How to use a self-propelled lawn mower

Updated: October 2026

You are about to mow with the drive switched on for the first time, and the habit you learned on a push mower will fight you. A self-propelled machine has the blade and the wheels on separate controls. This is how to use a self-propelled lawn mower on a UK lawn: engage the drive, set a high first cut, reverse without the wheels pulling, and stop when the bank or the bail feels wrong. The machines are on the [self-propelled cordless lawn mower comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/self-propelled-cordless-lawn-mower). Products Compared used RHS, Husqvarna's own UK notes, and GOV.UK noise guidance. We did not time a cut. A purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Two controls, not one

The bail, the bar you squeeze to the handle, is the operator presence control for the blade. Let go and the blade should stop. That is the buyer-facing point of the walk-behind electric mower standard, IEC 62841-4-3. If the blade keeps spinning after your hand leaves the bail, stop using the mower and return it. The drive lever is a different control. Husqvarna's UK instructions, which are not a diagram for the Litheli or the woRkologie, say to fit the battery, fit the safety key, lift the drive lever to engage, and ease the mower forward about 10 cm so the wheels take up. Treat the 10 cm as that maker's figure. Your lever may be a dial, a tortoise-and-hare switch, or a bar. Keep both hands on the handle, walk at the mower's pace, and release the drive the moment you need to stop the wheels.

The first pass

Mow when the grass is dry. The RHS says not to mow in frost, and not when the soil is very wet, because you smear the surface and clog the deck. For the first cut of the spring, use the highest setting and take off less than you want to. The one-third rule is the working limit: do not remove more than about one-third of the leaf in one pass. The Litheli lists 25–76 mm in six steps, so the top step is the first-pass choice on that machine. The woRkologie lists 25–75 mm. The Greenworks bullets say 25–80 mm in seven steps, and the attribute table says 80 cm. Do not set a Greenworks deck to the maximum until you know which line the lever actually follows. Eighty centimetres is not a mowing height. On the Litheli, reviewers mention an internal shield that has to come out before the basket collects.

Reverse and obstacles

Release the drive before you pull the mower backwards. If the wheels are still powered, they fight you, and on a slope they can walk the deck somewhere you did not intend. Husqvarna's page says to disengage before pulling back. The same idea belongs on any driven mower, even when the lever looks different. Pull only with the drive off. Do not walk backwards down a bank. Turn on the flat, then take the next stripe. Around a tree, a hose, or a toy, slow the drive first. Stop the blade before you lift the front wheels over a path edging. Drive does not hop a kerb. Clear a blockage with the battery out and the blade still. If the bail does not kill the blade, do not investigate. That mower goes back.

Noise and neighbours

There is no national clock that says you may start at one time and must stop at another. The Environmental Protection Act 1990 can treat noise as a statutory nuisance when it unreasonably and substantially interferes with a home or injures health. A different rule covers the machine at sale. The Noise Emission in the Environment by Equipment for use Outdoors Regulations 2001 cap sound power at 96 dB for a cutting width up to 50 cm, and the mower should carry that mark. Every deck in this set is under 50 cm. None of the three listings prints a decibel figure, so this page does not claim they meet 96 dB.

Common questions

How do I engage the drive?
Fit the battery the way that mower requires, including a second pack if the listing says both must be in. Hold the blade bail if you mean to cut. Then move the drive control, which may be a lever, a dial, or a two-position switch. Husqvarna tells its own users to ease forward about 10 cm as the drive takes up.
How do I reverse?
Release the drive fully, then pull the mower back. Powered wheels will push against you. Turn on level ground rather than walking backwards down a slope. If the drive will not release, stop. Do not fight a stuck lever on a bank. That fault is a return, or a repair, before you mow again.
What height for the first spring cut?
Use the highest step on the lever, then a second pass if the lawn is still too long. The RHS one-third guide means you leave at least about two-thirds of the leaf. Summer cuts can come down toward 25 mm. Do not chase a low setting on the first warm weekend.
Can I mow wet grass?
The RHS advice is to avoid mowing when the soil is very wet. Clippings from damp grass block the chute, and you smear the surface. A light dew is a different thing from a lawn that squelches. Wet slopes are worse, because the tyres and your boots lose grip together. Wait for a drier afternoon rather than dropping the deck to get the job finished in one pass.
What time can I mow in the UK?
There is no single legal start time in the sources used here. Nuisance law looks at unreasonable interference, and Oxford, Cornwall, and Brighton & Hove say ordinary daytime mowing is unlikely to count. Mow in the daytime and do not treat a forum timetable as a statute.
