How to use an endoscope camera

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have a semi-rigid 10 m inspection camera and a hole smaller than your hand. The useful next half hour is a picture from outside that space. The version that goes wrong is a forced bend, a soaked handset, or you climbing in to finish the look. This is how to use an endoscope camera of this type: get a picture first, shape the cable, set the light, and stop when it resists. We wrote it from the five amazon.co.uk listings in the [endoscope camera 10m comparison](/hub/measuring-equipment/endoscope-camera-10m) and from public UK guidance, on 21 October 2026. It is not a ranking and not a lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Get a picture before the cable goes in

Charge the Yamokizy SC08 and the Ferdiiz P430-10M on USB-C. They have their own battery and a 4.3 inch screen. Switch on in the room and press the power button more than once. On the Ferdiiz screen that button is what UK reviews say sticks or dies. Phone cameras are not charged. Install Usee Plus, UseePlus, or SUP-ANESOK before you leave the room. On Android the phone must host the USB device. That is On-The-Go. The fork is the screen or phone page.

Shape the semi-rigid cable, then push

These cables hold a curve. They do not steer. Bend the first half-metre into a route you can already see. Push slowly and stop when resistance grows. That hard stop is the end of the attempt. A 60 degree limit in another brand's manual does not apply to these coils. Pulling harder, once the head is caught, is how cameras get left in pipes. Ten metres of cable is not ten metres of pipe. A drain run is the DIY drain camera guide.

Set the light and stay inside the focus band

Each head has eight LEDs. Start low, or a close pale surface will glare. Ease the head into the stated band: about 4–10 cm on the Yamokizy, about 2–10 cm on the Ferdiiz screen and the Ennovor, about 1–10 cm on the Ferdiiz phone camera. Vorth gives no centimetre range, so find it on a test surface. UK reviews say the LEDs cope in a cupboard and fail across a ceiling void. If muck films the lens, withdraw it and wipe the glass.

Come out the way you went in

Fit the hook, magnet, or side mirror only after the route has come out cleanly, then take them off before a tight bend. The mirror is a glance from one front lens, not a second camera. Come out slowly. IP67 here is a probe claim, not permission to rinse the handset. Stop if the cable will not free, if you smell gas, or if the better view means climbing in. HSE leaflet INDG258 says a remote look is how you avoid entry.

Common questions

Do I charge it or plug it into the phone?
Charge the Yamokizy SC08 and the Ferdiiz P430-10M. They have their own battery, and the Yamokizy bullet claims more than three hours. Do not charge the Ferdiiz AN112-10M, the Vorth, or the Ennovor. Those run from the phone, and the AN112 bullet says the camera is not charged. Install Usee Plus, UseePlus, or SUP-ANESOK, matching the listing, and confirm the picture in the room before the head goes into the hole.
How do I stop the picture going black on Android?
Confirm the phone can host a USB device. That is On-The-Go, which the Ennovor bullet tells you to check. Seat the plug, open the named app, and wait before you move the cable. If the picture drops, reseat the lead once. UK reviews of the Vorth describe Lightning flicker and a jump back to the home screen. A black image can also be the lens against a surface, or LEDs that are too dim for a large void.
Why is the image soft when the head touches the pipe?
Stated focus starts at about 1–4 cm and ends around 10 cm. Touching the wall puts the surface closer than the lens can use. Pull back a centimetre or two until the texture appears. Glare from the eight LEDs on a pale surface looks like a fault as well, so lower the brightness first. Vorth does not state a centimetre band, so find that distance on a test surface.
Can I bend the cable round a 90 degree joint?
You can pre-shape a gentle curve into a route you can already see. Do not force the head through a tight joint once it has stopped. These cables are semi-rigid, not steerable. A 60 degree limit in another brand's manual applies to that snake, not to these coils. If resistance rises, stop. Feeding the rest of a 10 m cable into a stalled head is how the coil bunches or stays in the pipe.
How do I get it back out if it sticks?
Stop pulling. If the picture shows the head on a lip, push in slightly, then withdraw while you watch. Do not add a drill or a second person hauling on the cable. If a gentle push-and-pull fails, leave it for a plumber or a drainage firm rather than breaking the pipe. There is no distance counter, so you may not know how far in the head is. That is a reason to stop early.
When do I stop and call someone?
Stop when the cable will not return, when you would have to enter a chamber or tank, or when the job involves gas or a live consumer unit. HSE confined-space guidance says to look from outside. Also stop when someone else must rely on the result, such as a house purchase, because this camera cannot produce a coded survey with distances. A live look at a trap you can reach from the room is the job these tools actually do.
