FFP3 mask buying guide

Updated: 21 October 2026

A box on amazon.co.uk promises seven layers or more than 99 percent filtration. An FFP3 mask buying guide is the check before you pay: which marks belong on the mask, which harness the Health and Safety Executive accepts at work, and which hazards this class does not cover. The [FFP3 mask](/hub/medical-protection/ffp3-mask) comparison holds the rows and prices, from £9.99 to £58.03. Peter F., editor for DIY & tools at productscompared.co.uk, used those listings plus HSE and GOV.UK guidance, and did not lab-test any mask. What to read on the mask

The mark that matters is printed on the mask, not only in the Amazon title. JSP’s UK support page lists a CE or UKCA mark, a four-digit number, EN 149, FFP3, then NR or R. GOV.UK allows UKCA or CE for PPE in Great Britain. Northern Ireland follows CE, or UKNI with CE. “UK certified” without those characters is a slogan. HSE assigns FFP3 a factor of 20 only when the fit is good. BSI’s summary puts filter efficiency at 99 percent in the laboratory, not if the nose clip gaps.

Harness, face and the job

HSE does not recommend ear-loop respirators, including those with clips, as tight-fitting respiratory protective equipment, and HSENI publishes the same alert for Northern Ireland. The bulletin is written around FFP2-style products. A headband still fails if a beard crosses the seal. An FFP mask filters particles, not gases or vapours. Most power-tool wood cutting is the HSE case for factor 20, with extraction first. FFP3 vs FFP2 sets the classes side by side. HSE sheet em6 allows an EN 149 FFP3 only for some short non-licensed asbestos tasks.

How the listings in this comparison score

The marks do not follow the price. Two codes clash: Jiada is stored as B0G2HHLSJ6 while the URL carries B0FFF9WSWN, and the £9.99 Apex pack is stored as B0FV2WTRHQ while the URL carries B0FV2VYCQH. The 3M ten-pack bullets say FFP3 NR D and CE 0086, and a separate attribute says Reusable, which is not the letter R. A live bullet for Spanner B0DZXQX7K2 on 19 October 2026 says stretchable ear loops. Which listing suits which job is on best FFP3 mask.

A short checklist

Before you pay, read the mask for EN 149, FFP3, a CE or UKCA mark and a four-digit body number. Prefer a head harness at work. Choose the valve on purpose, using valved or unvalved FFP3. If the print is missing, leave the listing. The seal is a separate job, set out in how to fit an FFP3 mask.

Common questions

Is a seven-layer mask the same as FFP3?
No. Seven layers describe how a manufacturer has built the fabric. FFP3 is a class in EN 149, with an HSE assigned protection factor of 20 only when the seal is good. Several boxes in this comparison lead with seven layers, or six on the valved Spanner pack, while the 3M Aura 9332+ bullets state FFP3 NR D. A cheaper multi-layer pack can still be the one you unpack for a short DIY job if that print is there. It is the wrong box if the print is absent.
What do NR and D mean?
NR means non-reusable. HSE’s HSG53 treats an NR disposable mask as one shift, about eight hours, then you throw it away, and sooner if it is wet or breathing becomes hard. R is the reusable class in the same standard, which is a different product from an NR mask that a shop has labelled reusable. D is the optional clogging test. It does not lift a mask from FFP2 to FFP3, and it does not mean you can hang an NR mask in the workshop for a second day.
Does a CE or UKCA mark mean the mask fits my face?
No. CE or UKCA, with the four-digit body number, is a marking route for PPE. GOV.UK allows UKCA or CE for PPE in Great Britain, and Northern Ireland uses CE, or UKNI with CE. The mark does not measure your face. HSE’s factor of 20 assumes a fit test on that model at work, plus a user seal check each time you put the mask on. Glasses that steam up are a leak at the nose. They are not a sign that the certification mark has expired.
Why does one 3M listing say both NR and Reusable?
The 3M Aura 9332+ ten-pack bullets say FFP3 NR D and CE 0086. A separate Amazon attribute on the same listing says Reusable. NR is the EN 149 mark for a mask you bin after the shift. The attribute does not rewrite the bullets or the 3M UK page. Treat the mask as non-reusable unless the product in your hand is printed with R.
Will an FFP3 mask stop paint fumes?
It filters particles, not solvent vapour or other gases, and it does not supply oxygen. A title that adds paint or spray is still selling a dust mask. Wood dust from most cutting and sanding is the HSE case for assigned protection factor 20, with extraction first. HSE sheet em6 allows EN 149 FFP3 only for some short non-licensed asbestos tasks, and this page is not a method for that work.
