Valved or unvalved FFP3

Updated: 21 October 2026

The cup is already warm, and the next listing shows a small plastic flap. Valved or unvalved FFP3 is that choice: the flap does not raise the class, it decides where the air you breathe out goes, and it can make a dusty hour less clammy when you work alone. If someone else is in the room, you want the mask sold without a valve. The [FFP3 mask](/hub/medical-protection/ffp3-mask) comparison holds the packs. Peter F. compared those amazon.co.uk listings with HSE guidance and ran no laboratory test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What an FFP3 exhalation valve changes

The valve opens as you breathe out and shuts as you breathe in. Dust in the air you inhale still has to cross the filter, so a valved mask can carry the same FFP3 marking as an unvalved one. The breath you push out usually leaves through the flap without that filter. The valve is not a gas or vapour filter. The D mark on the 3M Aura 9332+ is the clogging test, not a valve grade. HSE’s factor of 20 holds only when that model seals, valved or not.

When a valve earns its place

Pick a valve when the dust is coming in, the work is warm, and you are alone. HSE asks for assigned protection factor 20 on most wood cutting and never chooses a valve for you. Three listings state one: the 3M Aura 9332+ ten-pack B000VDQL4K at £58.03, the five-pack B07GTFCS8R at £50.79, and the Spanner six-layer ten-pack B0DD8C7VJL at £12.95. Skip the Aura if it will not seal. The shortlist is on the best FFP3 mask page.

When you want the exhaled air filtered

Choose an unvalved FFP3 when other people need your breath filtered. A June 2022 factsheet from East London NHS Foundation Trust prefers unvalved FFP3 in that clinical setting and says a valved mask is not fluid resistant. Inhaled air on a valved FFP3 still crosses the filter. A surgical mask over the valve, or tape on the flap, is not an HSE method. The seal check in how to fit an FFP3 mask is its own job, because a puff at the flap is not by itself a leak at the cheek.

If the listing never says valve

Silence is not a hidden valve, and it is not proof the mask is unvalved. The Spanner twenty-pack and ten-pack, the Jiada box, and both Apex JADA packs do not state a valve in the notes we used. The moulded Spanner at £16.95 has a silent title and one review that mentions a valve, so it stays off the stated list. Class and the NR mark belong in the FFP3 mask buying guide.

Common questions

Does a valve protect me less from dust?
For the air you breathe in, the valve is not a lower class. A valved FFP3 still draws inhaled air through the filter, and the printed class remains FFP3 when that is the mark on the mask. What leaves through the flap is your exhaled breath, usually unfiltered. Your own protection still depends on the seal. HSE’s factor of 20 assumes a good fit on that model, and a gap at the nose wastes the class either way.
Does an FFP3 valve protect other people?
It usually does not. The valve lets your breath leave with less resistance, heat and moisture, and that stream is not the filtered one. When the people near you are the reason for the mask, an unvalved FFP3 matches the job. East London NHS Foundation Trust’s June 2022 factsheet makes that point for its clinical setting and says a valved mask is not fluid resistant. That limit is about source control and fluids, not about dust on the way in.
Will a valve stop my glasses fogging?
People report both outcomes, so a valve is a weak promise for spectacles. One review on the valved Spanner ten-pack says the valve cuts condensation. The 3M Aura 9332+ bullets talk about less fogging from the sculpted nose panel, which is a different piece from the Cool Flow valve. Choose the valve for heat when you are working alone. Do not buy it as a guarantee that the lenses stay clear for a full sanding session.
Which listings here actually state a valve?
Three kept listings state one in the title or the bullets: the 3M Aura 9332+ ten-pack B000VDQL4K at £58.03, the five-pack B07GTFCS8R at £50.79, and the Spanner six-layer ten-pack B0DD8C7VJL at £12.95. The moulded Spanner ten-pack B0GYFTRLFK at £16.95 has only a review mention, so it stays off that list. Every other kept ASIN in this comparison was silent on a valve in the title and bullets we used.
Can I tape the valve shut?
Tape does not turn a valved mask into an unvalved one. The flap is designed to open when you exhale, and covering it changes a product you were not sold as a sealed respirator without a valve. The amazon.co.uk listing cannot show that the taped mask still performs as the FFP3 you selected. If exhaled air has to be filtered, buy a pack listed without a valve. A surgical mask over the flap is a supplier suggestion, not an HSE method.
Is a valved FFP3 reusable?
The valve does not extend the life of a disposable mask. Bullets on the 3M Aura 9332+ say FFP3 NR D, so you bin it after the shift. HSG53 puts that shift at about eight hours, sooner if the mask is wet or breathing becomes hard. A separate Amazon attribute on the ten-pack says reusable. Both lines are on the file, and the NR bullets are the marking we follow. A cooler valve is not a reason to wear yesterday’s mask.
