How to fit an FFP3 mask

Updated: 21 October 2026

The sander is off and fine dust from the last cut sits on the bench. The usual failure is a gap at the cheek, the chin, or the nose. This is how to fit an FFP3 mask: bare skin where the rim sits, an undamaged head-strap mask, and a user seal check each time it goes on. That check is not a face fit test, and this page does not rank boxes. Marks and harness sit on the [FFP3 mask](/hub/medical-protection/ffp3-mask) comparison. Peter F., editor for DIY & tools, took the steps from the HSE poster and INDG479. No wear trial was run. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Before it goes on your face

The rim has to meet skin. HSE states that facial hair blocks the seal on tight-fitting respiratory protective equipment, and that one model will not fit every face. If the beard is staying, use loose-fitting powered equipment. A crushed nose clip, a wet filter, or a snapped strap means that piece is finished. The HSE poster shows a head-strap disposable. Ear loops drag the cup sideways. If the packet is ear loops, use the FFP3 mask buying guide before you treat the box as the control.

Putting a head-strap mask on

Follow the picture in the box when it differs from the poster. Cup the mask, nose clip at the fingertips, and set the lower edge under the chin. Bring the lower strap around the neck, below the ears, then the upper strap onto the crown. Mould the clip with both hands. A one-finger poke leaves a gap at each inner corner of the eye. Put glasses on afterwards, frames on the mask. Do this in clean air.

The user seal check

Cover the filter without shoving the cup off its seat, and breathe in sharply. On the HSE poster the mask should pull onto the face and stay there for about ten seconds. A valve changes which breath shows a leak: on a valved mask the exhale leaves through the valve, so use a sharp inhale. That direction comes from the University Hospitals Birmingham fitting note. Valve choice sits on valved or unvalved FFP3. Glasses that steam within a minute are a nose leak. Step out of the dust and reshape the clip.

How long, and when to stop

HSG53 keeps continuous wear of unpowered tight-fitting equipment under one hour, then a break in clean air. A mask marked NR covers one shift, about eight hours, and sooner if it is wet or the straps have stretched. INDG479 gives a quantitative pass fit factor of 100 for an FFP3 disposable half mask. HSE points to BSIF Fit2Fit as evidence of tester competence. A kitchen-table check does not assign protection factor 20. Where the open question is the class, FFP3 vs FFP2 compares the two.

Common questions

What order do the straps go on?
Cup the mask over your nose and mouth, nose clip at the top and the lower edge under the chin. Place the bottom strap around the neck, below the ears, then the top strap on the crown. Mould the clip with both hands after the mask is seated. If the leaflet shows a different order, follow the leaflet.
How do I know an FFP3 mask seals?
Cover the filter without shoving the cup off your face and breathe in. The mask should pull onto the skin and stay there for about ten seconds, which is the check on the HSE disposable-respirator poster. Air at the cheek, chin, or nose means you reset the straps and the clip, then try again. The check covers this donning only. It is not a face fit test.
What if my glasses steam up?
Fog on the lenses usually means warm breath is escaping at the nose bridge. Step out of the dust before you lift the mask. In clean air, mould the clip again with both hands, set the glasses on the outside of the mask, and repeat the seal check. If the lenses still cloud, that mask is not sealing. Keep the sander off until a fresh check holds.
Can I wear an FFP3 mask with stubble?
Stubble and a beard leave a leak where the rim should meet skin, and a tighter strap leaves the leak open. The Health and Safety Executive treats facial hair as incompatible with tight-fitting respirators. Shave the cheeks, the chin, and the upper lip where the rim crosses. If you are keeping the beard, use loose-fitting powered equipment with a hood. A smaller FFP3 still needs bare skin.
Is a seal check the same as a fit test?
A user seal check is the breath you do yourself each time you put the mask on. A fit test is carried out by a competent person on the model you will wear, because one FFP3 does not fit every face. INDG479 lists a quantitative pass fit factor of 100 for an FFP3 disposable half mask. HSE points to BSIF Fit2Fit as evidence of tester competence. When the mask is a control at work, arrange that test.
Does a valve change the seal check?
The useful breath changes with the valve. On an unvalved mask a sharp exhale can show a leak at the edge, because air is not dumped through a valve. On a valved mask that exhale escapes through the valve, so a gap can stay hidden. Use a sharp inhale so the mask draws onto your face, and hold it for about ten seconds as the HSE poster shows. A valve still needs a clean-shaven seal around the rim.
