Self propelled cordless lawn mower buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You have a UK lawn that is starting to feel heavy under a push mower, and you want the wheels to do some of the work before you commit to a brand. A title that says self-propelled is only a title. This self propelled cordless lawn mower buying guide treats the listing as a set of claims: drive, charger, width, height, bag, and price, in that order. The three machines we kept are on the [self-propelled cordless lawn mower comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/self-propelled-cordless-lawn-mower). Products Compared read the amazon.co.uk listings saved on 22 October 2026 and did not mow a test lawn. A purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Confirm the wheels are driven

A cordless mower is self-propelled only when the listing says the wheels are driven. Large wheels that merely roll do not count, and a category heading does not count either. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 requires goods to match the description, so a machine sold as self-propelled has to turn its wheels under power. If that sentence is missing, you are looking at a push mower with a battery. Read the drive line for a speed you can change. A single fixed pace is awkward beside a flower bed, because the deck keeps moving while you try to steer. Rear-wheel drive is the pattern UK guides prefer when the ground rises, because the weight sits over the driven axle. Front-wheel drive turns more easily around obstacles and can lose grip as that weight shifts back on a climb. In this capture the woRkologie E20LM02-AK220 states a rear-wheel drive from 2.2 to 4.7 km/h, which the listing also prints as 1.4 to 2.9 mph. The same listing calls the control a stepless dial, while reviews describe a tortoise and a hare. Those two accounts are not the same control, and this page does not merge them. The Litheli 40V states a stepless drive from 1.4 to 2.9 mph and does not name which axle is driven.

Batteries, bays, and the UK plug

The Litheli, at about £249.99, is sold with two 5.0Ah batteries, and the title names a charger. Several amazon.co.uk reviews say the lead arrived without a UK mains adapter. That conflict stays. The woRkologie, at about £222.99, includes two 20V 5.0Ah batteries and a fast charger. A UK review says both packs must be fitted to run, and that the charger takes one pack at a time, about 2.5 hours each in that review.

Width, height, bag, and roller

Cutting height should be one range, in millimetres. The Royal Horticultural Society suggests about 25 mm in summer and up to about 40 mm in spring and autumn, and no more than about one-third of the leaf in a single pass. The Litheli lists six positions from 25 mm to 76 mm. The woRkologie lists six from 25 mm to 75 mm. The Greenworks bullets say 25–80 mm, and the attribute table on the same page says 80 cm. Do not average those two lines. A bag, a mulch plug, and a rear roller count only when the listing states them. The woRkologie names a 50 L bag and a mulch plug, and a UK review says it has no rear roller, with scalping when a rear wheel drops over the lawn edge. The Greenworks names a 55 L bag, mulch, and side discharge, and does not mention a roller.

What the price bands do and do not mean

On the 22 October 2026 capture, the two 43 cm kits were about £222.99 and about £249.99, and the 46 cm Greenworks was about £495.98 because the title includes a spare blade. That is the shelf you can see. It is not a magazine test, and it is not a promise that tomorrow's amazon.co.uk price will match.

Common questions

How wide a deck do I need?
For a UK lawn of roughly 200–500 m², a designer's guide points to about 38–46 cm. That is a planning range, not a law, and it ignores the gate. The listings in this set are 43 cm or 46 cm. A wider deck shortens a straight run and struggles in a narrow side return.
Do I need two batteries?
You need whatever the mower requires to start, which is not the same as whatever is in the box. Some kits include two packs because the voltage badge is two packs added together. A woRkologie review says both batteries must be fitted. A twin charger, as on the Greenworks bundle, lets you charge both at once.
What if the charger has no UK plug?
UK mains are 230 V and the plug should be BS 1363. The Litheli title includes a charger, and several UK reviews say there was no UK mains adapter, with at least one buyer charging from a phone charger. That is a description problem. Check the plug in the photos and in the recent reviews before you rely on the title.
What cutting height should I expect in millimetres?
Expect a stated range in millimetres, often starting around 25 mm, which matches the summer height the RHS suggests, with spring and autumn cuts left longer, up to about 40 mm. Six or seven steps across that span appear in this set. If one line says 80 mm and another says 80 cm, as on the Greenworks listing, you do not have a settled maximum.
Does a rear wheel mean a rear roller?
No. A rear wheel carries the deck. A rear roller is a separate cylinder that presses a stripe. The woRkologie review says that mower has no roller, and the listing does not claim one. The Litheli and the Greenworks do not state a roller either. If stripes matter to you, the word roller has to appear.
