Pressure gauge buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have a port, a garden tap, or a tyre valve, and a listing that looks close enough. This pressure gauge buying guide is the order of decisions before you spend between £7.99 and £15.95 on one of the twelve amazon.co.uk gauges in our [pressure gauge comparison](/hub/measuring-equipment/pressure-gauge). By the end you should know whether you need a hose tester, a pipe dial, a vacuum scale, or a tyre gauge, and which range, thread, and fill belong to that job. Peter F. compared those listings and the captured reviews on 21 October 2026. There is no lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Start with the job, not the star rating

A hose tester, a Bourdon dial, a vacuum gauge, and a digital tyre gauge answer different questions. Uharbour, Stowberry, and Thermometer World are scaled 0–11 bar and 0–160 psi and screw onto a tap. They do not replace a 1/8 inch compressor port. The Innfeeltech dials are dry Bourdon gauges with bushings. One of them, at the same £7.99, is vacuum only, from −1 to 0 bar. The AA AADTP reads a tyre valve up to 100 psi and 6.85 bar. A pipe dial on a Schrader valve never starts, and the AA gauge on a BSP port never starts either. Sorting by stars still leaves the wrong connector. A 1/8 inch compressor port and a 3/4 inch hose tap are two purchases.

Put the working pressure in the middle of the scale

Brannan puts normal use between 25 and 75 per cent of the scale, and a pulsating maximum at or below 50 per cent of full scale. ITI UK says a steady working pressure should not sit above 75 per cent of full scale. Stewarts warns against deciding a system from the bottom tenth of the span. Class, where it is printed, is a percentage of the whole scale. Brannan states that class 1.6 means ±1.6 per cent of full-scale span. On the Hansfelds 0–10 bar dial that is ±0.16 bar at the 20 °C reference in BS EN 837-1, not ±1.6 per cent of the figure under the needle. Only the two Hansfelds listings state 1.6, both at £15.95, and neither includes a UKAS certificate.

Match the thread and the way the dial faces you

BSP parallel is the usual UK Bourdon end: a spigot, sealed with a washer, often copper. BSPT and NPT seal on the taper with PTFE tape, paste, or an anaerobic sealant. A parallel male forced into a taper female leaks or cracks the fitting. A reducer changes size. It does not turn NPT into BSP. Both Hansfelds gauges say G1/4 BSP, rear entry at 0–6 bar and bottom entry at 0–10 bar, and both carry the part number ssglincrimpeddualscaleSSGSBACK. The code does not show which way the stem points. The Innfeeltech 0–7 bar radial gauge says BSP in the title and BSPT on the attribute. Stowberry’s bullets say a hose-tap connector and the attribute says GHT. ITI lists bottom, centre-back, and lower-back mounts. Choose the mount from the title. The two Hansfelds listings are split on best pressure gauge UK.

Glycerin damps the needle. It is not a tighter class

Glycerin stops a vibrating needle from blurring. Controls4Steam and Stewarts put it on pulsation, and both keep it off oxygen and other strong oxidisers. The fill does not tighten class 1.6. The two Hansfelds listings name glycerin. JIVTO says the case is liquid-filled and does not name the fluid. The Innfeeltech lines mention vibration and do not say glycerin. Nothing in the twelve listings is described as oxygen-clean, safety-pattern, WRAS-approved, or UKCA-marked. A shaking compressor is the case for asking whether glycerin is worth the Hansfelds price. An oxygen line is the case for leaving every gauge in this set on the shelf. How the joint seals is on how to fit a pressure gauge.

Common questions

What range should I buy if I expect about 3 bar at a tap?
A 0–11 bar hose tester puts about 3 bar inside the middle band that Brannan describes as 25–75 per cent of scale. A 0–14 bar, 0–200 psi, 40 mm dial leaves that same 3 bar as a small mark. The 0–6 bar Hansfelds rear gauge would put 3 bar at half scale, but only on a rear G1/4 BSP port, not on a garden tap. The tap testers and the pipe dials are different tools.
Is class 1.6 a percentage of the reading or of the whole scale?
It is a percentage of the full-scale span. On a 0–10 bar dial, class 1.6 is ±0.16 bar at the 20 °C reference in BS EN 837-1, not ±1.6 per cent of whatever the needle shows. With a pointer stop, that class is described as applying from 10 to 100 per cent of the range. Only the two Hansfelds listings here state 1.6, and neither includes a UKAS certificate.
BSP, BSPT, or NPT: which one is on a UK port?
BSP parallel is the usual UK Bourdon end, and it seals on a washer. BSPT and NPT seal on the taper with tape, paste, or an anaerobic sealant. You still read the port you have. Hansfelds states G1/4 BSP, JIVTO and Uharbour state BSPT, and other rows conflict between title and attribute. A hose-tap nut is a third joint. GHT on the Stowberry attribute is not the same claim as BSP.
When is glycerin worth paying for, and when is it the wrong fill?
Consider it when the line pulses and you want the needle to sit still, which is what the two £15.95 Hansfelds gauges state, on top of class 1.6. It does not improve the class figure. It is the wrong fill on oxygen or another strong oxidiser, and none of these listings claims to be oxygen-clean. JIVTO’s liquid fill does not name the fluid.
Bottom entry or back entry?
Buy the mount that faces you once the stem is tight. The Hansfelds rear listing is 0–6 bar and the bottom listing is 0–10 bar, and they share one part number, so the title is the mount. ITI lists bottom, centre-back, and lower-back. A reducer changes diameter only.
Do the reducers in the box convert NPT to BSP?
No. A bushing, or the 3/8 inch and 1/2 inch reducers with the Hansfelds gauges, changes size inside one thread family. It does not make an NPT male into a BSP male. Where a listing already disagrees with itself, as the GERUI attribute does against its title, the reducer does not settle it. Match the form first, then the size.
