Self-propelled or push petrol mower: which drive you need

Updated: October 2026

You have already decided on petrol and a button. Electric start does not make that decision. A starter battery cranks the engine. The wheels turn only when the listing says so. The [petrol lawn mower electric start comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/petrol-lawn-mower-electric-start) is where the four listings sit. Who should skip a bundle is on the [best-for-whom page](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/petrol-lawn-mower-electric-start/sub/petrol-lawn-mower-electric-start-best). Peter F., 22 October 2026. Two different features

The button is a convenience at the start of the job. Self-propelled drive is the rest of the afternoon. A push mower leaves that weight with you. A button and driven wheels are separate. In this set the Hyundai bullets claim both. The Draper Amazon file claims only the button, and that claim conflicts with Draper’s own page. No kept ASIN says you can disengage the drive for a corner. The buying guide is where you check that the listing is one petrol mower with a stated button.

When a flat, smaller lawn can stay a push

On flat ground, with a mower you can already roll, a push deck is enough. Garden Tool 360 treats push as enough under roughly 200 square metres on the flat, and puts a crossover near 250–300 square metres. That is their rule of thumb, not a figure from these Amazon files. The weights in this set are not usable. The Draper Amazon cell says 3 kg. Draper’s own page lists 23 kg for 08671. Expert Reviews’ 43 kg belongs to a HYM510SPE, which is not B0D73R86LK. Do not convert a bad cell into light enough to push.

When slope, weight, or a long afternoon changes it

Choose self-propelled drive when the ground rises, when the mower is heavy, or when the second half of the session is the hard half. My Lush Garden treats self-propelled as worth it over about 300 square metres, on a slope, or when the mower is heavy. Garden Ninja puts self-propelled petrol nearer 600–2,000 square metres. ManoMano still talks about push mowers under about 700 square metres. Those numbers cannot all be true as a rule. They are other publishers’ rules of thumb, and they disagree. A short bank can justify drive when a bigger level lawn does not.

What this set actually claims

Three Hyundai rows claim self-propelled drive. B0CYP9QYYT at £421.79 says it on product 1, beside a 52 cc strimmer. B0B6SVW14M at £455.99 says it beside a backpack blower. B0D73R86LK at £752.39 says it on both mowers, and only product 1 claims the button. The Draper file, B0957QTT1N at £207.40, does not answer the question. The operation mode cell says Manual. Draper’s own page calls 08671 self-propelled. You cannot file the Amazon row as a push mower or as a driven one.

Common questions

Does electric start mean the mower drives itself?
No. The button, or the key, cranks the petrol engine with a small starter battery. The wheels stay still unless a separate drive is engaged. You can start an engine electrically and still have to push the deck. In this set the Hyundai bullets claim both features. The Draper bullet claims the button and leaves the drive unanswered. Read the two lines separately before you decide the listing matches your slope.
When is push enough?
Push is enough when the lawn is flat, you can roll the weight, and the session stays short. Garden Tool 360’s rule of thumb is under roughly 200 square metres on the flat. That is their figure, not a standard, and not a measurement of these listings. If you are still comfortable at the end of a dry, level cut, you do not need driven wheels.
When does a slope change the answer?
As soon as you are forcing the mower uphill, or holding it back on the way down, drive is doing a job the button cannot do. A short bank can matter more than extra flat grass. The square-metre tables disagree, so do not wait for one size. Choose drive if you would not push that weight uphill in damp grass.
Which kept listing even states the drive?
The three Hyundai listings claim self-propelled drive: B0CYP9QYYT, B0B6SVW14M, and both mowers inside B0D73R86LK. The Draper listing does not state it. Its operation mode cell says Manual, and the product page leaves the self-propelled question unanswered. Draper’s manufacturer page says 08671 is self-propelled, which conflicts with that silence. Use the Amazon wording for the Amazon row, and do not quietly upgrade it because the brand site differs.
Can I turn self-propel off for corners?
Not from anything printed on these four listings. Some petrol mowers let you disengage the drive, which EasyLawnMowing mentions as a feature of many large-lawn machines. The kept bullets do not say you can. If you need to creep around a tight bed, look for that sentence in the manual before you buy, or expect to hold the mower back. Assuming a freewheel because another brand has one is how a corner becomes a fight with the clutch.
Is a heavier mower the reason to pay for drive?
Yes, when the kilograms are real and the session is long. My Lush Garden pairs weight with slope. In this set the weights are not usable: the Draper cell says 3 kg, Draper’s page says 23 kg, and the Hyundai rows do not give a trustworthy mower weight. Pay for drive because of your slope and your arms, not because a broken cell made the mower look light.
