Lava rocks for a gas barbecue

Updated: 21 October 2026

You have a bag of lava next to a gas grill, and the bag does not say whether that grill was built with a lava tray. Lava rocks for a gas barbecue belong only in a grill designed with a lava bed. A Weber gas grill is a refusal, not a smaller dose. The ranked bags stay on the [lava rocks comparison](/hub/outdoor-fire-pits/lava-rocks). Peter F. checked Weber UK documents and these amazon.co.uk listings on 20 October 2026. We did not taste the food or measure smoke. Only if the grill was built for lava

Weber UK guides say do not use charcoal, briquettes or lava rock in a Weber gas grill. One UK LPG example names a regulator to BS 3016 at 37 millibar and a 3–13 kg cylinder. Consumer care says lava or ceramic briquettes void the warranty. Flavorizer bars vaporise drips instead of holding them. A handful to see is still a no. Another brand’s lava tray is the case this page can help. A 4.5-star ranking does not overrule the manual.

Chip size and the grate

HENDI, B07CYRD4DR, is 3 kg of fine lava, model 152706, from the Netherlands, at £7.62, about £2.54 per kilogram, stated for gas barbecues. No centimetre range is printed. UK reviews put pieces at about 2 cm and say dust falls through the grate, and that much of the box is ordinary stone. HENDI’s coarse 5 kg, model 152805, is a different SKU. Do not merge it into this fine box. Black Rock Grill, B00ECXW86A, is 4 kg of unfinished brown lava at 4–8 cm, model 936, from Turkey, at £19.50. A 24 kg bullet disagrees with the 4 kg line. Use 4–8 cm when the tray was built for that lump, and the fine box when the grate holds a small chip. The SOUJOY bags are the fire-pit surface in this set. The wider size check is on the lava rocks buying guide.

Grease, flavour and flare-ups

Fat on hot stone can flash. That is why Weber does not want lava, and why Flavorizer bars vaporise drips instead of pooling them. On a grill built with a lava tray, a greasy bed still flares and still needs cleaning. Lava is a heat store and a drip surface, not a wood chip. A review that prefers the HENDI chip to beads is a shape preference, not a tasting panel. Wash a glazed bed when the grill is cold. The fire-table picks are on best lava rocks for a gas fire pit.

Outdoor gas, then stop

Keep the barbecue outdoors, on the hose and regulator it was sold with. EN 498 is what Calor points buyers to. It is not stamped on these bags. If you smell gas, shut off at the cylinder and do not relight. One UK review of HENDI lava describes a piece exploding after about 20 minutes and causing burns. That is one report, not a rate. Do not cook over stone that has sat in the rain. If something cracks, stand back, turn the gas off, and let the grill cool. If the grill forbids lava, buy nothing here. HENDI 152706, at £7.62, is the fine box, with the ordinary-stone reviews attached.

Common questions

Can I put lava rocks in a Weber gas barbecue?
No. Weber UK guides say not to use charcoal, briquettes or lava rock in a Weber gas grill. Consumer care says lava or ceramic briquettes void the warranty, and it points to flare-ups and cleaning. Flavorizer bars are the maker’s substitute because they vaporise drips instead of pooling them. A small test handful is still a no. The 37 millibar figure in one UK LPG guide belongs to that Weber, not to the bag.
What size stays on the grate?
Match the chip to the gaps. HENDI’s fine box has no printed centimetre range, and UK reviews describe pieces around 2 cm plus dust that falls through. That can suit a close catering grate and fail a wide home bar. Black Rock Grill is listed at 4–8 cm and 4 kg. Large pieces may need breaking for a shallow tray, and one reviewer found 4 kg too little for a four-burner. The tumbled bags are fire-pit sizes in this set, not the default barbecue refill.
Is the HENDI fine box the catering refill?
It is the fine 3 kg refill in this set, model 152706, stated for gas barbecues, at a comparison price of £7.62. It is not HENDI’s coarse 5 kg model 152805, which is a different product. The amazon listing’s included-components line says Charcoal barbecue Resto, so do not read the box as a grill. UK reviews say much of it can be ordinary stone. Sort that out, and skip the box if your grate already drops fines.
Will lava rock add a measurable smoky flavour?
These sources do not give a flavour score. Lava holds heat and catches drips on a grill that was built to use it. It is not a wood chip, and it does not make the cook smokeless. A review that prefers the HENDI chip to beads on a gas barbecue or a Kadai is a shape preference. It is not a tasting result you can put a number on. If you wanted smoke flavour, this bag is the wrong tool.
What if a rock cracked or popped on the grill?
Turn the gas off, stand back, and let the grill cool before you move anything. One UK review of HENDI lava describes a rock exploding after about 20 minutes and causing burns. That is one report, not a failure rate. Wet stone is a known warning from suppliers because the pores hold water. Do not relight to finish the cook, and do not lean over the grate to find the piece. If you smell gas as well, leave the cylinder shut and get help.
