Sound level meter buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are scrolling amazon.co.uk among orange handhelds, USB loggers, and classroom boards that all claim a decibel figure. This sound level meter buying guide puts the job first, then weighting and time response, then what integration and a Class claim actually mean on a consumer listing. The [sound level meter comparison](/hub/measuring-equipment/sound-level-meter) holds the twelve cards, from about £15.99 to £170.00. The Products Compared editorial team used those listings and the UK review text on 21 October 2026. We did not run a laboratory. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Start with the job

Buy the shape that matches the noise you care about, not the brightest backlight. A live check while you stand there needs a handheld you can move and read in seconds. Most of this shelf is that job, including Tadeto, TopTes, and V·RESOURCING. Noise that arrives when you are out needs stored samples. The Wintact WT1355A and the DANOPLUS DP-441 state tens of thousands of records and a USB path to a PC. A classroom or studio prompt wants a wall or desk board, such as the DANOPLUS DP-413 pair or the Kethvoz Wi-Fi display, not a pocket meter. A workplace exposure estimate is a different instrument: integrating LAeq, a C-weighted peak, a Class 2 claim that survives pattern evaluation, and a calibrator. None of the twelve listings states LAeq or LCpeak, so that job leaves this shelf. The 80 and 85 dB figures are on sound level meter for noise at work.

Weighting and time response

A-weighting follows how the ear hears mid frequencies and is the curve behind everyday exposure figures. C-weighting keeps more of the low end and is what peak limits use. If the listing only prints A, you cannot switch to C when a bang matters. The ALLmeter WT576 and the V·RESOURCING HSW-20-026 state A only. TopTes, Tadeto, ONE WORLD, Wintact, and the DANOPLUS DP-441 state A and C. Wall boards leave weighting blank or talk in dBA without a C path. Fast, about 125 ms where the listing defines it, follows speech and music. Slow, about one second, steadies a continuous machine. Neither setting is a C-weighted peak. Tadeto and LATNEX reviews describe missed rifle or air-rifle impulses. The button sequence is on how to use a sound level meter.

Integration, class, and a certificate

An integrating meter builds LAeq, the continuous equivalent level over a period, which employers compare with daily exposure. A live display is not that average, even if you watch it and guess. NoiseMeters' which-meter note and Cirrus Research's integrating-meter explainers tie a workplace estimate to an integrating Class 2 instrument, LAeq, LCpeak, and a calibrator to IEC 60942. IOSH Magazine's March 2022 piece treats Class 2 as the usual workplace minimum and Class 1 as tighter and dearer. That lives in guidance, not as a product name on regulation 4. No card in this set states LAeq or LCpeak. The LATNEX SM-130DB states EN 61672 Type 2 and a calibration certificate at about £113.99. The Institute of Acoustics has warned that a calibration certificate is not pattern evaluation of the instrument type. A ±1.5 dB or ±2.0 dB bullet is a listing figure, not a class rating.

Logging, displays, and what this shelf costs

Logging is worth paying for when the noise is intermittent and you will export the file. The DANOPLUS DP-441 states about 43,000 records, a colour chart, and Excel on Windows. The Wintact WT1355A states a similar record count, a 1/4-inch tripod thread, and a factory 94 dB line. UK reviewers often met a Chinese menu and awkward PC software. Memory without LAeq is still not a dose. Wall displays near £50 show green, amber, and red faces. They are prompts, not walk-around survey meters. Kethvoz at about £53.99 adds Wi-Fi alerts with no reviews and no certificate in the capture. The TECPEL DSL-330 at about £170.00 has no range, weighting, or accuracy on the listing, so skip it until a datasheet exists. This page does not crown a winner. The live ranking is on best sound level meter.

Common questions

What should I check before I buy a decibel meter?
Name the job first: live handheld, unattended log, wall prompt, or a formal survey. Then check weighting, time response, whether LAeq appears, and whether the listing states a range. Compare prices only after that order, or you will line up three different tools.
Is a Class 2 meter necessary at home?
For a home cinema, a neighbour note, or a relative machine check, a clear A-weighted handheld is usually enough. Class 2 language belongs to workplace and survey guidance. A Type 2 claim on a consumer card does not turn a Saturday reading into an abatement notice.
What is the difference between a live reading and an integrating meter?
A live reading is the level now. An integrating meter accumulates LAeq over a chosen time. Watching a live screen and averaging it in your head is not LAeq. None of these twelve states that integrating function.
Do I need both A and C weighting?
You need A for ordinary comparisons that track how loud something sounds. You need C available when peaks and bangs matter. A-only meters on this shelf are fine for many home checks and the wrong buy for peak-focused work.
Is a wall display the same purchase as a handheld?
No. A board is for people across a room. A handheld is for places you walk. A 13-inch classroom face will not replace a pocket meter for a car door or a cupboard.
Does ±1.5 dB on the listing mean the meter is Class 2?
No. The decibel tolerance is the seller's accuracy line. Class or Type language is a separate claim, and a certificate is not pattern evaluation.
When is data logging worth paying for?
Pay for logging when the event happens while you are away or when you need a time series you can export. If you only compare two rooms while you stand there, a live handheld under £30 is the cleaner spend.
