase mist. Keep the gun square and use parallel passes. Wagner’s emulsion distance is about 10–25 cm; use the figure for your coating. Test on masking paper first. Do not spray a two-pack or isocyanate coating in an ordinary spare room.

Choosing for one room or a whole floor

Inside a 12 litre project, the Graco states 117 bar and a 7.5 m hose, with 3.2 from 28 ratings and early-failure reports. The M1 is the mid-price option for thicker coating, and its reviews also include stoppages. The 250 M is the stronger all-round listing for empty rooms when you will pay £475 and mask properly. The NEU MASTER may suit a fence or a trial, but its 3,000 PSI title conflicts with a 3,000 kPa cell. PORIYA advertises a 0.5 m pole, an EU plug and no amazon.co.uk star line. Common questions

Can emulsion be sprayed without thinning?
Sometimes, but the paint tin and pump manual decide. Several listings claim no pre-thinning, while coating makers specify their own tip and dilution ranges. Do not add water merely to cure a poor fan; first check pressure, filter condition, tip size and whether the pump has enough flow.
Which tip is used for wall paint?
A 515 or 517 is common in manufacturer examples, but it is not universal. The final two digits identify different orifice sizes, and the larger 517 needs more flow. Match the exact emulsion maker’s range to the pump’s supported tip before spraying.
How much of an empty room needs masking?
Protect every surface that must remain free of paint, including the full floor, glass, trim, sockets, fittings and routes through doorways. Airless mist is not confined to the visible fan. Masking only the edge beside the wall is inadequate for indoor spraying.
Which listings include a ceiling extension?
The MaXpray M1, InoKraft NEO and WORKPRO list a 30 cm extension, and the PORIYA states 0.5 m. The M3 bullet names a 30 cm pole. The Graco and Control Pro 250 M included lists do not name one, while a Power Painter 90 reviewer says none was supplied.
Is a furnished living room a spray job?
Usually not for a first-time user. Masking furniture, flooring and fittings can remove the speed advantage, while a roller gives much tighter control. If the room cannot be emptied substantially, rolling is generally the more practical method.
Is a 9 m hose enough for one room?
It commonly provides useful reach in a standard empty room, provided the pump and container can stand safely and the hose route stays clear. Room layout matters more than a universal minimum. A longer hose also holds more coating and takes more effort to flush.
Does lower overspray mean I can skip dust sheets?
No. “Up to 55% less overspray” is a Wagner claim, not zero mist. Floors and adjacent surfaces still need full protection, and you still need the ventilation and protective equipment required by the coating and manual.
