Cable detector vs wire tracer

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have a shelf to hang and a robot mower that has stopped on the lawn, and one amazon.co.uk search seems to cover both. It does not. A cable detector vs wire tracer choice is between a tool that listens for an energised field in plaster and a tool that follows a tone on a dead wire. This page, from Peter F. on 22 October 2026, puts the eleven wall scanners in our [cable detector comparison](/hub/measuring-equipment/cable-detector) beside the VXSCAN F04. Prices are the amazon.co.uk figures captured on 19 October 2026. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

The purchase people mix up

The shelf needs a wall scanner. The mower needs a tracer. The mix-up is the price: the VXSCAN is £42.74 and the Bosch Truvo is £41.98. The Truvo states live cables to 50 mm and metal to 70 mm. The F04 states about 2–3 feet and 1,000 feet along, and it forbids a live cable. The higher figure does not buy the other job. Hire sits in the cable detector buying guide.

What a wall scanner is actually sensing

A wall scanner’s AC mode looks for the field around a live single-phase cable. The Truvo en-GB manual puts that search at about 110–240 V and 50–60 Hz, to 50 mm, with voltage applied. The listing states 50 mm and 70 mm for metal, and it does not claim timber. The FOLAI TH550 prints 85–240 V to 2 inches and a stud mode. Metal mode can light for a pipe, a nail, or a cable. A dead mower loop has no mains field, so silence on the lawn tells you nothing. The pass is how to use a cable detector.

What the VXSCAN is actually sensing

The F04 is a tone-and-probe. You connect the transmitter to a dead single strand or a parallel pair, and the receiver follows the tone. The listing says not for stranded wire, and that a live cable can damage the device and the user. The stated reach is about 2–3 feet and 1,000 feet. UK reviews, 3.8 from 50, find a break when the sensitivity is quiet a few inches off the wire. One review found nothing on armoured mains 18 inches down, and an indoor test reached about 15 cm. That is not a wall scan before a drill.

Digging needs a third tool

A trench, or a hole near the incoming supply, is a third tool: a CAT and generator, used by someone trained, after the plans. HSE’s HSG47 is that book, and LSBUD is the free enquiry to the asset owners. The Truvo will not become a service locator because it costs almost as much as the F04. The skips inside the wall-scanner half are on the best cable detector page.

Common questions

Will my stud finder trace the mower wire?
No. A stud finder or wall scanner in this set looks for timber, metal, or the field from a live cable in a wall. A robot-mower boundary is a dead loop in the ground. There is no energised field for an AC mode to hear, and metal mode is not a map of a thin buried wire. Use a tracer made for a dead single wire.
Will the VXSCAN scan the wall before I drill?
No. The F04 listing is a tone tracer for a dead single or parallel conductor. It says it cannot detect live cables. Clipping it to a socket circuit risks the tool and you. It is also the wrong shape of answer for a stud or a pipe behind plasterboard. For a shelf, use a wall scanner and still treat a quiet pass as unfinished. The F04’s £42.74 price does not make it the premium version of the Truvo.
Why must the tracer stay off the mains?
The VXSCAN listing says it cannot detect live cables, that the cable must be neutral before connection, and that a live cable can damage the unit and endanger the user. The tone method needs a dead conductor. UK mains at 230 V are outside that job. One review that tried it against an armoured mains cable 18 inches down got no useful result. De-energise only if you know the circuit and the wire is the kind the listing allows. Otherwise do not connect it.
What wire types does the F04 claim?
A single strand, or a double strand run in parallel. The listing says it is not for stranded wire. The stated reach is up to 2–3 feet deep and 1,000 feet along. Reviews also mention pet-fence cable, irrigation cable, and a break in a boundary loop. Those are claims and user reports, not a guarantee under every lawn. Stranded cable is the type the bullet excludes.
Is a dearer wall scanner a tracer?
No. The Bosch Truvo at £41.98 is the dearest wall scanner in this set, and it remains a detector for live cables to 50 mm and metal to 70 mm. It has no tone transmitter and no claim to follow a garden loop. The VXSCAN is a few pounds more and does the opposite job. Price order on the comparison table is not a ladder from stud finder to underground locator.
What if the tracer tone is everywhere?
Turn the sensitivity down until the tone is quiet a few inches off a wire you can already see, then follow that quieter tone. UK reviews say a wheel set too high looks like a failed search, or like static across the lawn. An earphone socket is on the receiver if the garden is noisy. If the tone never becomes local, stop and check that you are on a dead single or parallel wire, not on a stranded or live cable.
