How to use a Yard Force lawn mower

Updated: October 2026

The first spring cut is where a Yard Force mower is most likely to stop: long grass, damp underneath, and a low deck. The usual fix is a higher setting, dry conditions and smaller reductions over later cuts, not more force. This is how to use a Yard Force lawn mower without inventing a start sequence that may not match your manual. Height ranges are on the [Yard Force lawn mower comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/yard-force-lawn-mower). Follow the manual for assembly and controls. Listings were read on 15 October 2026. Set the cutting height before starting the motor

For the first cut of the year, the RHS advises the highest setting and the one-third rule: remove no more than roughly one third of the blade at a time. A lawn at 90 mm should not go straight to 20 mm. Start high, let it recover, then lower the deck on a later dry cut. The EM U32, LM C33 and LM G32 state five settings from 20 to 60 mm. The LM G37A and LM C37B state seven positions from 25 to 75 mm. A 75 mm first pass is more room, not a licence to force dense wet growth. One RHS page gives about 25 mm in summer and 40 mm in spring and autumn. Another gives a 13–25 mm summer band. A rotary that stops at 20 or 25 mm cannot make a 6–13 mm fine-lawn cut. The LM C38A cylinder states 14–43 mm in the bullets and suits little-and-often mowing on fairly level grass. Do not use that lower minimum to rescue an overgrown lawn. The buying guide separates rotary and cylinder if you are still choosing.

Mow dry grass and empty the box before it chokes

Dry grass stands up and moves through the deck. Wet clippings clump, add load and block the chute, and damp ground increases slip. Electrical Safety First advises against using an electric lawn mower in wet conditions. Wait until the surface and the growth are dry. If the motor note drops, or clippings stop reaching the bag, slow down and take a narrower strip, overlapping more of the grass you have already cut. On very long grass the RHS suggests strimming first, raking the cuttings away, then mowing. Empty the box before it becomes a plug. The 30-litre boxes on the compact models fill sooner than the 40-litre bags, and wet growth can overwhelm either. Stop, isolate the power as the manual directs, and clear the chute. A level indicator is only a prompt. A light rear roller follows the cut and may leave a faint stripe. The small-garden guide compares the lighter decks if carrying is the real limit.

If it stops, raise the deck before assuming it is broken

A cordless mower that stops in long grass and runs again after cooling may be on overload or thermal protection. Release the control, remove the battery, wait until everything has stopped, and clear packed grass with a tool, never with your hand near an energised blade. Restart higher and take less. On a 20–60 mm model, move towards 60 mm for the first pass. A second dry day can take the lawn down further. Do not blame the pack while the grass is still severe. Charge it on the correct Yard Force charger, let a hot pack cool, and check the vents. Repeated stops on short, dry grass, with a charged compatible battery and a clear deck, are a warranty question: note the model and battery code and contact the retailer or Yard Force. GR40 is one 40 V pack. The LM C37B needs two CR20 20 V packs together. The 40 V or 20 V guide covers that split if runtime is still poor after the grass and the deck are clear.

Disconnect the power before touching the deck

On a cordless mower, release the control, wait for the blade to stop and remove the battery before you clear, carry or look under the deck. On the LM C37B, treat both batteries as the power source. A stopped blade is not proof the machine cannot restart. On the corded EM U32, switch off, unplug, and keep the plug with you before you approach the underside. Electrical Safety First recommends a UK three-pin fused plug, RCD protection, and an outdoor lead that is fully unwound, with suitable thermal protection. Do not daisy-chain leads, run a connector through wet grass, or pull the mower by the cable. Start near the socket and work away so the lead stays on cut grass. If a wet step or a public path makes that unreliable, a cordless mower is the practical format. The charger still belongs indoors. Stop if a cable is cut, a plug gets hot, the housing is damaged, the blade hits something hard, or vibration starts. Cable damage needs a competent repair, not tape. If the job means opening safety systems or working on mains wiring, use an authorised service route or a qualified professional.

Common questions

What height should I use for the first spring cut?
Use the mower's highest suitable setting and remove no more than roughly one third of the grass height. On models offering 20–60 mm, that may mean starting near 60 mm. On 25–75 mm models, start near 75 mm. Lower the deck over later dry cuts rather than taking the whole reduction in one pass.
Why does my Yard Force mower stop in long grass?
Long or wet grass can overload the motor and pack the deck. Disconnect the power, clear the deck safely, raise the cutting height and mow more slowly with a greater overlap. Repeated stopping on short, dry grass with a charged compatible battery and a clear deck is a reason to contact support, not to keep forcing the cut.
Can I mow wet grass?
Wait for dry conditions. Wet grass clumps, increases motor load, collects poorly and makes the ground slippery. Electrical Safety First advises against using an electric lawn mower in wet conditions, which matters especially with a corded model and an outdoor lead. A cordless mower is not a reason to mow while the lawn is still wet.
How do I clear grass from underneath?
Release the control, wait for the blade to stop and isolate the machine by removing the battery or unplugging the cord, as the manual directs. On a dual-pack mower, isolate both packs. Use a suitable tool rather than your hand, and do not defeat a guard or a safety control to reach the blade.
Does the EM U32 need an RCD?
Electrical Safety First recommends RCD protection for outdoor electrical equipment. Use a suitable UK outdoor lead, fully unwind it, and avoid chained extensions. If the supply arrangement is uncertain, ask a competent electrician rather than improvising a connection through wet grass or a domestic indoor lead.
When is cutting out a warranty problem?
Seek support when a correctly assembled mower repeatedly stops on short, dry grass with a clear deck and a fully charged compatible battery, or when there is abnormal noise, vibration, heat or visible damage. Keep the model and battery codes ready. Overload in long wet grass is a different pattern from a fault on a clear, dry lawn.
