Best wood moisture meter UK

Updated: October 2026

Four listings in this set carry most of the amazon.co.uk reviews, and they are not substitutes for one another. The best wood moisture meter UK for you is the one that matches the job: stove logs, a numbered check on timber and walls, or a surface that must not be marked. The full shelf, including the meters this page leaves out, is on the [wood moisture meter comparison](/hub/measuring-equipment/wood-moisture-meter). Products Compared read those listings and the UK review themes on 16 October 2026. There was no lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

For stove logs

If the job is a log pile, start with the Valiant FIR421. It is about £17.99, a pin meter, and reviewers use the colour change as a burn or do-not-burn glance. HETAS says Woodsure auditors use a Valiant meter, at around £20. That is HETAS’s phrase for the brand pattern. It is not a test of this amazon.co.uk listing. No numeric moisture range is printed, so the colour cue is a hint, not a certificate that a log is legal to sell. The included-components line lists only the meter, and one UK review says no batteries were supplied. Buy the Valiant if you will split the log, supply the cells, and treat the colour as a first sort. How 20% works as a burner target is on the moisture meter for firewood page.

For walls and timber with a number on screen

Dryzone, from Safeguard Europe, is about £24.99 and has the longest review line in the set. The listing states wood from 6–60% on eight scales and building materials from 0–40%. Wood accuracy is claimed at ±2%. That is a listing claim. Two AAA batteries are not included. The size bullet prints 15 cm × 60 cm, which does not match the package size of 17.1 × 6.9 × 4.2 cm. TopTes TS-630 is about £25.99, with 4.6 from 1,840 ratings. It claims ±2% and seven calibration scales, and a numeric wood span is not printed. The box lists three AAA cells, a carry pouch and a spare pair of probes. Choose Dryzone when you want both ranges printed. Choose TopTes when the pouch, the spare probes and the cells matter more. The order of those criteria is the buying guide.

When you must not mark the surface

Mecurate PDM-01 is about £24.99, pinless, with 4.5 from 1,871 ratings. Reviewers use it on plaster, cupboards and caravan panels because it leaves no holes. No numeric span and no ± figure are printed. The gift bullet lists a carrying bag and three AAA cells, and the included-components field says the meter only. One UK reviewer was not sure the readings matched a house survey. A pad is a comparison tool here, not a second survey. Proster PST326 is about £24.99 and is the compromise if you refuse to pick one sensor. Its pinless bullet states 0–100% relative humidity, no more than 20 mm deep. Read that line as relative humidity, not timber moisture content. The sensor argument in full is on the pin versus pinless page.

Who these are not for

The highest review count is not an automatic purchase. Dryzone’s 3,347 ratings come with pins and missing batteries. The Valiant’s HETAS mention does not make the FIR421 a certified instrument. The cheapest pins stay on the main table on purpose. S8603 is about £8.99 with only two UK review headers in the file. VivaStride is about £10.99 with no review line. GERUI is about £10.99 with printed ranges and a review that the settings are not explained. Those can still be a first pin if the checklist fits. None of these replaces a surveyor when you are about to open a wall, and none certifies a log for sale.

Common questions

Which meter is the firewood one?
The Valiant FIR421 is the firewood listing in this short list: a pin, a colour cue, and 4.6 from 1,749 ratings at about £17.99. HETAS notes that Woodsure auditors use a Valiant meter at around £20. You still split the log, and you still supply batteries, because the included line is the meter only. Any other pin in the set can show a percent if you prefer a number to a colour.
Which one avoids holes in plaster or a caravan?
The Mecurate PDM-01 is pinless, and UK reviews cite plaster, cupboards and caravans for that reason. The Proster PST326 can do the same job on its pinless mode, with a stated depth of no more than 20 mm on a relative-humidity scale. Valiant, Dryzone and TopTes are pins. They will mark a finished surface if you push the tips in.
Is the highest review count the one to buy?
Dryzone’s 3,347 ratings are the longest line, at 4.4, and that does not make it the firewood meter or the unmarked-wall meter. Review volume tells you that many UK shoppers have used it. It does not fix missing batteries, a stiff cap, or a pin that snapped in one hardwood floor. Match the sensor to the job before you sort by stars.
Is the Valiant best because HETAS mentions the brand?
HETAS says auditors use a Valiant meter. It does not say this FIR421 listing was tested, and it does not print a numeric range for the model. The mention is a reason to look at the Valiant for logs, alongside the about £17.99 shelf price and the battery gap. It is not a reason to use the colour cue as a sales certificate.
Does a colour screen mean the log is ready?
No. The Valiant’s colour cue and the TopTes tri-colour backlight are prompts on those listings. They are not Ready to Burn certification, and they are not a substitute for a fresh-split reading compared with about 20% and with the stove manual. A green light on wet wood is still wet wood if the number, where you have one, says so.
