Move a fridge with a sack truck: upright and strapped

A fridge freezer strapped upright on a two-wheel sack truck in a narrow UK hallway

Strap the fridge upright on a sack truck and match the two-wheel rating. A narrow toe plate and stairs change the job. Plug-in waits follow your maker.

The fridge freezer is still in the kitchen, and the only truck is a folding sack truck with a shallow toe plate. You can move a fridge with a sack truck on a flat route when the cabinet stays upright, the door is taped, and a strap holds the carcass to the frame. It goes wrong when the plate misses the foot, the strap is a loose bungee, or the cabinet is laid on its side at a doorway.

Peter F. checked these notes in October 2026 against Bosch UK's fridge-moving page, Safestore's transport guide, and the amazon.co.uk listings in our aluminium sack truck comparison. There is no lab trial and no weighed appliance. Prices and star lines are the UK figures in that extract, and they move. In short

You can move a fridge with a sack truck on the flat if you empty it, tape the door, strap the cabinet, and keep it upright. A household folder is a different tool from a 300 kg trade appliance truck, and a flight of stairs needs a second person. If the cabinet was laid down, follow your manufacturer's wait before you plug it in. Bosch UK and Safestore do not share one clock.

Empty it, strap the door, and keep it upright

Start the day before. Eat or bag the food, switch off at the socket, and leave the doors open so the interior can dry. Meltwater on the floor is a slip at the moment you tilt. Isolate a fixed water line before you pull the cabinet out. Tape both doors with strips that release without taking the paint. A door that swings on a tilt catches the frame and then the architrave.

Bosch UK's moving advice is to use a sack truck, strap the appliance, keep it upright, and avoid lifting it alone. Pull the cabinet straight out until the foot is clear of the plinth. If it clears the doors, leave it upright. Laying it down starts the plug-in wait. Safestore asks movers not to tip a fridge freezer more than 45 degrees. Put the flatter face against the rails and thread the strap before you tilt. A cabinet that fills your view is a two-person move, even on a level floor.

Toe plate and strap before you tilt

A sack truck is a lever. The toe plate goes under the load, you tilt until the weight sits over the axle, and the wheels roll. How hard that start should feel sits on how to use a sack truck. The plate has to be deep enough for the fridge foot, and the strap has to pull the cabinet down onto that plate.

The Stanley SXWT-HT525 lists a toe plate of 200 mm by 400 mm. Yaheetech describes 35.5 cm by 25.5 cm, so one axis is shallower. Move-It and Einhell do not print a toe-plate size. Check the iron against the foot in the room. A plate that only catches the front lip kicks out at the first threshold.

The PARRS white-goods truck, not an ASIN in this set, has a narrow foot-iron, buffers, a 300 kg rating, and an empty weight around 15 kg. A light folder can do a flat domestic move. It is a different machine. Use webbing with a buckle. A bungee stretches. Yaheetech includes a strap. The Einhell BT-HT 90 extract does not, so add one. If the maker forbids tipping, use a furniture lifter and keep the appliance level.

What amazon.co.uk reviews actually moved

The Einhell BT-HT 90 is the high-volume folder: about £23.66, 4.5 from 13,334 amazon.co.uk reviews, a stated 90 kg, and about 5 kg empty. UK reviews mention a dryer and a fridge freezer. Reviewers say the extendable handle does not lock. Rubber wheels suit a kitchen floor, not a gravel path. The MoverX 85 kg folder is the best value pick: £27.99, 4.6 from 662 reviews, about 3.1 kg empty, handle stated from 75 cm to 100 cm. Reviewers use it for white goods inside 85 kg, including a fridge freezer. One review flags conflicting capacity wording, so trust the figure for the mode you are in. It prints no stair guides.

The Yaheetech trolley lists 100 kg, about 5.4 kg empty, 4.8 from only seven reviews at £34.99. One buyer moved a fridge freezer. Another warns that nuts worked loose. It includes a strap and the 35.5 cm by 25.5 cm plate. Seven reviews cannot carry a durability claim. The Stanley SXWT-HT525 states 200 kg, about 7 kg empty, £110.48, 4.1 from 307 reviews, pneumatic wheels, and a toe plate of 200 mm by 400 mm. One UK reviewer reported a handle bending on a fridge they believed was under the stated maximum. That is one review, not a failure rate. Named stair guides are not a separate stair kilogram.

When 70 kg on two wheels is the wrong figure

The top pick is the Move-It folding hand truck, ASIN B0DFYMHSD9, at £69.99 with 4.7 from 140 amazon.co.uk reviews. It states 70 kg on two wheels and 120 kg on four, weighs 7.15 kg empty, folds, and uses castor wheels with a telescopic handle. Reviewers mention soil bags, paving slabs, ovens, and dishwashers, often after a cheaper folder failed. A bullet mentions a steel frame while the material field says aluminium. The strap line is blank. Add one.

Quote 70 kg when you tip it like a sack truck. The 120 kg line is the flat platform, and a tall fridge there still needs a strap and a second person. Read the net weight on the rating plate. This page will not invent a typical fridge weight. The Stanley HT525's 200 kg figure is the high two-wheel rating here. A PARRS-style truck at about 300 kg sits outside these ASINs.

At work, the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 still require a risk assessment. There is no single UK legal kilogram that turns a printed rating into permission for a solo stair carry. The number on the truck is the manufacturer's rating for that mode.

Stairs are a different job

A kerb is where solo moves fail. Roll the axle close to the lip, keep the strap tight, and lift the toe plate with your legs. Bounce the wheels off the kerb and the handle becomes a lever it was not built to be. If you cannot see the route, wait for help.

A full flight sits outside the flat-ground rating. Safestore prefers a sack truck to a flat dolly on stairs and still caps the tip at 45 degrees. None of these folders print a separate stair kilogram. A flat rating of 70 kg to 90 kg does not grow one. The capacity decision is on sack truck for stairs. Take two people. Bosch UK says do not lift alone. If the manufacturer forbids tipping, leave the sack truck downstairs.

How long to wait before you plug it in

Keep the cabinet upright and the hour argument does not start. If it was laid on its side, Bosch UK says at least three hours before you switch it on. Safestore says at least four hours, and some manufacturers say 24 hours. Half a day is a fourth rule that neither page wrote. Stand the cabinet level before you count. The wait is for oil in the cooling circuit to settle, so your brand's booklet outranks a storage-company average. Treat three hours as Bosch's floor for a side lay, not as every maker's clock. We did not time a recovery.

Plug into a UK 13 A socket once the wait is over, and put food back only after the cabinet is cold. If it was on its side and you have no manual you trust, wait the 24 hours some makers specify. A doorway lean and a cabinet laid flat in a boot are different events. Retire the truck if the toe plate is bent or the handle will not lock. A tighter bungee does not restore the rating.

Common questions

Can I move a fridge on my own?
Bosch UK tells you not to lift a fridge freezer alone, and to use a sack truck with a strap while the cabinet stays upright. On a flat hall, one person can roll it when the weight sits inside the two-wheel rating and you can see over the load. Stop when the cabinet blocks your view, the start feels sharp, or the route includes a flight. A second person steadies the top. This page does not promise a one-person stair move.
Do I need a special white-goods truck?
You need a toe plate that sits under the cabinet and a stated load that matches the mode you will use. A trade appliance truck such as the PARRS model, outside this amazon.co.uk set, uses a narrow foot-iron, buffers, a 300 kg rating, and an empty weight around 15 kg. A household folder can move a fridge freezer when the plate and the rating agree with your cabinet. If the plate is too short for the foot, size up or use a furniture lifter.
Which way should the fridge face on the sack truck?
Tape the door shut, then put the flatter face against the frame so the strap pulls the cabinet down onto the toe plate. A proud handle catches architraves. If the manual shows a required moving face, follow that diagram. Bosch UK asks you to keep the appliance upright and strapped. Check the strap after the first metre, because a smooth door skin lets a loose belt creep.
What strap is enough for a fridge on a hand truck?
Use a webbing strap with a buckle you can tension by hand, run so it pulls the cabinet down into the toe plate. A bungee stretches and lets a tall, smooth cabinet shift. The Yaheetech listing in this set includes a strap. The Einhell BT-HT 90 extract does not, so add one before moving day. These sources give no single breaking-strength number. A tired strap with a bent hook is a reason to stop.
Can I lay a fridge on its side to get it through a door?
Laying a fridge on its side starts a plug-in wait. Bosch UK says keep the cabinet upright, and if it was on its side wait at least three hours. Safestore asks you not to tip more than 45 degrees and quotes a longer wait, with some makers saying 24 hours. Take the appliance door off if the leaflet allows it, before you lay the cabinet down to win a few centimetres at a doorway.
How long do I wait before switching a fridge back on?
If the fridge stayed upright, Bosch UK does not add a side-lay wait. If it was on its side, Bosch UK says at least three hours. Safestore says at least four hours, and some manufacturers say 24. Use the booklet for your brand rather than an average of those clocks. Leave the cabinet standing and level for the wait, then plug it into a UK 13 A socket. We did not time a recovery in a lab.
Is 70 kg on two wheels enough for a fridge freezer?
Seventy kilograms is the two-wheel figure on the Move-It listing, at £69.99. The same listing states 120 kg on four wheels. Use 70 kg when the frame is tipped like a sack truck. Read the fridge's net weight on the rating plate or in the manual. If the cabinet is heavier, the four-wheel number does not cover a tipped move. The Stanley SXWT-HT525 states 200 kg on two wheels. Match the plate and the mode to that weight.
Can I take a fridge upstairs on a sack truck?
A flight of stairs is a different job from a flat hall. Safestore prefers a sack truck to a flat dolly on stairs and still expects the tip kept under 45 degrees. Household folders in this set do not print a separate stair kilogram figure. Stair-guide wording on the Stanley HT525 is not that figure. Bosch UK says do not lift alone. Plan two people and a strap. If the maker forbids tipping, use a furniture lifter.
