How to use a Huepar laser level

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have unboxed a Huepar, the green line is on the wall, and it is flashing. That flash decides whether the pencil mark is a level or a repair. This is how to use a Huepar laser level from the line lasers in our [Huepar laser comparison](/hub/measuring-equipment/huepar-laser): put it on something that does not move, unlock the pendulum, wait for a steady line, and mark the centre of the beam. We used the amazon.co.uk listings, Huepar’s UK page for the ZK04CG, and GOV.UK and HSE advice on Class 2. We did not run a lab test. Set it up so it can level itself

The pendulum only finishes the last few degrees. Where a card prints the window, it is about ±3°, or within 4° on the Y03CG. Roughly level the support first. A worktop, a camera tripod with the right thread, or the ZK03CGT’s own stand all work if they stand still. Unlock the pendulum for any mark that has to be level or plumb. The locked position is for carrying the tool and, on several models, for a slope. The GK011SG blinks outside ±3°. Switch on only the planes you need. Class 2, where the listing states it, is a visible beam under 1 mW. Do not stare into the line, and do not look along it with binoculars. If this tool is the wrong shape, the checks are on the Huepar laser level buying guide.

What the flash is telling you

On the ZK04CG, Huepar’s UK page splits a flash into two warnings. A rapid flash with a beep means the tool is outside ±3°. The line is not a datum. A slow flash about every 3 to 5 seconds means manual mode. The pendulum is locked, and the line sits at the angle you set. That is the mode for a stair rake. It is the wrong mode for a tile course. Do not pencil a mark from a flashing line. Mark the centre of a steady beam. If the line is steady and you still cannot see it, direct sun has washed the beam out. Pulse mode and a receiver are the next step, on Huepar laser level outdoor. Pulse without a detector does not make the stripe brighter to your eye.

Check square before you commit

A steady line can still be out of calibration. Check before adhesive, plaster or a long tile run. Set the tool at the height of the work, unlock it, and mark the centre of the horizontal at two points a few metres apart. Measure each mark down to one reference. If the two heights disagree by more than the stated tolerance scaled to that distance, stop. Check the verticals the same way if the job is square. A 360° tool does not remove the check.

Slopes, transport and when to stop

Manual mode is for a rake you have chosen, such as a stair string. Lock the pendulum, accept the slow flash or the locked switch your model describes, and set the angle. Switch back to a steady, unlocked line before the next horizontal mark. Lock the pendulum before you carry the tool. If a repeatable check misses the stated tolerance, return the unit. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 still covers a faulty tool. It does not cover a pendulum you have opened. Call a professional for foundations, drainage falls, or any level a drawing treats as certified. If the label is not Class 2, stop until you know the class. Where a card does, it states Class 2 under 1 mW.

Common questions

Which way should the pendulum switch be for a level line?
Use the unlocked, self-levelling position. On the cards that describe it, the pendulum can swing inside about ±3°, or within 4° on the Y03CG. The locked position is for transport and for manual slopes. A shelf, a plumb stud and a tile course need the unlocked position and a line that has stopped flashing.
Why is the line flashing quickly?
On the ZK04CG, a rapid flash and a beep mean the tool is outside ±3°. The base is tilted too far, or the support has moved. Level the stand and wait for a steady line. Other cards say the line blinks out of range and do not all quote the same timing, so confirm your manual. A quick flash is not a mark.
Why does it flash slowly every few seconds?
On the ZK04CG page, a flash about every 3 to 5 seconds is manual mode. The pendulum is locked and the tool is not self-levelling. Use it for a slope you intend. Leave it before the next line has to be level. If your manual describes the slow flash differently, follow that card.
How do I check it before I tile?
Mark the centre of a steady horizontal at two points a few metres apart and measure both down to the same reference. Compare the difference with the tolerance on your tool, scaled to that distance. Pro cards that print it state ±2 mm at 10 m. The B03CG highlight states ±3 mm at 10 m. If your unit misses that band on a repeatable check, return it before adhesive goes down.
Can I use it on a slope for stairs?
Yes, in manual mode, with the pendulum locked, so the line stays at the angle you set. On the ZK04CG that locked state is a slow flash, and it is not self-levelled. The Y03CG can show the angle on its LCD. Knocking the tripod changes the rake. Return to an unlocked, steady line before you mark a level course.
When should I stop and send it back?
Send it back when a repeatable check misses the stated tolerance, when a line will not come on, or when verticals that should be square are consistently out. One GK011SG review describes a horizontal that failed within two months. Opening the housing is the point where a return becomes a damaged return. Foundations and drainage falls belong with someone who certifies levels.
