DIY drain camera 10m

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are at a slow sink, or a manhole cover in the garden, hoping a camera from about £19 to £36 will say whether the drain is blocked or someone else's problem. A 10 m endoscope can show an object in a trap you can already reach. It cannot produce the coded survey a buyer or an insurer will ask for. This DIY drain camera 10m page is that boundary, drawn from the five amazon.co.uk listings on the [endoscope camera 10m comparison](/hub/measuring-equipment/endoscope-camera-10m). We did not survey a sewer and we did not lab-test these cameras. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

A trap is not a sewer survey

These cameras finish a small, close job. One UK review of the Ferdiiz P430-10M, at £23.99, describes hooking plastic caps out of a shower drain the reviewer could reach. An Ennovor review found a sink clog. A buried run or a shared drain is a different job. A UK review of the Ennovor W400E-10M, at £18.99, said the light and focus were too short once muck covered the lens. A homemade skid is how a cheap head becomes a blockage.

Ten metres of cable is not ten metres of pipe

Every kept listing states about 10 m of semi-rigid cable. That is the coil, not the distance through bends. There is no distance counter and no sonde. IP67 is not sewage resistance and not a rating for the phone or the screen. Vorth's one hour in 1 m is the seller's line. A trade push-rod of about 100 m has been advertised around £3,300. That is the cost of owning a survey kit, not a quote for your house. Feeding the cable is on the how to use an endoscope camera page.

What a coded survey contains

A survey other people can rely on has a position along the pipe and a defect code. BS EN 13508-2 is the British Standard for that coding outside buildings. UK surveyors apply it with the WRc Manual of Sewer Condition Classification. A phone clip has neither field. ScopeView, a UK drain-camera seller, says a short handheld scope is not a CCTV survey system. A house purchase or an insurance dig is the wrong place to skip a contractor. Wall and loft checks are on the 10m endoscope camera buying guide.

Stay out of the chamber

Do not climb into the manhole for a better picture. HSE leaflet INDG258 says to avoid confined spaces and to inspect from outside. A chamber can hold sewage gas, low oxygen, or a sudden inrush. If the view from the fresh air is not enough, call a drainage firm and ask for chainage and condition codes. The Ferdiiz screen review was a hook in a shower trap. At the sink, screen or phone is the screen or phone page.

Common questions

Can I survey my drains before I buy a house with this camera?
No. A survey a buyer or an insurer can use needs distances and a code system such as BS EN 13508-2, applied in the UK with the WRc manual. These cameras have no counter and no code list. A clip of a trap can show a cap or a rag. It will not show a displaced joint with a chainage. Commission a drainage firm and ask for a coded CCTV report before you exchange.
Will 10 m reach the boundary?
The bullet says the cable is about 10 m. It does not say the head will reach the boundary. Bends and debris stop a semi-rigid cable, and you have no counter. Some UK reviews describe about 16 feet on a 10 m bullet, so measure the coil. A boundary run, especially a shared one, is a contractor's push-rod or crawler.
Is IP67 enough for a foul drain?
No. IP67 is dust-tight plus a temporary immersion test, commonly 1 m for 30 minutes on the tested enclosure. It does not mean sewage, heat, or pressure. On these listings the claim sits with the probe. The phone and the screen are not given that rating. Vorth's one-hour sentence is the seller's line. Keep the handset dry.
What is a CCTV drain survey that this is not?
It is a visual inspection from a known access, in a known direction, with defects coded and the position recorded. BS EN 13508-2 sets that coding out for drains and sewers outside buildings. UK firms use the WRc Manual of Sewer Condition Classification. You receive a report someone else can read without standing next to you. A 10 m phone endoscope can show a close image for a moment. It does not produce that report.
Can I open a manhole and lower the camera?
You can look from the open air into an accessible inlet without entering. Do not climb in, and do not lean into the chamber for a better angle. HSE guidance exists because those spaces can hold gas, low oxygen, or a sudden inflow. If the picture from outside is not enough, book a drainage survey rather than kneeling over the opening with a phone.
What if the camera gets stuck?
Stop pulling. A hard tug can leave the head or damage the pipe. These cables have no locator, so a contractor cannot home in on a sonde you do not have. If a gentle release fails, call a firm and say a consumer endoscope is stuck, how you inserted it, and that there is no distance reading. Do not add rods on top of the camera.
When is a look in the trap enough?
When you can reach the trap from the room, you want to see a specific object, and nobody else has to rely on the result. The shower-cap retrieval on the Ferdiiz screen camera is that job. It stops being enough when the slow waste continues past the trap, when the run is shared, or when you are about to buy, sell, or dig. Then you want a coded survey, not another pass with the same 10 m cable.
