Lava rocks buying guide

Updated: 21 October 2026

You are topping up a gas fire table, replacing the stone in a lava-bed barbecue, or dressing a wood bowl, and the results all look like the same brown bag. A lava rocks buying guide should tell you which piece size stays on the grate and off the pilot, then which bag weight the manual still allows. The ranked amazon.co.uk cards, with shelf prices and review counts, sit on the [lava rocks comparison](/hub/outdoor-fire-pits/lava-rocks). Peter F. checked those listings on 20 October 2026 against public UK fire-pit guides. There was no lab burn, and no British Standard for bagged lava we can cite as a pass mark. Match the job first

Three jobs share one search. A shallow gas fire table wants one pebble layer, with the pilot, electrode and thermocouple clear. A lava-bed barbecue wants a chip that stays on its grate. FirePit.co.uk says there is no universal depth. Brightstar Fires sells 5 kg as one layer over about 1,800 cm² and tells you to keep stone off the pilot cage. That is one shop’s burner. If the booklet forbids lava, stop. A Weber gas grill is the clearest skip: Weber UK says not to use lava rock. Grease and Flavorizer bars are on lava rocks for a gas barbecue. A SOUJOY indoor-and-outdoor bullet does not authorise gas in a room.

Piece size against the grate or burner

The SOUJOY 1–2 in bag, about 25–50 mm, is the tumbled fire-table size at £15.99, rank 40 in Outdoor Fire Pits. The 2–3 in bag is the same price, coarser, rank 69, with four UK reviews in the notes. Black Rock Grill is unfinished brown lava at 4–8 cm and 4 kg, £19.50. Reviewers break the large end for a shallow tray. One 4 kg bag was too small for a four-burner. HENDI is 3 kg of fine lava, model 152706, with no centimetre range, at £7.62. UK reviews put pieces at about 2 cm and say dust falls through the grate. Short picks are on best lava rocks for a gas fire pit.

Weight without burying the burner

Brightstar’s 5 kg bag is one layer over about 1,800 cm², at £14.40 on that shop. HENDI is 3 kg. Black Rock Grill’s weight line is 4 kg, and a bullet says 2 kg covers about 35×25 cm. The 1–2 in bag is titled 10 lb, package line 4.48 kg, about £3.57 per kilogram. The 2–3 in bag is 4.54 kg, about £3.52 per kilogram. One review measured a 1–2 in bag at about 40×40 cm. Two bags were slightly too much for a small square table. If the next bag would cover the pilot, leave the bowl a little open.

What the listing is actually selling

Black Rock Grill’s 4.5 from 2,160 reviews ranks 23 in Barbecuing Charcoal, and the file includes pond and plant buyers. The listing does not show the rock is safe for fish. A bullet says 24 kg against the 4 kg line. HENDI’s 4.0 from 818 reviews sits in cooking accessories. UK reviews say much of the box is ordinary stone. One review describes a rock exploding after about 20 minutes and causing burns. That is one report, not a rate. The components line says Charcoal barbecue Resto. The 1–2 in bag is 4.5 from 164, rank 40. A search on 20 October 2026 showed HENDI nearer £11.77 and that bag nearer £16.99. This comparison keeps £7.62, £15.99 and £19.50.

Common questions

What piece size suits a shallow gas fire table?
In this set, tumbled stone around 1–2 in (about 25–50 mm) is the fire-table size. Brightstar and FirePit.co.uk both keep the layer off the pilot, and neither publishes a universal depth you can copy onto every burner. If your manual asks for a coarser fill, the 2–3 in SOUJOY bag is the closer listing, though only four UK reviews sit in its notes. Skip 4–8 cm lumps when reviewers already have to break them for a shallow tray.
When is 4–8 cm too big, and when is fine lava too small?
Black Rock Grill’s 4–8 cm pieces are too big when they stand proud of a shallow fire-table tray or have to be hammered to fit. They can still suit a lava-bed barbecue that was built for that lump, if one 4 kg bag covers the burners. HENDI’s fine chip is too small when dust and pieces around 2 cm fall through a wide grate, or when fines can enter fire-pit jets. The listing prints no centimetre range, so you cannot check the chip against a manual figure before it arrives.
Why does one Black Rock Grill bullet say 24 kg?
The title, the style line and the item weight say 4 kg of 4–8 cm brown lava, model 936, from Turkey, at £19.50. A separate bullet says 24 kg. Those cannot both be the quantity in the bag. A coverage line that 2 kg covers about 35×25 cm belongs to the 4 kg story. Treat the contradiction as a skip until the listing agrees with itself.
Is a 4.5-star charcoal ranking a fire-pit test?
No. Black Rock Grill’s 4.5 from 2,160 reviews is real on amazon.co.uk, and rank 23 in Barbecuing Charcoal fits a barbecue buyer better than a fire-table buyer. The star file also includes pond and plant reviews, and the listing does not show the rock is safe for fish. The SOUJOY 1–2 in bag is the one ranked in Outdoor Fire Pits, at 40, from 164 reviews at 4.5. Stars are not a burn test.
What if the grill is a Weber?
Do not add lava rock. Weber’s own UK guides forbid charcoal, briquettes and lava rock in a Weber gas grill, and consumer care says lava or ceramic briquettes void the warranty. Flavorizer bars are the maker’s substitute. Piece size and a star rating do not override that.
