Folding sack truck for a van: weight and fold size

How-to22 October 20267 min read

A folding sack truck for a van is chosen by empty weight and folded thickness. A 3.1 kg, 6 cm folder is a different daily lift from a 17 kg frame you carry.

You are at the side door with the boxes already in, and the sack truck still has to go in after them. A folding sack truck for a van is the one you can lift empty and lay flat in the gap that is left, not the one with the largest kilogram figure on the frame. In the aluminium sack truck comparison on amazon.co.uk, a MoverX folder weighs 3.1 kg and prints a 6 cm dimension, while a Stanley multi-truck weighs 17 kg before any parcel is on it.

Peter F. checked those listings and public UK guidance from the Health and Safety Executive and BIL Group in October 2026. Nothing here is a lab test of your van. Prices are shelf figures from this extract and they move. If a listing has no folded size, the entry is n/a. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

In short

Choose the truck by the empty weight you will lift at every stop and by a folded thickness the listing actually prints. In this extract, 3.1 kg at 39 x 6 x 75 cm is a different van tool from 17 kg with no fold-for-storage line. A 200 kg Stanley that does not state a fold will not become a boot slab because a cheaper folder on the same page collapses.

Empty weight is the van specification

The empty weight of a sack truck decides the round, because you lift the frame before you lift the parcels. At the light end of this amazon.co.uk set, the MoverX MX-T85 is 3.1 kg at £27.99, with 4.6 from 662 reviews and a stated load of 85 kg. The WMR folder is 3.37 kg, stated 80 kg. The Einhell BT-HT 90 is about 5 kg, stated 90 kg. The MoverX 150 kg sibling is 5.75 kg.

The Stanley SXWT-HT525 states 200 kg, uses large pneumatic wheels, and weighs 7 kg empty at £110.48, with 4.1 from 307 reviews. The Stanley SXWT-MT515 states 200 kg as a hand truck and 250 kg as a platform, weighs 17 kg empty, and costs £183.91, with 4.0 from 22 reviews. Seventeen kilograms at every side door is a lift before any goods are on the plate.

At work, HSE INDG143 points employers to the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992. Those duties apply when the truck is work equipment. They do not set a householder's personal maximum. If you cannot lift the bare truck from the van floor to the pavement without a twist, it is too heavy for that route. BIL Group sometimes suggests working about twenty percent under a printed rating. That is one maker's rule of thumb, not a statute.

Folded thickness the listings actually print

Folded thickness is the second specification, and the listings are uneven about it. The MoverX 85 kg row prints 39 x 6 x 75 cm. This page treats that as a folded claim, because the listing says the truck folds and 6 cm is the axis that fits a van gap. The 150 kg row prints 50 x 6 x 93 cm. Neither figure is a tape measurement we made, and amazon.co.uk dimension lines are often unlabelled, so check which way the 6 cm runs when the box arrives. A handle still 75 cm long will not slide under a load bed.

Do not read every box as the same claim. The Einhell prints 41 x 38 x 107 cm and does fold, but the extract does not label 38 cm as folded thickness, so use the 5 kg empty weight as the boot fact. The WMR prints 39 x 27 x 100 cm, and 27 cm may be an open width. UK reviewers say the CAMBA Moova, 5.99 kg, needs roughly 30 cm of storage, against about 5 cm or 6 cm for a flat folder. That 30 cm figure is a review complaint, not a folded-size field. Rubber on the MoverX rows is not labelled solid or pneumatic.

A folding toe plate is for the truck that travels

A folding toe plate is the hinge that lets the truck lie flat. BIL Group's buyers' guide draws the split: a folding plate when the truck is stowed in a van, and a fixed plate when it stays out on the floor. A fixed plate has one less joint to rattle, and it steals length in a short van. If the barrow never leaves the yard, keep the fixed plate. If it rides between drops, the hinge is the feature you came for.

The light folders in this extract fold and do not convert to a platform. The kilogram figure is a manufacturer rating, not an HSE permission. The Stanley HT525 prints a toe plate of 200 mm by 400 mm and does not state a fold. The MT515 converts between hand-truck and platform modes, a different hinge from a storage fold, so 250 kg does not apply while it is tipped as a sack truck. UK reviews mention hinge bolts working loose. If the pin is oval, stop. The how to use guide covers the tilt and strap.

Handles that twist once the truck is in the van

Telescopic handles let a short folder reach between waist and shoulder, the band HSE guidance gives employers for handle height. The Einhell's recurring UK complaint is that the handle does not lock in the three positions the marketing suggests. The MoverX 85 kg listing states 75 cm to 100 cm, and the 150 kg listing states 89 cm to 115 cm. A CAMBA reviewer at 5 ft 4 in says the handle does not come up high enough.

Twist in the van usually means the handle was still out when the door closed, a box fell on the grip, or the lock was never engaged. The HT525 extract includes a UK report of a handle bending on a fridge the reviewer believed was under the stated maximum. Collapse the handle to the stop, then stow it. If the tubes spin with the lock on, section 11 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 is the frame for rejecting goods that do not match the description. Photograph the lock on the day it arrives.

When a heavier truck still wins

A lightweight aluminium hand truck is the multi-drop default only while the goods stay inside a modest stated load and you lift the frame at every stop. Manutan's buyers' guide points aluminium at drivers and exhibition work for that reason. When daily capacity matters more, leave the 3 kg folder. The HT525's 200 kg line, 7 kg empty weight, and pneumatic wheels are the serious two-wheel end of this set. Stair guides are named, and no separate stair kilogram is printed, so they are not a stair rating.

Steel still has a place when the barrow never sees a van. The rust and repair points belong on the aluminium versus steel page. Solid rubber, as on the WMR, avoids punctures and rides harshly on gravel. Pneumatic tyres, as on both Stanleys, cope with a rough path and go flat. The MoverX word rubber does not say which you have bought. The buying guide sets wheel choice next to handle height and plate size.

How to stow it so it stays put

Stow the truck as cargo. Fold the toe plate, collapse the handle to the stop, and lay the frame against a bulkhead with the wheels turned inward. Pass a strap through the frame to a lashing point the van already has, so the truck cannot walk forward under braking. The cord on the toe plate is a different job. UK reviews include loads that slide when that cord is all there is. If there is no rated point where the truck must live, move the truck. Wedging it between parcels is not a restraint.

Lift the empty frame close to your body, from the van floor to the pavement. On a folder in the 3 kg to 6 kg band, one person can do that lift. On the MT515, leave the truck at the stop if 17 kg is awkward. Walk the first metre empty so you notice a soft tyre, a loose pin, or a handle that will not lock. Do not leave the truck unrestrained on a passenger seat, and do not let the side door bend the handle shut.

Common questions

What folded size fits a car boot?
Measure the gap where the truck will sit, then compare it with a dimension the listing labels as folded. The MoverX 85 kg folder prints 39 x 6 x 75 cm at 3.1 kg, which can lie beside a suitcase if the lip clears the wheels. The Einhell BT-HT 90 prints 41 x 38 x 107 cm and does not label that box as folded, so it is not a boot footprint. If the folded truck is taller than the opening, the kilogram rating never gets used.
Is a 6 cm folded thickness realistic?
Only as the figure on that listing. The MoverX 85 kg and 150 kg rows both show 6 cm on one axis, at 39 x 6 x 75 cm and 50 x 6 x 93 cm. Those fields are often unlabelled, so check the 6 cm with a tape on delivery. We did not measure the fold. CAMBA reviewers talk about needing about 30 cm of storage against 5 or 6 cm for a flat folder, from UK reviews rather than a folded-size field.
How heavy is too heavy to lift into the van every day?
There is no single UK legal kilogram for lifting an empty sack truck at home. At work, HSE guidance points employers to the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992, and the empty frame is still a lift. In this extract a MoverX folder is 3.1 kg, an Einhell about 5 kg, a Stanley HT525 7 kg, and a Stanley MT515 17 kg. Three kilograms is a short lift. Seventeen at every stop is a different job.
Do I need a folding toe plate?
You need a folding toe plate when the truck has to lie flat in a van or a boot. BIL Group's buyers' guide draws that split: a folding plate for van stowage, and a fixed plate when the truck stays out on the floor. A fixed plate has fewer hinges, which helps in a warehouse aisle and hurts when you slide the frame under a bulkhead. If the listing does not say the plate folds, do not assume a hinge is in the photo.
Can the Stanley 200 kg model fold?
The Stanley SXWT-HT525 extract does not say that it folds. Folding is n/a, and the dimension line is 117 x 47 x 49 cm at 7 kg empty, with a stated 200 kg load and a toe plate of 200 mm by 400 mm. That is a standing truck, not a 6 cm slab. The SXWT-MT515 converts between hand truck and platform at 17 kg, and fold-for-storage is not separately stated. If van thickness is the requirement, buy a listing that prints a fold.
Why did the telescopic handle twist in the van?
Telescopic handles on light folders twist in UK reviews when the tubes are extended, loaded sideways, or left unlocked. The Einhell extract says the handle does not lock in the three positions the marketing suggests. MoverX states 75 cm to 100 cm on the 85 kg model and 89 cm to 115 cm on the 150 kg model. A handle still extended when you shut the side door gets bent by the door or a shifting box. Collapse it fully, and check the lock, before the frame goes in.
Is aluminium the default for multi-drop work?
Aluminium is the default only when you lift the empty truck all day and the goods stay inside a modest stated load. Manutan's buyers' guide points aluminium at drivers and exhibition work for that reason. Light folders here run about 3.1 kg to 5.75 kg empty, with stated loads from 80 kg to 150 kg. A heavier frame that does not fold still wins when the truck stays at the stop.
Where should I secure the truck so it does not become a projectile?
Lay it folded against a bulkhead or side panel, wheels inward, and strap the frame to a lashing point the van already has. A loose truck slides under braking. The bungee that holds a box to the toe plate is not that strap. UK reviews mention hinge bolts working loose, so check the pins before you tension anything. If there is no rated point where the truck must sit, move the truck. Do not wedge it against the boxes and hope friction holds.
